5 rounds of .38 special or 10 rounds of .380?

I have carried both for long periods of time. I have carried 2 MAXs for over a year with shooting done weekly. I am amazed that anybody here would think I would carry Any gun that I was not sure of...that said.....I do carry 2.....Murphy is alive.
As you like to say, we each work out our own salvation. But I think it's easily demonstrable that an LCP is not nearly as reliable as a Glock 19 or a revolver, other things equal.

When I carried Glock 19s, and I did, I carried 2. Same with revolvers...on the Demonstrable issue, when will you be coming to Battery Oaks to do this demo? We usually have a good crowd on Sundays, the more to be demoed to the better. In my best Doc Holiday voice...Say When.

ETA: I just noted you are not a supporting member. That is a requirement to come to Battery Oaks...BUT for this valuable demonstration we will waive that requirement.

Thanks very much for the invite, and I really wish I could come down and meet you, but it's a long drive for me and it's not realistic. I don't have to demo anything for you, though, since I know you're a daily shooter with your own range. If you want to try shooting an LCP in your support hand only after applying a little baby shampoo (a very rough simulation of blood) to the hand and gun, and then run the test again with a Glock 19 and a S&W 19, I don't think it'll take too many rounds to start seeing the differences in the number of malfunctions per gun. I'm talking in this thread about the reliability of small autoloaders in the context of personal defense, so worrying about one-handed or wounded shooting seems pretty relevant to me, as would firing from compromised positions, and other such unfortunate matters.

My LCP runs just about perfect when I'm standing still on the range, have the gun clean and lubed, and have a solid grip. Start messing around with those conditions and things can get a bit shady. My CZ P07, on the other hand, is almost impossible to make malfunction. (If you get something to block the hammer from reaching the firing pin, you can shut that gun down, but otherwise it just laughs at you.) I carry the LCP when I have to, and I trust the gun to work properly, unless things get really ugly--as long as I do my part with maintenance and such. I wouldn't want it to get dry and linty. In another recent threat I said that I clean up my carry P07 about once a month or so. If I carried an LCP every day, I'd probably clean and lube it weekly, just to be sure. That's me.

I'm not saying anything here about your carry choices. That's you. If your LCP Max passes your personal test for carry viability, I trust your vetting process was solid and have absolutely nothing to say about it at all.

I personally wouldnt feel terribly comfortable with either.

Exception being if I were to put a LCP through it's paces and ensure that it's reliable and accurate. IME, LCPs aren't that reliable, and I don't like small j frames as a rule of thumb (trigger, sights, cartridge, etc).

For me it's a G19 sized pistol appendix, rds, weapon light (TLR-7a minimum). And a G42 in the pocket or for super deep carry if I have to. I want to be able to run a plate rack at 50 yards with my carry gun, is that a realistic standard? Probably not, but like someone once said, gun fights are open division, and I don't want to be severely outgunned if it ever comes to it.

I can certainly shoot far better with a 1911 or Hi Power than any compact pistol. Even my 3913 is much easier to shoot than the LCP or 442. But for me at least, unless anarchy has broken out across the state, I'm not going to be carrying anything full size. The weight and difficulty in concealment just works against them for me. Someone once said that the gun you have is better than any gun sitting back home in the safe. I'm much more likely to drop the LCP max or 442 in my pocket than strap on the 3913 or something larger.

I appreciate the insights that are being offered on this thread.

I believe in the idea of carry the most ammo you can for the situation. Are there situations were a 5 shot wheel is the best option, yes.

I have LCP's and J frame S&W 38's. I have shot them enough to know that they are reliable. I can get 7 rounds in the LCP and 5 rounds in the revolver. If I'm in a situation where I limp wrist, the revolver wins. If I have a bad primer and the round doesn't go off, the revolver wins. When concealment is a concern, the LCP wins. When power and energy is a concern, the revolver wins. More than 5 rounds needed, the LCP wins.

I don't feel like there is enough difference between the two to call either the winner. Carry what you like and are proficient with.
