I have owned quite a few gen 3's. Sold most of them I had a 4006,4516 ,4566, 4506 and a 1076. . I still have a 39-2, a 3913 and a 645. Now I'm looking for more 9mm gen 3's
This guy is the major source of my Gen 3 compulsion.

I was perfectly satisfied buying slick new plastic guns in even slicker new plastic boxes until I started talking to Gunga!

Jeppo, some folks have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to enlightenment. ;) :)

And look at the fine guns you are now enjoying. :) Best regards, 18DAI

The month is off to a slow start. Only 2 Smiths this week and only one of them old.

@DLam Is that the correct slide for the 6906? I noticed there is a red dot (safety) on both the slide and frame.

Now I feel awful for pointing it out. To compensate, I'll keep an eye out for one, for you. ;)

Some of u fellas may recall I briefly owned an 845 a few years back. I think I listed it on the other forum as it was about 1.5 years back.

I found it in a pawn shop and it took me 6 months on layaway to pay it off...but in the end I sold it on the smith forum to pay some bills.

845s are great pistols! I have two of them--one from '97 and the other from '98.

Dlam, your 6906 is a very early production model. The slide that is on it is correct.

The very early "transitional" model 6906s and the initial production batch all had the 669 style rear sight and the offset S&W rolmarks with the 4-line on the left side of the slide. Hooked trigger guards too.

Back then S&W didnt waste anything. So left over 669 slides were used on the new and improved 3rd gen 6906. The transitional models had AIP serial prefixes. That stood for Automatic Improvement Program.

Wayne Novak was instrumental in taking the 2nd gen pistols - 669, 645, 659 ect - and redesigning/improving them into the 3rd gen guns. But it took awhile for S&W to use his sights on the new 3rd gen guns, in part due to a reluctance to pay him royalties on the use of his product.

That is the long explanation to why your 6906 is wearing that rear sight. But it is correct, for the time frame. Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI

thanks. I will check my serial # when I get home.

question. I presume that since the 5906 has the same rear sight as the 6906, it is a transitional 3rd gen also, possibly with a 659 slide?

I'm relieved. Thanks @18DAI. :)

Stentor I am green with envy at those 845s. ;) Regards 18DAI

Edited to add: One day several years ago, an LGS I did a lot of business with called me. They knew I carried a 4506-1 on the job and knew a little about S&W pistols.

He says, whats an 845? I tell him and mention that they are scarce. He says, "I got a guy in here with one. He wants to trade it for a Glock 21." I ask if he has a blue label G21 with 3 mags and night sights in stock. He does. I tell him to show it to the guy and I am on my way down there to pay for the G21.

Sadly, he hated the Glock and left with the 845 before I could get there. :(

That would have been the trade of a lifetime (G21 for 845)!

I am a big fan of S&W 3rd Generation Performance Center pistols and have been able to pick up a number of them over the last few years (the 845s are among my favorites of the various models--they're sweet shooters).
