    Open structure call?

I feel like they’re just making up stuff now to try and justify these killings.

Absolutely ridiculous!!! Did she not have dog that would have been suficent? Watch a cop show and when they chase down someone and ask why they ran, I understand why they are afraid of the police.

When you convince a bunch of bullies or those who were bullied that Death lurks around every corner, every interaction it staring down Death, and they are fighting a war (where no such war exists), remove any semblance of actual accountability for violence against the population at large (whether malicious or negligent), and give them authority, a weapon, and an excuse.....

Dave Grossman has done an astonishing amount of damage to law enforcement.

Another reason the general public has no respect for the police.

If an LEO is that scared to death to do the job, it's time to find another job. Maybe the US needs to adopt the british system that the rank & file cops should not have firearms.

You mean piece officers cause they come in peace and you leave in pieces. Officers of 30-40 years ago would beat the crap out of you but not shoot you. I don't think we need to go back to that stuff. But I do think there are things that need to change.

No, I mean when they wore dress shoes/shirts, not combat boots/fatigues and spoke to the public with respect not on a power trip.

I’d like that too but it’s a pipe dream IMO.

Society has lost respect for one another. That’s not something that can easily be learned back or earned back. We’re more galvanized against one another, especially against those we don’t see eye to eye with.

Unfortunately, I think something nationwide or globally has to happen to force a reset.

Now ask yourself, would it not be better to send more than one officer to scene at 2 o'clock in the morning to go nosing around a person's property where there is abnormal behavior. A rookie cop in this situation is trouble at best and command should be walking the plank for sending one to a call such as this.

This is all to common..... trigger happy police out and about, scared of their own shadow.

It also looks like he wast there alone, before he shot the woman there was clearly another person on the other side of the vehicle and you could hear someone whispering when he was going through the gate.

They sure are highlighting there was a gun inside the house. See kids, have a gun in your home and get shot!

When I hear "health and wellness check" it seems like they should just have gone up to that open door, rang the doorbell and said "hello, police, is everything OK?". But on the other hand, if they were expecting an ambush, that's exactly what the ambushers would want. Wonder what the ratio of "people left door open" vs. "ambushing cops by having a neighbor call them in" is?

Watching the second video, the witness/neighbor is clearly making stuff up. "I don't know what happened inside, but there was no reason for....". Well there ya go, you don't know, but you're going to draw a conclusion anyway? That's call "speculation" I believe.

A few months ago a coworker almost had a similar bad experience. Apparently the cops got a suicide threat call and “pinged” the guys cell phone for location and it came up with his house. Ironically, I think they had the same (common) last name. Well you guessed it, prowling around his house at o’ dark thirty and he almost answered the door with a shotgun but there was just enough light in the side window that he could see what was happening.

This tactic of prowling around people’s homes in the dark, NEEDS TO STOP! In an environment where everyone’s only response to such an event is to call dial a prayer for govt. assistance maybe you can get away with it. With more people realizing the need to secure themselves, acting like a GD burglar is STUPID!

I’ve said before that I understand why I saw (rural) people with big razor wire fences around their homes while looking for property.

So he parks the car on the side, no lights on, does not announce his presence at the door and goes snooping around the outside and sees someone inside. Shouts "show your hands" while outside with a wall and window between. Then takes the shot. I would say that his tactics and command where what lead to the death of the homeowner. He could have fell back into the shadows.

And what would happen if someone lesser citizen were to do this? Rhetorical question. I’ll be surprised if it isn’t declared that he acted properly per procedure.

First time I have seen the camera footage. That is some Bu';';'!!*" Right there!!! You sneak around my house at 2:30 in the morning, shining flashlights in my windows, enter through a secure gate to my backyard and then shoot someone standing in the room. There had better be a damned murder conviction out of this. What the hell would have been so wrong with knocking on the door. Then asking if everyone is ok.

Dad was a lawman for 48 years, 20 of those as High Sheriff.
    Small town, rural country Sheriff.

One time he got called to a fight at a dive bar out in the middle of nowhere. Drunk inside the bar starts shooting at him with a rifle. Dad never took a shot at him, and within 30 minutes had talked the guy into coming out and giving it up.
Another time, he got called to a domestic. Drunk son and father were fighting it out. There were already 4 deputy's and several State Police on the scene since the son was shooting at them from inside the house, smartly..all were taking cover behind their cars.
Dad arrives and within a few minutes walks up to the door, the whole time talking to the son. The son had a 38 special leveled at Dad's chest the whole time. Dad manages to get face to face with the boy, and during a moment when the boy looked away, Dad grabs the revolver from his hand.
But not before the kid gets a shot off and hits Dad in the chest.
The bullet hits Dad's badge and ricochets into his shoulder. At that point the kid had about 8 officers jump on him, but they never shot him.

Dad has dozens of stories like this, and in 48 years...never shot anyone.
Now you tell me...after 48 years of wearing the badge, don't you think that there were many times when Dad would have been absolutely in the right to cap some a--hole who had it coming?

I can't recall all the times I heard my Dad tell his deputies to keep everything and everybody calm.
    And it worked.

Now-a-days, while the police apologist's go on & on about how their training is better than it ever has been, the standard method has become to storm the situation screaming and yelling confusing orders while brandishing hardware with the hammer pulled back and a shaky finger on the trigger.
Wtf? This is considered 'better training'? Swarming in screaming like a bunch of Apache's ramping everything up to eleven on a scale of ten?

How did it come to this? The Police own this crap. They got sold on the citizenry being the enemy and needing to adopt militaristic methods and attitudes.
There are many lawmen who, although get trained in these methods, realize that most of the time it's completely unnecessary and act accordingly.
And God love em for it.

Whats it gonna take to get back to keep everything and everybody calm?
The police and the citizens are just the pawns in this game. The kings and queens in the administrations that insist on using these horrendous methods are the ones who need to be taken to the courthouse square and hung till dead.

Good post. I used to tell rookies all the time. People call you to stabilize a situation, not to add to the confusion. They can freak out fine on their own.

Training needs to change. I'm held accountable for every round fired. Police are not above the law and should be held to a higher level. The officer made himself the threat.

I forget what area of the southwest this sheriff was from but his remarks were "no matter the situation you, another officer or citizen worth protecting had better be bleeding profusely before you use your weapon".

Unfortunate the woman did not call 911 to report a prowler in her yard. As for the door open, perhaps she was expecting a food delivery?

Maybe she was waiting on a friend or family member, maybe it was hot inside, maybe she burned some food and was airing out the house, maybe she just wanted some fresh air. What difference does it make if the door is open or not, strange at 2:30 in the morning, but it ain't worth the police snooping around just because they want to. I know the neighbor called, but at some point the police should tell the neighbor sorry, a open door doesn't warrant us going to snoop and see what might be wrong.

Intro to that video listed two units on scene.
