Cyclist beat to death on raleigh greenway

Yes, it is. You can get arrested for anything the PO at the scene wants. If that wasn't true then explain Red Flag Laws.
I sure as heck wouldn’t let that stop me from carrying in a reasonable manner. I was good friends with, and rode motorcycles with Charlotte cops many years ago. They weren’t stupid then, I hope they aren’t now.

I've been riding with a G42 in my rear jersey pocket. It gets a good bit of sweat on it. I wipe it down after each ride. It's just too hard to get the G42 out of the pocket and then I have to use two hands to get it out of the holster. I imagine a few soccer mom's and other cyclists are going to be offended but I don't care
Looks good on you.

I'm going to wolf whistle him as I ride by.
That's nothing. I've had bottles and cans thrown at me and people intentionally trying to push me into the curb, even while riding in the bike lane!

Well, I'm a sexual predator and a smart ass, not a murderer.

I used to have to ride a bike because of... poor. Anyhow, I've been clipped with a sideview mirror; it sucked.

I don't mind cyclists in Charlotte, where everything with wheels under it is just another a**hole jockeying for road dominance; cyclists just scare the hell out of me when I roll up over a hill or around a curve on some country road and realize I was a split second of distraction away from killing a dozen old men.

When I lived in San Diego, I lived 7 miles away from the hospital I worked at, and I would ride a road bike to and from work almost every day. Of course, there were bike lanes, and all the Californian drivers gave cyclists lots of room.

Now, I live in the country in NC and EVERY SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, the country roads around my house are infested by bicyclists.

Please do not come out here... I do not want to be charged with vehicular manslaughter because I came around a corner and topped a hill going 55mph only to slam on brakes because 10 old men on bicycles are taking up the whole road and going 8mph...

I am all for freedom and bike riding... But, if there is no bike lane, and you are going 8mph on a 55mph road and you get run over, THAT'S YOUR FAULT. Or, at least it should be...

Rant over...

So I see you've driven on Old US 1, Christian Chapel Hill Church Rd, and anywhere else between Pittsboro and Moncure...lol

That used to be me. I’d take 64 home from Pittsboro. Had too many near death experiences from construction workers and drivers with phones so I walk and hike now. People suck.

And I typically rode early on weekend mornings to avoid traffic. Or lunch on a weekday. Never during commute or prime time. It’s crazy out there.

I really don't have a problem with those who bike, I really truly don't. I have friends who ride professionally and competitively. My issue is coming around a blind curve and finding 20 bikes 3-4 wide with a tandem log truck in the opposing lane.

Yep, those people are bad for cyclists and drivers.

Back to the OPs original post, if you actually knew what happens along the Greenways you wouldn't step foot on them, especially through those sections.

I walk the Tobacco Trail in the rough hoods of Cary and Apex and I still have a gun and knife handy on Sunday mornings at 7 am. Ok, I am probably over cautious since there are mainly young hot chicks and small Asian men out there, but you never know.

Careful.....they could be one in the same based off what some forum members have posted.

Slow down, and allow yourself to be Assimilated, bubba!

What if it's a Farm Tractor that you hit, instead of a bicycle?

Or, what if it's a car broke down, not quite off the road.

Or, a deer...

If I hit a deer, I don't go to jail... I've hit deer before...

If I hit a car or a tractor, the person gets whiplash and then recovers.

If I hit 10 old guys on bicycles, they die and I'm in a world of legal trouble just for driving the speed limit on a country road.

My point is that they SHOULD be allowed to ride on curvy country roads, but they also need to take some responsibility if they get run over. Riding your bike in a bike lane is one thing... Riding your bike on curvy country roads is another, and it's inherently much more dangerous.

Bike lanes suck. You can’t build bike lanes on 100’s of miles of rural roads. And those are the best places to ride since there is less traffic than in the burbs or cities. If the cyclist are riding 4 wide take them out. If they are single file slow down and share the road. It was built for transportation and moving people. That’s what they are doing.

"Take them out" Really? If granny is blocking traffic out in the country at 20mph are you going to take her out too? How about Mr Farmer on his tractor or combine, take him out? Do you guys shoot the bird and cuss at the grannies and farmers who are driving along at 20mph, throw things at them? C'mon man!

