I think the grip safety primarily stops trigger movement. The thumb safety blocks the sear, IIRC. Series 80 guns added a firing pin block, but this was a Series 70 gun. Series 70 guns are still subject to muzzle down drops on hard surfaces due to firing pin inertia. Can be resolved by lightweight firing pins or heavier firing pin springs.
Had a friend prove the firing pin inertia issue by deliberately dropping a new Colt Commander muzzle down on to concrete, from 3ft, with a primed case. He had more money than sense, but he proved a point. I think he went with a Wilson titanium firing pin after that.
ETA - I forgot about the half-cock notch, which will capture the hammer if it becomes disengaged from the sear, but the trigger was not pulled.
The 1911 is actual a very safe gun with multiple safety features.
