45-70?

I have a Mauser in 45/70. It can be loaded from big BB gun range to shoulder howitzer. Blast to shoot with a moderate load.

Common modern misconception for deer is velocity and expansion. All velocity does is compensate for poor shooting and range estimation. Use a heavy lead boolit with a wide meplat at about 1400fps and put the shot on target and most deer are DRT. Expansion not needed as the boolit is already huge compared to most modern rounds and will let lots of air in and blood out.

Many shooters these days get wrapped up in paper energy stats and don't understand the principle of momentum. Simplistic explanation- high velocity BB v low velocity brick, they're both going to leave a mark. Only one will really punish the shoulder due to recoil impulse.

One other thought, lots of guys lost limbs during the Civil War from gunshot wounds. A study of the damage done by a slow, heavy minie ball hitting bone showed that even modern trauma docs would be hard pressed to deal with the damage much better than the battlefield surgeons of the war. So physics don't change, only opinions. Get a 4570 and enjoy the addiction. :)

Back in the day when Val Forgett ran Navy Arms, he had a number of Siamese Mausers converted to 4570 and sold them in rifle and carbine lengths. It was a popular conversion back then since the 8mm rimmed cartridge of the Mauser is very close to a 4570 case.

The Siamese Mauser is reported to be one of the strongest large ring actions out there with many very powerful rifles being built on it. In the 4570 world, it ranks with the Ruger No 1 in strength. I've chronoed 500gr fmj out of my gun at 2k fps. At that level, it will kill one one end and maim on the other. I don't shoot that load hardly ever but it's nice to know I can. These days it's usually a 400gr at about 1400fps. Still plenty of power and pleasant to shoot.

I don't understand the question? The 45-70 is good for hunting anything on the planet. You just have to load it according to what you are after. I have several 45-70's in different configurations, from Sharps to Marlins and I wouldn't feel undergunned anywhere. They are great for deer, bear, elephant, Toyota. Just get it and enjoy!
Here are a few of mine! I have them in barrel lengths 18.5" - 34".
