Cyclist beat to death on raleigh greenway

Yep. If you get knocked off the bike tumbling in the bushes and thinking "what just happened and damn my gun is in that pouch on my bike".

I have rode through some questionable detroit areas (in between nice areas) on bicycles with the wife. caught a few strange stares when folks noticed I had a pistol visible on my right and spare mags on my left...
let 'em look.
"don't want none, don't start none"

I don't want to carry off body. If a car or thug separates me from my bike I'll be SOL.
I wear mountain bike shorts. I know I sacrifice poseur points, but it allows me to carry so I'll do it.

I ride a road bike. No dirt or gravel for me. I think I'm going to try the Alien Gear chest rig.

I ride a road bike too. But you gotta do what you gotta do.

I can buy the chest holster for what a pair of MTN bike shorts cost. I already have tons of road bike bibs. Plus I would still have to dig in a pocket for my gun. I think I'll go with the easier access of the chest holster outside of my bike jersey.

Chauncey Weinkoop Depew Jr? Yeah he white. That’s about all it takes right now. You get whatchu deserve if you’re white.

Riding a bike is a white man privilege I guess.

I always carry when riding either my road or mountain bike. a pocket 380 fits perfectly in a back pocket of a bike jersey.

I’ve seen nothing on local news about this since initial report. Anybody seen updates?

It seems WRAL decided not to show the outraged protesters burning and looting through the streets of Raleigh in response to this.

I did a perfunctory search: everything seems to be "4 days ago" unfortunately.

I used to ride a road bike, something over 20 years ago. The first time I rode over about 10 miles I realized my legs were like jelly and I was basically defenseless. I started carrying my NCDL (for ID), a little bit of cash, and a small pistol in a fanny pack.
I carry a pistol in a fanny pack too, but have recently began to consider carrying it in a shoulder holster for quicker access. It's too late to fish one out of a fanny pack after some thug strikes out at you as you pass by them on a trail.

I just ordered the Alien Gear Cloak Chest holster for my Shield 9mm. It said 3-5 weeks for delivery. I'll post up a review when I get it.

Wait.. wait. I have 4 sewing machines (for my leatherwork). I believe I can rig up something lightweight and relatively non-obtrusive that will work for bikers. Something simple and secure that doesn't scream "gun holster" to the leftist soccer moms on the trails.
Lemme brainstorm and sketch up some ideas & see what I can come up with.

I use a simple Molly Mac Gear Chest Pack, or Front Pack, which is a small MOLLE panel, with a holster behind it, and whatever you want on the front. That makes it multi-use, and the gun concealed.

I'm not sure I really want my gun concealed. I want the car driver's to look over at me at the stoplight and say, "Oh crap, he's got a gun!"

No real update that I've heard. The cycling community did hold a nice tribute ride for the deceased on Saturday though. It seemed he really was a nice guy and well-liked in the community.

Be careful if you are out riding. It is sad to think someone will kill you to steal your bike, but we know it happens all too often. I have a running holster, but really need to get one for when I ride my bike alone.

You going to wear that under the jersey or just like that?
Just like that. I ride 5 days a week. I go from the Olde Providence area on Colony Rd past Southpark to Queen's Rd and ride the "Booty Loop" around Myers Park. 30 miles by the time I get home.

Update after you ride with that. Comfort, chaffing, moisture/rust on gun and responses of others.

I've been riding with a G42 in my rear jersey pocket. It gets a good bit of sweat on it. I wipe it down after each ride. It's just too hard to get the G42 out of the pocket and then I have to use two hands to get it out of the holster. I imagine a few soccer mom's and other cyclists are going to be offended but I don't care

That is my old stomping grounds. I would so wear that to alarm the natives.

When I lived in San Diego, I lived 7 miles away from the hospital I worked at, and I would ride a road bike to and from work almost every day. Of course, there were bike lanes, and all the Californian drivers gave cyclists lots of room.

Now, I live in the country in NC and EVERY SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, the country roads around my house are infested by bicyclists.

Please do not come out here... I do not want to be charged with vehicular manslaughter because I came around a corner and topped a hill going 55mph only to slam on brakes because 10 old men on bicycles are taking up the whole road and going 8mph...

I am all for freedom and bike riding... But, if there is no bike lane, and you are going 8mph on a 55mph road and you get run over, THAT'S YOUR FAULT. Or, at least it should be...

Rant over...

I go faster than 8mph. But ok.

Haha

I know my rant has nothing to do with the original post, or concealed/ open carry...

I just saw so many people talking about riding bikes and it immediately reminded me of the cyclists out here on the weekends.

Carry on...

The house I grew up in backed up to Cedarwood golf course.
I grew up between Myers Park High School and Southpark, although Southpark was just unused farmland still part of the Harris estate and the woods I played in till I was in 8th grade.

I will. And I will still ride my bike wherever I feel like. I deal with driver's who hate cyclists on a daily basis. Nothing new.
