whats the “best” or at least some ideas on what a good non ar, semi auto platform for shooting coyotes out ton150 yards? and Go!!!

I’ve never been coyote hunting and don’t want to break the budget. So let’s say under 1k.

Looking for something not so tacticool. But the options are really limited. Leaning now towards a DPMS LR-10 with the A2 stock and smooth hand guard.

Think the 270 may be out, but the 740/7400 can be had in .308 and you shouldn’t have any difficulties at all taking the starch of them with that cartridge.

SCAR.

Edit whoops, missed the price. All the non AR stuff that’s good is way more money

I’d 100% go with the Mini-14

If you can swing about $1500, might find a Galil ACE…

Do you consider the Brownells BRN-180 an AR?

Keltec makes the SU16 5.56 which is budget conscious

The older Mini-14s were known for bad accuracy. The new ones are good to go. If you ever think that you may level up and get night vision I’d recommend just going with an AR from the start.

Mini-14s are ok , but I have had 2 - accuracy is not any better than an AK.
AK mags are plentiful and plenty of options on upgrades and parts
I would go AK

If you want something less scary - Browning BAR

150 yards?
I hate to be that guy but an AR15 is the perfect tool for this job.
I don't really think the coyotes will care how tactical you appear when you shoot them.
The LR-10 will add nothing in terms of results, other than weigh every bit of 10 pounds (plus ammo, hope you're not walking far) kick harder and make follow up shots about impossible. Plus, you're not gonna buy one of those and mount/scope it for under 1K.
Coyotes are not known for their patience in waiting around for you to take a 2nd shot at them. Bolt action is gonna be your best bet for one shot/one kill. Mossberg Patriot, Savage Axis, and the like (with scope) can be had for $650 all day and will shoot tennis balls from 150 yards with basic effort. And they come in all the cool flavors, 223, 308, 270, 7mm, 6.5....

There's always one guy who wants to go against the grain and I guess that's me today, and I apologize in advance. I like AR15's, I'm not their biggest fan, but in this case with some sweet ammo I still think it's the perfect semi auto choice for this job.

We often say "there is no such thing as overkill".

But...

The last 2 coyotes I've killed I was using a .22lr.

To be fair they were only at 40 and 30 yards respectively. But I couldn't imagine feeling the need to lug around a .308 AR or for getting a rifle "just for" coyote hunting.

At only 150 yards I'd be tempted to run a .22 Magnum with 50 grain rounds. Maybe.

If you want to be different, might want to check out the Savage A17 WSM. Pretty flat shooting out to 150 yds, semi auto, light recoil and light weight gun, and if you are going to attempt to keep their hides, this round won’t make a mess out of them like some of the others mentioned upstream. Like @thrillhill said, they aren’t that difficult to kill with a good shot.

You didn't want an AR but later you say you may want an AR-10 clone? :D

Your parameters are a 'semi-auto, not too tacticool, less than $1,000, not an AR and good for out to 150 yds'......
The only ones I can come up with (a few mentioned already) are:

Mini-14
M1 Carbine
KelTec SU 16
SKS
Ruger LC Carbine 5.7mm
Winchester 1907 or 1910 (good luck finding .351 or .401!)

Im running a ar15 in 6.5 Grendel. AR10 is too heavy to tote around. I'm in the bolt gun 22-250 crowd. Or. 223/.224 valkyrie. The nice thing about AR yote hunting is follow up shots rapidly if needed, AR15 is the ticket for that.

The .224 Valkyrie was made for this mission. My vote is an AR in .224 Valk.

While agree it was made for this mission. Due to ammo cost and difficulty locating said ammo from time to time, I would stay away from the .224 Valkyrie.

a yote at 150 yards is in the wheelhouse of .17HMR to .22-250. Any of those cartridges will get it done.

Savage A17 or A22 would be good if you don't want an AR Style Rifle
Bolt gun in .22mag, .223, .22-250 would be great but not much chance of follow up shot
This is literally the perfect mission for a 5.56/.223 AR type gun. find an upper and lower that don't look all jazzed up and go for it.

What you’re looking for is a Marlin 1894 in .218Bee.
But you probably won’t find one for $1,000.
