Fishing Pics ... post your most recent.

I’m mating on one of the boats we run charters on next week for the big rock tournament in Morehead city. Fingers crossed I’ll have some cool pics of some billfish to show y’all next week. 🤞
Man that’s exciting stuff! Big money to be won! What’s the boat name? I ask, as I love the Big Rock Tournament and I keep up with the hook ups / releases / boatings each day.

Fin reaper. It’s a 45’ sea hunter. We are at a disadvantage being in a center console but we can run and gun at 40 knots and cover more ground than most of the sport fishers.

Finally a day when the wind wasn't blowing as hard as Kamala.

I headed down to MHC to find some drum. My first catch only ten minutes out and in the turning basin was a pair of 140lb Coasties and their response boat and crew. They boarded and inspected. "Sember Paratus". Very nice you could tell they were chill but had to put up the BA front. On and off in 10mins. No drum but couldnt keep flounder off the line. I netted my personal best at a fat 24.5" (in pic below) but I had a much bigger one spit the plastic at the boat, it looked like a halbut. Any day on the water is better than work.

@Bigdave0924 - Lay day for Fin Reaper today? What happened to Dancin Outlaws Marlin, DQ? No mention on the tourney pages, but questing DQ, as they said C-Student had the first qualifying marlin…

Yeah we didn’t fish today I wish we would have but it was not my call. Dancin outlaws fish was 396# and 105” which is 4# shy and 5” shy of the minimum. We’re rigged up as far as tackle goes getting the go pros set up now for fishing tomorrow.

Dang… sucks for Dancin Outlaw. 400lb penalty Is hard to make up.

As for you and your crew… wishing you the best of luck on some tight lines and some HEAVY fish!! I know you’ll be busy, keep us posted when you can!

Wolverine's fish was too small as well. Died during the fight and they kept fishing. My cousin is on the Savannah Leigh with Capt Troy. Said it was dang $hitty out. Capt Troy put the women on the meat on Sat for a 2nd place Wahoo in the KWLA tournament. I was down yesterday trying to fish the marsh but it was like July 4th with all the traffic. I think there should be an open season on jetskis with a bounty.

That flounder I lost last week I caught again and it spit it right at the boat again. Its now personal. #releasetothegrease

Sucks for Wolverine too. Considering the money on the line, I would have sent that marlin to feed the crabs, if I thought it was on the edge of DQ.

@Bigdave0924 …. Do you have or are you allowed to have a marker / hash mark on the hull of the boat to help identify the length of the fish… or is that a no-no?

The KWLA was on fire this year with some good catches. That 1st place dolphin was a nice one for sure! Good to see more ladies joining the sport / tourney… for fun and for the cause.

I plan on going fishing at the end of this week. Avoiding AB / MHC for sure. Have not decided if I’m hitting the Pamlico or Wilmington area??? Decisions decisions…

3rd time is a charm on that flounder! Good news is, this year, you are allowed to keep 1/2 of a flounder on the second Tuesday of every 5th week of each month.

I think the rules require them to bring every marlin to the docks. Under/over either way. I think an under size is minus 2x the points (at around 800pts) of a release (400pts) while not bringing a dead one can result in elimination from the tourny. Some die during the fight from exhaustion or tail wrapped which is just bad luck and you're required to bring them in to take the points hit if it is under 110"/400lbs. The tournament does not make much of a mention of it if they know it is undersized and they haul it off the weight station pretty quick if small to avoid bad publicity.

Yea the 2 week flounder season sucks, though with the pressure off they are around. I've heard from a few friends having flounder hit topwater plugs.

Good luck @Bigdave0924 ! Everyone should be going out tomorrow it will be the best day all week.

We raised one about 1 o’clock in 7700’ of water. she come up on the right teaser and ate the spanish off the back of it then she went across to the right side and did the same thing on the other teaser then ate a lure on the right side and pealed some drag and then spit the hook. It was over real quick. Disappointing how it ended up but at the same time it was a confidence booster for us at least we know they like what we have to offer.

You don’t have to bring every marlin in it’s the captains choice. If you release a blue with proof it’s good for 400 release points If you do kill one it has to be at least 110” or 400 pounds for the weight to count. If it’s smaller than that the team is docked 400 pounds off the next marlin They weigh.

Ahh I see the confusion. My comment should have had "dead" added in which is the context I wrote it in wrt the other comment. "bring every dead marlin..." I believe the rules state every dead marlin is required to be brought back period whether the boat killed it, or it died during the fight. We have seen some guys keep fishing after a smaller one died early in the day and it wouldn't either meet minimums or wouldn't be large enough to place if it was later on in the week and there are fish on the board already.

From listening to the radio, there's been a fair number releases so the fish are around this year still, but we may not see a grander. Grass seemed bad today.

Do you know what failed on the April-Mae from the lightning? I remember a few years back a couple boats got hit one day and on one boat all the algae in the tanks were fried instantly and gummed up the filters. My boss ran lobster boats out of the Keys in the 70s and he got hit one day and I think he gave it up and went firefighting on land.

You can ”release” one dead but if it’s a borderline fish most of the guys will go ahead and bring it on board.

The April-Mae got struck by lightening and it took out everything on the boat. They got one engine running and tried to chug in on one but the transmission went out on the one running motor. We didn’t see them but they were just making it to the inlet this morning as the fleet was headed out about 6am. They had a very long night and I’m sure they were glad to get back on dry land.

Fished the Pamlico today. The underwater sea grass / seaweed (reminded me of hydrilla) has taken over some of the area and some of the better spots I normally fish. The stuff has filled several smaller cuts / bay areas and the shoreline out about 60’. Terrible to try to fish. Will be prepared with some seedless setups on the next round. Still a good day overall. Took some pics of some of the fish o caught earlier in the day.. but kept catching and stopped snapping pics. Fun day out there. Saw a nice sized black bear, cow nose rays eating jellyfish (got stung by one too, when I went to rinse my hands after releasing a red drum), and dolphins everywhere.

All undersized and out of season fish went back, to be caught another day.

Check out this school of Red Drum!! I did not take this pic / drone footage. This was taken a week or so back, by an NC YouTuber I met…. not too far from where I was fishing last Friday. All appear to be top of slot / over slot! Acres of fish!

Insane!!

I don’t think he caught it where he said he did. I’m gonna need coords to verify ..

In other news.

2 mornings at the big ditch and no stripers to show for it.

Hit up MHC Port area yesterday. Started off nice, then the water spouts hit. Rain threatened but held off. I’m all a good day of catching. I totally forgot to take a pic of the haul until it was too late. I kept several pigfish, which I will fry whole, and a grey trout (I caught several greys, but you are only allowed to keep one per day). Caught lots of undersized black sea bass. I also live lined pinfish in hopes of catching a cobia, but no luck… the pinfish did bring some excitement… I had two different big king mackerels hit. One cut my pinfish off just behind the hook. The second rocked my bait at full speed and cut through my 100lb test mono like hot butter. Next outing I will use wire mackerel rigs, just in case, even if I am targeting cobia.

Almost forgot….

PSA: the lizard fish are here and in full force!
