Long time glock fan (first pistol I picked all by myself was a G23 back in 1992), decided to try something new since the Gen5 offered nothing new/old I really wanted.

I liked the M&P 2.0 more than anything else I played with at the NRA show so with the compact out I decided to check them out again.

The compact is not G19 sized exactly, the G19 fits in the S&W holster but the reverse is not true so clearly the glock is dimensionaly smaller, and I felt that if I wanted to carry a G19 sized gun... I would just go with the proven G19. It's less busy than the S&W too, I like the clean look on a carry gun.

Since I might want to run it in a few matches, the larger guns appealed. The extra large M&P only comes in poop brown with an external safety. With my 1911 background the safety wasn't that big of a deal, but no way did I want a huge brown pistol. Not my thing.

So....

I grabbed a few extra mags and a holster and took it to the range. Fired slow fire, ran a few plate racks, and did drills of two shots against IDPA targets from the holster back to back with my trusty G34. It was kinda cool that with the M&P holster on would fit either gun (with the G34 rattling around a little) so I could swap between pistols every few shots and still be able to draw for each string of fire.

Put 200 rounds of the finest 115gr Wolf, Tula and Barnaul steel through it with no issues. It shoots a lot softer than the G34, but the glock has 8k+ rounds on the spring and is due for a change here in the next few thousand. Didn't notice any strange ejection or anything, it threw brass, err steel, just the same as the G34.

The trigger is really nice, not 1911 nice or even Walther nice, but nice. It's better than the stock G34 trigger I run by far, and I'll be leaving it alone. I didn't notice the dingus or whatever people call the pivot in the middle.

The reset is way shorter though, I had a few times on the plate rack where I sent a round between plates because I was too rough on the trigger trying to find the reset takeup like the G34. I guess those are technically ADs since I wasn't expecting the pistol to fire at that time.

The whole grip angle thing doesn't bother me, took nothing to switch back and forth between the G34 and this guy between strings of fire, even when those strings were only 2-3 rounds. I tended to hold the M&P higher because I was trying to make it's front sight seem as large as the Trijicon HD on the G34, but that's not possible since it's about 1/2 the height. When it was visually equal, the gun was aimed way too high. I've got Trijicon HDs on all my other guns basically so a small front sight looks weird to me now.

My thumb hanging on the slide release is always a problem, but not too bad on the M&P because the slide stop is recessed and stiff. I liked the CZ 10 thingy, but the slide release is huge and runs right into my thumb. I don't use the release during reloads very often (prefer overhand) so not being able to activate it with my firing hand is a good thing in my book.

I tried all the grip panels, and kept the medium on there. The small feels too small to me, and the larger ones with the backstraps have that ugly gap between the beavertail and the frame. I found that on the draw I could actually snag the web of my hand on that gap if I wasn't perfectly 'down' on the gun during the draw. That's about the only thing negative I've found so far.

So there you go, long winded way of saying, I like it.

Almost forgot, the mags are already showing signs of wear. I've done a bunch of dry mag change drills at home and the live fire at the range and the finish is already scratching off. Not a big deal, but kinda surprised it happened so quickly on brand new mags.

Great review. Thanks for sharing. Being an M&P guy who compromised to a Gen 4 G19 for a carry gun due to its size and capacity, I am excited about this particular gun. Just waiting until the LEO dealers get them in to pick one up!

Pretty sweet, hope you continue to enjoy it!

Trigger better than your G34?? I had a G35 via trade and loved that trigger! My apex poly trigger in my FS isn't nearly as good as that G35 was.

I was already planning on getting the new compact but I'm a little more excited for it now.

Got my 2.0 compact in today, and i'm loving it. Got it from iammo.com, with 3 mags, night sights, and a range bag. Cost was 450.00. Only got to put 150 rds through it today, but it ran flawless and put the holes in the target were i aimed.
The trigger on mine is much better than the 1st gen m&p. Very pleased with this handgun, if you get a chance shoot one. I think you will be surprised.

That's a pretty good deal, did it cover shipping and the transfer fees in that price??

