Wuhan, nCV, germs....

We have only tested about 15,000 people. The numbers are not telling us the real picture yet.

My son works at a grocery store and said people were camped out before opening today. I expect full blown riots before Monday
My wife had to go to the store last night for a can of something she had forgotten to buy earlier. Bottled water and TP were cleaned out, but the only other items that were mostly missing were store-brand items that were on sale. Nevertheless, I do think the stupidity will escalate for a while; a guy in the checkout line behind me was phoning his wife to coordinate topping off the gas in both of their cars.

One of these NC cases was an adolescent who lied about a recent trip to Northern Italy with her friends while checking in for a doc appointment. Of course, friends tested positive for it and now this adolescent has exposed a whole Dr. Office.
remember that next time you see ANY study based on interviews that don't require proof of answers.

Tulsa Gun Show has been canceled. Promoter here at the Hickory show just announced it over the loud speaker.

I never learned how to multi-quote.

@wvsig some places in China did it sooner, but already had a higher number of CV19-infected people. I think some places in Europe pulled the trigger later in the process than we did. Totally agree, we do not know.
Every province apart from Hubei has acted faster than the US. Apart from Hubei, the province with most confirmed cases is Guangdong with 1356. US is already above that. And more importantly the current growth of infection in Guangdong is very, very slow; in the US it will be substantially higher. Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea have all acted more quickly than the US. IMHO, this is a huge failure given that we had months to prepare, and weeks after we saw it spread to other East Asian countries.

For sure, Italy and the rest of Western Europe waited too long. We won't know how close we are to Italy until we start widespread testing and see just how big the infection iceberg is. Hopefully the relatively low rate of smoking and low air pollution in the US will help mitigate how severe the infections are.

Using at the moment snapshots without any widespread testing is just guessing. You are estimating the size of an iceberg by only observing the portion above water.

Less than 10 days ago, Trump was saying how we had "15 cases and very quickly going to 0". And now we are over 2000 cases, and we still don't have widespread testing. I could have provided a similar snapshot of Italy - but look where they are now.

Do not underestimate unchecked exponential growth.

SE PA is mostly off from schooling for next 2 weeks. Montgomery Co is some type of epicenter and they are asking non essential businesses to close. I could easily see martial law in the near future as supplies are running out everywhere around Philly. Where this all goes is anyones guess at this point. Im mostly hunkered with a wife on quarantine but mostly covered on essentials. While I was capping off the vehicles there was a dude who found a 4 pack of toilet paper in the gas station....I thought he was going to dance. He said he had been riding around for 4 hours looking as he was out. The time for "getting ahead of this" has passed and we are running on media perception by the masses now....should end well

Trump declared national emergency. That and presser are another good step in terms of him getting ahead of the virus.

Someone needs to teach him how to read a teleprompter and stay on message. He wanders and contradicts himself way too much.

Reactions: Me.
So, we have all these people testing positive, but how many are symptomatic and how many are really ill/hospitalized and how many are in crisis?

I think that’s the overreaction part to extent, fed mostly through force of hand by media reaction with some sprinkled pinches if unknown. We do k now, that as a society, we would be obliterating our elderly population. Which causes some moral dilemma, unlike say, the Herpes virus, which estimates project is in the cells of nearly 70% of folks on the earth. The latter poses little risk and is absolutely beyond repair.

honestly, hindsight would tel me the elderly should be in quarantine and have the most say in the game. Corona (thank effing God, appears to produce little [acute] harm in pediatric aged population). Adult is mostly okay and geriatric is f%#ed

Then we have the tidbit that the US refused internationally-available test kits because they were producing nearly 50% false negatives.

yeah, but you're going to run out of tissues, and then you face the decision of if you can afford to use toilet paper as a replacement or not.
Or just use the trusty old sock...

wouldn’t it grow a toenail then?

Maybe we should just put you in charge of handling the US's response to COVID-19. After all, your assessment of the financial implications and fallout in the other thread was spot on (see below) LOL o_O - (/sarc)

I am considering pushing my entire IRA contribution for the year into the market today. LOL

You didn't (or that's what you said).

Markets are already rebounding

They ain't (Actually, they're down about 25% from their all time high).

Im heading to walmart for some document frames in a bit, I'll wonder over to the food section and look around. Curious what is out of stock.

"regular" people are waking up to the prepping thing and getting lots of stuff on hand. But, as another said, probably too late for many things.

