ATF Brace grab -- current status?

Okay, simple question then. If I take a rifle and shorten or remove the buttstock such that the OAL is now less than 26” have I made:
1. an SBR (with a curiously long barrel)
2. An AOW
3. Something else or it depends on other factors.
I’m going with SBR.

SBR.

26 USC 5485(a)(4) requires NFA registration of "a weapon made from a rifle if such weapon as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches or a barrel or barrels of less than 16 inches in length . . . ."

OAL alone can make an SBR if it's a conversion of an existing, completed rifle.

I can’t like this, but I accept it. Guess it doesn’t really matter until you try to transfer it.

followup, if you cut a shotgun stock down so OAL is less than 26” but barrel is longer than either 14” pr 16” whatever the normal not a SBS min length is, does it become a long barrel SBS?

28 USC 5485(a)(2): "a weapon made from a shotgun if such weapon as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches or a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length"

A shotgun under the NFA is a completed firearm that is designed, from the factory, to be shoulder-fired.

The non-NFA smoothbore "firearms" that exist (PGO Mossbergs, Shockwaves, etc.) are configured from the factory so that their OAL is greater than 26" regardless of barrel length.

You know that ZK22 bullpup chassis for the 10/22 that makes it look like a p90?

Yes to the SBS question.

The AOW issue is when you take an AR pistol that measures less than 26” with brace removed (and/or in a folded position if applicable) and add a foregrip.

Pistol->Rifle->Pistol=Good
Rifle->Anything else=Bad

That's an oversimplification, but the easiest way to explain it.