Thanks for the great review. I was excited to hear about the 2.0 and really wanted get my hands on one as soon as I could. I came across a full-sized 9mm and almost immediately put it back down after picking it up for the stippling on the grip is too aggressive for my liking. I do like a secure grip feeling but not to the point that I will need to wear gloves while shooting.

Thanks for the review. I would love to try one out. I am somewhat intrigued by the Gen5 G19 because of the ambi slide release (southpaw here), but that's about the only thing.

thats one thing againest the 2.0 compact, the ambi slide release doesnot work on the right side of the gun for southpaws.

I thought the grip would be to rough also, but after 250 rds its not that bad. I will but Talon grips on when they release them.

I just put Talon grips on my G34 to try to make it more like the M&P grip texture. It seems rough, until you actually try using it then it makes sense.

I have the rubber on most of my guns. Loved them right up until I shot the 2.0 Compact. I'm thinking about switching to granulate for everything other than my carry piece. That surface and love handles just can't coexist.

I "represent" that remark! LOL

Just put another 250 rds through my 2.0c running some speed type drills and man I love this gun. As expected no issues but it just molds to my hand and that texture keeps it there. I tested it out carrying it iwb for a day no issues although it definitely is rougher than the gen 4 glocks.

Finally got to the range with my new 2.0 compact. Man I really love this gun, it just hits what you aim at almost effortlessly. After playing around at 15 and 25yds we walked it back to 50, 75 and 100, gots first round hits on my Steel IDPA target at each range. At 125, it took me 2 rounds to get on target. Very impressed with this gun and it will likely replace my 19 as my main carry gun.

Thats exactly what mine has done also. I dont have access to shoot at those distances but at my range in happy with it out to 25 yds. I will admit that the texture was a bit too rough against my bare skin but i hit it with 1400 grit paper like 4 swipes just on the skin side and it was just enough to not notice it anymore. Definitely confident that this will remain my edc for some time.

I'm torn...

I'm a S&W guy, have several M&Ps, including the 5" 9mm 2.0 & 4.5" .45 2.0... And the 3.5" 9mm "1.0"...

I'm struggling to decide between the 4.25" 9mm 2.0 & the 4.0" 9mm 2.0 compact...

The .25" barrel difference is negligible to me. So the difference is handle length. Shorter is easier to conceal but longer makes it easier to handle in action... Any other noticeable differences?

I've shot the 4.25" and it's great. I've held the 4" 2.0 compact and it feels very similar to my 1.0 compact's handle, which is barely short enough to be too short...

When this is my struggle if the day, life is good...

My grandfather used to joke..."A 1/4" makes no difference? How about if it were on the end of your nose". ;)

The grip texture is also different from your 1.0. Some hate and I was sure I would too. Until I shot the gun and noticed it seems glued to my hand.

I've got a virtually new one for sale. :)

Midway had M&P full sized 17 rnd mags on sale for $20, and shipping was $5 for 3 of them. Seemed like a deal so I grabbed 'em.

Man I was so excited about the new Gen5 coming out...until I shot it. It has made me seriously consider jumping ship, and with the 2.0 Compact coming out it just seems like the planets are aligning for S&W.

I used to consider myself a die hard Glock fan boy butthe more I shoot M&Ps, the less I like my Glocks. I won't ever get rid of any of the Glocks that I currently own, but I think from here on out, it's gonna be M&P for me.

The M&P (compact) is just larger than a G19 though, and for me that matters a lot.

What dimensions make the difference for you? Is it thickness, height, length, or all together?

thickness. (@Love2shoot stop snickering)

I'm a smaller guy and carry AIWB and printing is what I worry about. The extra width of the M&P along with the slide height makes it harder for me to conceal the way I like. I don't see enough advantage to the M&P to change my carry method/style vs. what I do now.

I have to say, of all the dimensions, thickness is a very important one :D. Big part of the reason I primarily carry my shield over a double stack for comfort. But carrying at 4 oclock for me g19 vs 2.0C is not noticeable, and I do shoot the MP better, even if slightly.

I do shoot the MP better, even if slightly.

My theory on this is that the glock trigger is harder to stage, or that staging it is more important. The 2.0 trigger is really nice, so getting the slack out of it is way easier. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself and am now more aware of how the glock trigger feels and how I can use it.
