I’m hoping Santa clause will be able to find a 10mm 1911 for me for Christmas. The rock island double stack has really caught my attention. I honestly didn’t know there was such a thing as double stack 1911 10mm. I love the idea of a double stack, but on the other hand the single stack feels so good in my hand and I haven’t held the double stack yet.

This will be my first 1911. I don’t shoot 45 and 9mm 1911s are just meh IMO. Do I have to worry about something like the rock island price point guns being finicky? I’m used to glocks that just work I don’t want to be messing with recoil springs and mess like that trying to get this thing to run reliably.

Yeah I've two of the ria 10 mm
the fullsize and the commander.
Both single stacks
I love em.
Get some good ammo like the sig or underwood
So far mine haven't been finicky with ammo but every time I post that in a thread the next post is mine wouldn't run with this or that ammunition so your experience may differ.

Can't speak about 10mm, but my RI double-stack in 9mm/22TCM is very reliable and extremely fun to shoot. Magazines are pricey @~$50 ea and it only came with one IIRC. Buy it!!!

If you reload, get prepared to scavenger hunt for your fired brass. The 1911s typically throw them 30-50 feet. The Glock 15-30 feet.
I have Kimber 5”, Springfield 6” RMO, and BUL (Magnum Research made in Israel) 10mm. They each have fully supported bull barrels. So far, no issues, other than guys at the steel rifle range wanting to shoot the SA at the 250 yard plate.
If you are recoil shy, the .45ACP is probably more useful😳

I remember distinctly shooting The First 10mm. The fabulous Bren 10...It was a 200 grainer advertised at 1,200 FPS. Those first ones were by Norma I think...they were Hot...I shot about 100 rounds that day and by the end I had it down "pat" but the first magazine got my full attention. The Bren was the Cat's Meow...I would much rather had the gun I ordered than my deposit returned...such is life.

I own two RIA 1911s and neither have given me issues. The only complaint I have about them is that the hole you use to trap the recoil spring during disassembly keeps the spring under some insane tension. The Ruger 10MM 1911s I own have the hole further out and I don't feel like the recoil spring is going to put a hole in my ceiling if the paperclip gives on those.

One of my RIAs clearly had a very busy previous life and shows a lot of wear. In my mind, this is a good thing since it shows it shot well enough to be used frequently.

Also, agreed with @Amanda4461 about brass. I feel like a crackhead looking for a dropped rock every time I am rummaging through grass looking for my cases.

My RIAs are the 6 and 12 o'clock guns below.

I also have a RIA 10 double stack, as well as the 9/22TCM version, and both run very well. I have a Kimber 10 (don’t recall the model right off) that I got as part of a trade and it’s run with no problems as well. The various Grock 10s will run, but they are, well boring! 🤣 Almost ended up with a Tanfoglio Witness Stock in 10 and kick myself for not committing…pic of itD13A7E09-B479-4D37-8BE1-6CBA5E108A58.jpeg

I’m used to scavenging for brass my flicks Will going then 30+ feet with my full power hand loads. I’m not scared of the recoil I like shooting full power loads with factory 10 round mag out of my 29. My pinky hangs off the end of the grip and it’s a handful to say the least.

I love my Delta Elite … but the actual best overall to me is a 3rd Gen S&W 1006. That is one of the WTH did I trade it ones for me. Yes, it’s a DA/SA single stack 9 round handgun but those 1006’s are tanks that I would run anything from meh commercial loads of today up to Buffalo Bore hardcasts. Now that being said get your 1911 for Christmas BUT start askin’ for a 1006 for your Birthday unless you can find the rare cousin 1026 🤤

Check out Cosaint Arms in Flat Rock NC. He just started making some seriously nice double stack 10mms

The green is meh but he can do any color

You don’t shoot 45? What the heck is wrong with you man? 😱

Someone set this gentlemen straight.

I had several 10mm 1911s back in the 80s and 90s when they were popular the first time. They are long gone and I can't say I have a need/desire for 10mm or 1911s or 2011s nor 45 for that matter. If I hadn't gone the 44 magnum route I might have played around with 10mm again but I have to say the flexibility of revolver loads plus not having to deal with magazines fits my recreational handgun needs real well. I am sticking with disposable plastic in 9mm for carry.

I've owned the Delta Elite, a Ruger, and RIA double stack. The RIA was the pick of that litter by a mile (and the Colt very disappointing), but somebody wanted it for more than I payed for it.

I did put flat bottom firing pin stops in all of them, required minor fitting. Otherwise, brass ejection was just stupid and all over the place.

10mm 1911s are the way 10mm should be shot. The ability to fit a flat-bottom FPS and really tune the timing with mainsprings and recoil springs goes a long way towards comfort. Plus, for a cartridge that shines in a hunting role, having the best possible trigger helps.

Edited to add: make sure you get a chance to put your hands on any double-stack 1911 that's not a true 2011 before buying. The Para and RIA double stacks can be a little thick for some hands. Single stack is always a safe bet... especially with the quality of mags available for 10mm guns.

I have a single stack RI 1911 in 10mm and it’s been a whole lot of fun. Only issue is feeding it these days!

Another +1 for the Rock 1911, commander size....super fun and rock solid performance. Also the G20 and G40 have been silly crazy reliable and accurate.....so I vote buy all 10mm variations and shoot them!!!

Any leads on these 16 round magazines for the RIA? Ive read the gun comes with one mag and I haven’t been able to find anymore in stock.

I went and ran a couple mags through the gun yesterday in between family christmas commitments. It shot good other than a few times the slide wouldn’t go all the way back into battery. A firm bump to the back of the slide and it was back in battery ready to shoot. I’m hoping it’s just that lube they pack these guns in on the coil spring and in the slide.

I just took it apart for the first time (had to find a YouTube vid this is my first 1911) and the inside of the frame and slide is covered in the same oil that was on the outside. Hopefully after a good cleaning and lube it’ll run a little better. I know I should have field stripped and cleaned it before I shot it but with everything going on I didn’t have a chance until now.
