I also hear he is veery particular about his buckets!

But seriously, we have offered, but she is my gunpowder princess. She loves knives, guns, the smell of gunpowder in the morning, as well as fingernails, makeup, hair dolling and cute outfits. So, she maybe one day I’ll get her to pee in a bucket, but for now it’s “eww gross dad.” So I take the half day hit just to keep her out there.

6-7 hours in a box is a haul for kids.

Yep.

Part of keeping kids interested in such activities is also knowing when to knock off when their interest wanes. If the majority of their time is fun, active, challenging, etc. Then they'll always look forward to the next time.

They'll grow beyond that eventually and learn to enjoy the slow times for what they are... just another aspect to be enjoyed.

Definitely. Asked my daughter this past Monday if she wanted to go deer hunting with me over Thanksgiving. She said yeah can I shoot one. I said absolutely if you want to but we’ll need to go shoot so you’ll be ready and we can go tomorrow evening. Next day, pawpaw asked her if she wanted to play checkers. I got picked over checkers. I’m not mad. Haha. I even tried to bribe her but lost. I’m not one to force anything one them so she had a blast playing checkers lol.

This was her the last time she went with me. Laying in the floor of the stand with my heated coat covered over her 07D0A3CA-0355-407E-A87D-035C144432DC.jpeg

My 8yo son shot his first deer this morning. 10.5” 5.56mm with a 62gr Barnes TTSX. I thought it was a low shot but the dirt kick up was the pass through. She crashed out about 7 yards off the lane

I hunted with a lever gun .30-30 shoulder destroyer at that age. He’s got a suppressed shorty that has a sun powered optic. The future is now

First deer, you smear blood on the face, btw.

You may have done it wrong.

Turns out good!!! Puts meat on the ground…. Well, most of it anyway. Lol 😂

And some on the trees, little bit on the bushes, leaves some on the bone.

Shot a buddies 45-70 at a clay target on the berm. I swear I watched that bullet just invert the earth on the berm and swallow that whole clay after it hit it.

Conditions were SO perfect this evening that I talked the boss man into letting me off 45 minutes early.

Got in the stand about 4:30. Figured a 1 hour hunt was better than no hunt.

Good sized doe came along maybe 5-10 minutes before end of legal shooting light.

The .45-70 made short work of her. Between the stupid straight stock and the crazy loads I set it up for (HSM Bear Load +P 430 grain Hard Cast Flat Point Gas Check) it tried to make short work of my middle finger too! LOL! I did NOT set this gun up with deer in mind but wanted to see what it would do in that regard. Maybe it was the lever action gods punishing me for setting up such a monstrosity of a rifle. Remlin with MWI rail, safety delete, Aimpoint T1, and jungle tiger stripe spray paint. But hey, it's just a Remlin I got in trade.

I'm thankful that conditions have been better here lately and my family is certainly thankful for the meat!

@thrillhill is right. The conditions were perfect.

I ran late because I had to finish making wifey's supper, but I still managed to get in the blind about 3:50.

Wind was in my face, and 7.5" 300blk SBR by my side.

Saw maybe 15 or so, mostly does, but this little feller was the only one that decided to get within "range."

Nice broadside setup, but my phone had died and figured instead of going classic double lung/heart, I decided he needs to drop.

I made the noise you make when you want to get a dog's attention. He stood perfectly broadside, but turned his head and neck in such a fashion, that I was able to put a 110gr soft point just below his jaw.

The Beast! Oh, and the little 7pt.

Don’t even want to think about the conditions. Messed up with my last doe and notched the day/month on my last buck tag by accident.

So now I’m one tag away from tagging out but have to hope the replacement tag dnr’s sending gets here before the season ends. :/

today 12-15
1st text from oldest son: I almost got one. Good buck came by chasing a doe.
few text later: picture of blood on a leaf.

Me: Oh crap.

text from youngest son: look at buck on camera
Me - look at big buck on camera, it's a nice deer, in front of the box stand that oldest son is hunting out of.

few text and a call later, I'm debating on leaving the office, but I called the neighbor to help.

I leave office and get there and the son lost the blood trail when he came out to get the neighbor.

So after a couple of minutes we find the track where he went through a mud hole and we found blood.

A minute or too later and 15" wide makes it the widest deer any of us has killed. now I'm back at the office.

he thinks that there was 3 different bucks there this morning. Because 1st buck and dead buck came from the same direction.

It was a meat day today.

Congrats!

Unfortunately, I'll be going back tomorrow to look for one.

I hit her low, thinking I took one or both front legs from under her. She hopped into the woods like a kangaroo, after dropping, but I'm hoping something got inside the chest cavity.

I hate days like these.

Dang thats a bummer… if I was closer I’ve got a couple decent hounds that will track. Got anyone with dogs close?

Today was probably the last day I get to hunt this season and was close to getting skunked. This guy walked out in the field about 140 yds. away with about 20 minutes of daylight left. 6.8 SPC went bang, he went flop. Only had to drag him about 20 yds. out of the plowed field to load him in the truck.

Healthy 8-pointer harvested late in the day on Nov 19, 2022, with a neck shot at 43 yards that dropped him instantly in his tracks. 180gr Federal Fusion round from a suppressed Remington 700 SPS Tactical chambered in .308 WIN.
The hide on the exit side of the neck was so thick/tough that it captured the bullet -- which was naturally mushroomed after the spinal hit, but (surprisingly) mostly intact. (I saved it.)

Doe harvested today (12/30/22) a little before 4pm with a shot to the boiler room at 15 yards. After the impact she ran ~20 yards before expiring. (Also 180gr Federal Fusion round from a suppressed Remington 700 SPS Tactical chambered in .308 WIN.) Please pardon my drag in the photo; I was short on time and didn't bother to remove it.

More meat for the freezer...
