I think I will be chaperoning a field trip for my daughters school next month. I have been to the park quite a few times and have never seen a sign prohibiting concealed carry. I will be driving separately anyway so I know the answer would be no if I was riding on the bus. I can leave one in my vehicle but that does no good if needed.

Backstory:

We visited my in-laws while they were camping a couple years ago and my daughters were playing on the playground when a young girl that was really dressed up with a pretty dress on and make up on and approach my oldest daughter. I wasn’t in earshot of what she said to my daughter but she told me that the little girl asked her if she wanted some candy or snacks. Fortunately we have told our daughter to always say no and to come get me or her mom. I was watching my daughter as usual but kids are kids and will make new friends so I didn’t think anything of until my daughter came up to me and told me what the little girl said and then she disappeared for a minute but soon saw her getting into some old ratty pick up truck with an older gentleman and then they took off. We informed the police officer but by the time we found one the truck was long gone and it did not have a license plate on it. So this little girl was groomed by this old pervert. Sickening.

We have since not been back. So this is why I am asking if I’m able to carry. I’m almost to the point of saying screw it I’ll do it anyway. My daughters safety and the safety of the other kids are priority. Being that it’s not on school property but at a school event is what I’m curious about.

Did you really ask this crew if you should carry, and you're going to be taking your daughters?
Yes.
Haha. I know. But I also “try” to be a law abiding citizen. But to what extent. I’m just curious what the law actually saws do I am aware if there are any issues

If you were at the park carrying and a school field trip showed up, would you go back to your vehicle and disarm? I see this as the same legal issue.

As a chaperone, I would maybe go to greater lengths to ensure my firearm isn't seen. That could cause a panic and ban you from future school events.

So I'm confident that it is legal, but there are still potential consequences to consider.

I am a law abiding citizen. Who values my own safety and my families more than any stupid law.

You should be good to carry since you aren't on school grounds or on a bus.

As @barf said bring 2 guns......maybe 3. Long gun in the car can be the backup.

Scary encounter you had with your little one.......

I also take different steps to conceal when on those grounds, longer shirt and such

Yeah I have that same thought also. And no I would not disarm.

That’s also something I’ll have to figure out. I’m tall and skinny and I imprint very easily especially being summer time. If it were winter time I would not have any problem truly concealing. I may have to carry a sling or a backpack that has a side pocket that’s easily accessible.

Just get a fanny pack! Just kidding.

Actually, one of the sneaky pete holsters that look like a phone case would work nicely.

Untucked button-up fishing shirts are my choice. Short sleeve, or long sleeve (since the long sleeves can be rolled up and usually have a strap to keep them there). Anything other than a solid color. Most of mine are Magellan. I eyeballed the closet and there’s ~15 long sleeve and ~40 short sleeve in there. I prefer the relaxed fit (instead of classic fit) for a little extra room. They also offer them in tall if you want more length. And I carry OWB everywhere.

Yeah I have a closet full of fishing shirts. Most are solid colors. I wear a long sleeve story most of the time rolled up even in summertime but I still have to be cautious of the shirt pulling up and revealing my pistol. I usually tuck the end of the shirttail under the beltclip to keep it down.

On a side note, I find that the UPF long sleeve shirts keep me color than a tee shirt

I have one of these on order. Since I'm diabetic (but not taking insulin)) I picked the insulin pump patch just so if anyone randomly asks me about my diabetes I have easy answers.

So long as you’re properly trained and in practice- I see absolutely no question here. Your last paragraph said it all.
Just to be the devils advocate- ( for background I’m an adult instructor, and often find myself in the front of a room- in hotels, conference centers, etc) In the environment that you’ll be in - with a whole LOT of potential collateral victims.. you’d better be able to justify your decision and prove that you’ve had proper training if God forbid things go bad. You’ll never forgive yourself for accidentally plugging someone else’s daughter.
Don’t get me wrong -I’m all for it… but my decision would be based on my level of confidence and training, rather than just the legal or school rules ramifications. :)

+1
I forgot how perfect these shirts are for warm weather casual carry before grabbing one off my shelf recently when my wife and I went out for dinner.

The Columbia PFG ones I have look casual, are super comfortable, and I’m sure I could conceal a FS pistol without much effort.

I need to order a couple more. I really like the long sleeve version that has the keeper-button so you can roll up the sleeves, I like that style.

Yes to your firearm, but maybe add a less lethal to your gear?

Pepper spray/pepper blaster isn't perfect, but you can be a good bit less worried about what's beyond the target with it. Maybe the kind with the marker dye so if the perp takes off after getting doused, the cops can pick them out more easily. It also looks like a toy if it is spotted, but deploys a lot like the firearm you are used to.

I work on educational property so I have had to check the laws surrounding these kind of things.
For NC:
It shall be a Class I felony for any person knowingly to possess or carry, whether openly or concealed, any gun, rifle, pistol, or other firearm of any kind on educational property or to a curricular or extracurricular activity sponsored by a school.
A field trip that you are chaperoning would be considered an extracurricular activity. But, I am not a lawyer and I didn’t sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.

I would be very, very careful. Getting busted in a restaurant is a $500 fine, no impact to your permit. At a school function, it’s a felony, big money and lose the ability to carry or even own a gun for the rest of your life. You can’t control everything. Wind blows your shirttail up, or you bend over to help a child, and the teacher sees it. And nearly all educators are just gun crazy.

No one on here will defend that law or say it makes kids safer. But if you get busted you will have some serious consequences.

"Carry, but only if you've had proper training" sounds a lot like "I believe in the 2nd amendment, but.....". I seriously doubt "I've had training" will be a valid defense if you shoot someone you didn't mean to shoot.

I was wondering the same thing. What does one considered “proper training”? And some people would say LE or military? Or I know a lot police officers that do the minimum just to qualify. I went to a local LE shoot for family and friends, I out shot 90% of the LE that were there. One needs to be well aware of the repercussions of drawing a gun and using it in any situation. It wasn’t long ago that to dad‘s got into argument and shot each others daughters that were sitting in their vehicles. Bad situation and now they’re paying for it.

Don’t go as a chaperone. Don’t even tell the school you’re going at all. It’s a public venue. Just go be a bystander with zero interaction.
Yeah well I haven’t actually been picked to be a chaperone yet but I am planning to go either way. My mom works for an elementary school and she says that a lot of the parents will show up to the school and follow the bus and be present on the field trips.

It would be hard to have zero interaction if my daughter is on the trip and she sees me. Haha.

I’ve actually been checking out the backpack EDC thread. I plan on carrying a backpack anyway and so it will be an added plus

You need two EDC handguns. One that you carry on a daily basis on your belt and another for pocket carry for situations like this.

Things like this are why I always think about how i should have a jackass shoulder rig.
good luck getting my shirt to blow that far up. It's not gonna print through my pants pocket.
All i'd have to do is worry about it pointing out the back when not intended. but that could be adjusted

Absolutely on target with this. If your on a school function it's not legal. Better off locking it in your truck and keeping your eyes on the surroundings.

If you just happen to drive yourself and show up there, while your kids field trip is going on it isn’t a part of the trip as you are not technically chaperoning.

You can do whatever you want to as long as you are prepared for the consequences. Just remember that when the officer arrests you it was your choice to knowingly violate the law.