This is America. People have the freedom to ride their bikes on any roads they like...

But, cyclists need to realize that these curvy country roads were built for multi-ton death machines to roll around at 55mph.

A 200lb man riding a 12lb bicycle at 10 to 20mph will have no protection from an impact with the 2000+ lb vehicle. That's just physics.

There is inherently more risk to the cyclist when riding on these country roads. The cyclist needs to be aware of that added risk and take some responsibility for the accident that may occur.

Telling a cyclist that they are equal to a log truck looks great on paper. Hurray for equality!

But don't forget that the cyclist and the automobile cannot safely occupy the same space at the same time, and when they come into contact, the driver will be fine but the cyclist will be dead or maimed. That's just physics...

I've been riding back roads for 20 years. You aren't telling me anything I don't already know. What you don't realize, because you don't ride, is that there are driver's out there who intentionally try to intimidate, scare and even hit cyclists. You think cyclists are crazy, you ain't seen half the crazy that is driving around in motor vehicles. See you guys later, I'm off to go interact with the nuts in cars on my bike.

I'm sorry you have to deal with the crazy folks. I wish you, and other cyclists, all the best. Stay safe. And, I'm glad y'all are carrying when you ride.

it’s the internet. Guess I should have used a colored font for SARCASM.

Update after you ride with that. Comfort, chaffing, moisture/rust on gun and responses of others.
I rode 30 miles with it today. It was very comfortable. I didn't notice any sweat on the gun. I did have to take it to the alterations lady when I got it because it was too big. The website said that a small fit up to size 43, I wear a 44 jacket so I ordered the large. It was way too big. The alterations lady fixed me right up while I waited so that was no big deal. She did ask me what in the heck that contraption was for!
If anybody did notice it, no one said anything. I don't think most people even had a clue. Of course I had on a black ASU jersey so it kinda blended in. I would definitely recommend it, it's much better than the G42 in my pocket.

Got a link to that? Looks interesting. I'd take it on the ATT for sure (haven't been in a while).

I was riding my car out in N Chatham co when a whole batch of cyclists took up the right lane around a bend. Usually they will show courtesy and shift into single file (really should do that all the time, but .... whatever). This time they just sat in their little cluster and poked around the curve. I blew the horn at one of them out in center lane and when I finally was able to pass, he spit on my car.

I am -or at least have been- a 22 miles a day rider. I believe in sharing the road with a cyclist. I guess the world is just filled with more hateful people than it used to be, best I can figure.

What difference does it make if they take up the whole lane? You should be going all the way in the other lane to pass them anyway even if they are single file. Do you pass a motorcycle while staying halfway in his lane? Sometimes on really narrow roads cyclists take up the whole lane exactly for that reason, to keep cars from passing too closely and shoving them in the ditch. Believe me, it happens. Cars think they can squeeze by a line of cyclists even with a dump truck coming the other way. They are so important that they can't wait an extra minute or two to get by.

Maybe we can just take a few states and make them cycling only states? No cars. Let’s go with VT, WV, SC, CO, WI, CA, OR and WA. That should give everybody room to pursue their happiness. And most of those states don’t like cars anyway. I threw in SC so we would have a nice southern state to ride close by in case I want to go ride. :p

Anyone who drives a car? We get great clots of them blocking the roads here when the weather is nice.
Clots... That makes for a great analogy when you think about our roadways as a circulatory system... I hadn't thought of that before...

Bike lane could be the stints... I think we need more stints...

A black guy came through the crosswalk while I was stopped at the light at Colony and Sharon Rd today. He did a double take when he saw the gun strapped to my chest and said, "Man you are ready for them!"

But takes more time to get to your weapon. I've gotten over being discreet.
It's pretty fast. You leave a small gap in the zippers with them at the corner. The left hand pulls the bag open in one motion while the right draws. It's a lot like drawing from concealment with an IWB holster.

I need one hand on the handle bars on my bike. I'll stick with my open chest holster.

Not suggesting you change your method. Just posting options if others are interested.
