1911 Pistol Building

Montgomery county community college runs a good gunsmithing program, but it won’t be necessarily specific to just 1911s.

Larry Vickers used to run a 1911 building class but he’s had some pretty big distractions the past few years.

MCC has a great 1911 pistol build class if you really want to learn how to do it correctly. It will be under the NRA Classes on their web sight.

Is it only offered during certain time of the year? I did not see if listed under the NRA classes. I might not be looking in the right place. If you have a link that would be great!

Yes. I just learned it was earlier this month. The list for next year will post in mid to late December.
I set a reminder to check next years calendar. Even if I finish this build, I’m sure I’ll want to build another.

The guy who runs the school used to post here about the school and classes a few years ago.

Someone posted last year that this guy was one of the directors of the gunsmithing school.

Alright so this project has started. Got the frame and slide from @ronn47 today. Looking for recommendations on .45 acp 5” match grade parts. Since this is my first attempt at building a 1911 I don’t want to go all in on the parts. But I do want a solid performer. Anyways, make your recommendations for both top of the line and middle of the road parts.

I built a ss Caspian frame/ blued Gold Cup eons ago. The GC slide would not go on the frame but it did start. I remember using Colgate to lap it until it finally fit. Also used a drill press to turn down a NM barrel bushing until it fit tight into the slide. A whole lot of work. Never did another that was that much effort. I have assembled others that were just assembly. FIRST, get a copy of Kuhnhausen’s 1911 book. It will tell you everything you will need to know. Good luck.

As far as sourcing parts, I would check out Dawson Precision, Cylinder and Slide, and Brownells of course.