All that said, Im still not overly concerned as far as the health aspect goes. I dont worry about getting it. I really dont worry about dying from it. Or anyone I know, except the elderly.

My concern, and what @Railsplitter pointed out a few posts up, is the economy.
Stock market dropping.
So many events closed down (big ones) that it WILL have a local economic effect.
That worries me to a point, larger than health concerns, but not panic mode.

I worry about a recession. Ive had two since being in high school, I know it'll be ok. Might have to tighten up the money strings some, but, overall, should be ok. But it does still worry me

My parents are in their 70s. My mother is in the late stages of cancer treatment getting post operative Chemo for a few more months. Outcome of surgery and pre cancer health were good enough that they skipped radiation. My father needs a heart valve replacement, badly. While both quit some time back, they both inhaled tobacco like it was going out of style for 50+ years.

If they contract the disease it will probably kill them. I would hate if it were me or my wife to get it and then unknowingly spread it to them.

My grandmother is in her late 70s and smoked for decades (quite about 16 or 17 years ago).
While she's fairly healthy, she's my only concern.

I do hope your parents are ok

France following Italy's lead and closing all non-essential businesses. Spain declares national emergency.

Trump extends travel ban to UK and Ireland.

Cracks me up that so many continue to maintain that it's just the flu. How many more countries do you need to see react like this to change your mind? Do you think you understand this virus and it's unchecked impact better than the local and national medical personnel in countries that are dealing with many cases?

Many covid19 patients in the ICU in the Netherlands are under 50. Yeah, it's just the flu, bro.

Some European countries, including Germany, Sweden and UK, are adopting the herd immunity approach - i.e., just let it burn through the population and deal with the sick. Quite the gamble for a new virus - i.e., no immunity, and where none of the countries that have arrested the transmission dared try for herd immunity.

I'm glad Trump shut down air travel from Europe. You cannot have free flow of people between regions that are trying for containment and those that are betting it all on herd immunity.

I too worry more about the economy than being sick. Our company just announced that should full timers be reduced to part time hours, they will retain their benefits. But, as some have brought out, what if during thus time, you don't end up making sufficient wages to cover your benefits. What then. Just one of many unintended and complicated consequences.

My employer (large computer/networking company) announced remote work for all who can. We have labs, but those folks are pretty small number and not a densely populated space to begin with. The keyboard-whackers are packed pretty closely together so I'm glad they "allowed" it. I try to work from home as much as possible so this is perfect for me. Obviously not an option for a lot of folks who need to be physically at work to be paid.

This summer is going to be a rough stretch for a lot of people... our neighborhood and town fb page are already marshalling ideas on how to share resources and help food businesses and other service industries survive. It's encouraging to see the motivation for folks to help others in a way that doesn't call for big crowds.

I agree, the economic impact of this is going to be far worse than the illness itself. Some folks are going to be hurting after this. That really sucks.

Hopefully America rebounds even stronger. Should be a wake up call regarding our reliance on other countries.

“potato chips made right here in America” or toilet paper or WeTF for that matter...buttttt the bag we sell it in is produced in China and the packaging material is from Singapore. Oh and the seasoning is from Italy. Soooo we can’t feed you with our product at moment.

The reliance we have on global supply chain has almost become needlessly complicated. IMO this is a shortfall of capitalism and poor performing corporate leaders. They need to grow shareholder earnings, but their marketing sucked or market share strategy didn’t work or w/e and so they look for ways to save a million here a million there...next thing you know the supply chain for a product with 10 components has more sources of origin in it than the DNA in a package of ground beef. It’s nuts.

corporate leaders, need to suck up their pride and have a bad quarter here and there. The manifestation of saving what is likely less than the cost of a single executive has created a monster that ironically will not only bring them down, but the entire global economy.

I hit up WM today, lines were not bad at all (about 3pm on a Saturday)
BUT
-pain relief, out
-cold/flu meds, out
-tp, out
-eggs, out
-peanut butter, half gone
-white bread, gone
-bottled water, gone
-POWDERED laundry detergent gone, liquid they had a ton of
-bleach, gone.

those are the things I really noticed.
I got my essentials and left...document frames, a car floor mat, and a tire pressure gauge lol
I bought the regular/normal stuff online like usual, but did notice that there were NO slots available for pick up tomorrow (Sunday), and only two, one hour slots open on Monday.

NC Schools are closed for at least two weeks.
We dont really know anything more than that right now
Im not thrilled about it
