Cutting the cord just got easier - Youtube TV

Well most are unlimited now so that's gotten to be a non issue unless you're traveling. I'm not looking forward to my bill next month when I get back from Spain... And Cuba the next month is REALLY gonna kill me...

The rest of the world charges the caller and the callee gets nothing billed. THAT's what I'm talkin about. I call you for a 15 min convo..I pay...you just talk n hang up. YOU won't be billed.

Another thing...because of that crap?...I can't call you direct without a big surcharge while yer in Cuba.
:)
Think about it... microwave and other communications aren't gunna keep two signals apart, but types of billing will?

Oh. Gotcha. Yeah that makes more sense. Like receiving a text is free vs sending one costs...

I bought the Amazon Fire TV box, not the stick, and a digital antenna. Between Vue and the antenna I get about 75 channels. It was a tough sell for the wife because shes old school and was skeptical about streaming. And with Vue you can stream up to 5 devices.

Out here in the boonies I have slow Windstream internet and it still keeps up with all the devices we have running at the same time.

You don't need a Playstation then, do you?

I've seen it on Roku

You guys sound like a bunch of liberals arguing about healthcare, "it ought to be free", "The whole world has better service than we do".

Hardly a logical comparison but troll away... Let's see, gov subsidized, nationalized "free" heathcare vs end the regulation and the monopoly on internet service options so the market can balance itself as it should... Yeah, your argument holds water...

Here are a couple quick links to get started with Kodi on the Firestick. I may create a new thread in the future.

Installing Kodi:

http://www.wirelesshack.org/how-to-install-kodi-on-the-new-updated-fire-tv-stick.html

No limit build:

http://www.wirelesshack.org/how-to-install-no-limits-magic-build-kodi-16-1-jarvis.html

Be aware that there are 2 versions of the No Limits build, one with and one without XXX content for those of us with kids.

Have you ever installed on an iPad? I have a mini I would like to put Kodi on for my daughter. I'll have to jailbreak it and I'm seeing Evasion as an easy way to do that. Any experience with it?

Anybody else jailbreaking iPads? First time doing it so I've not really looked far into it and don't want to screw things up.

Can't help there. Never been into Apple products.

Curious as well. Recently got an ipad and when I briefly checked on jailbreaking, it seems there was no jailbreak for iOS 10.2

Have rooted every Android phone I've ever had, so I figure following some guide would be pretty easy, but curious to hear from those who've done it.

Chief, worst case, there are people on CL who will jailbreak iphones/ipads for a fee.

Just an update for anybody interested.

I've had two Firesticks since Christmas, but have never messed with Kodi before. I decided to load it onto one of the Firesticks this afternoon.

At the first link above, there's an April '17 update at the top with a video. That's the only thing I used...not the rest of the info or the No Limit Build. It's ~24 min long and it made in real time. Since my internet was faster than hers, I was able to keep up the whole time. It even included a different build. The method in the video uses an app called Downloader instead of ES Explorer.

I loaded it up and tested it by watching the first couple minutes of Guardians Vol 2.

It did use the newer Kodi load (Krypton, IIRC, version 17.something instead of Jarvis 16.1). I really have no idea what all that means, but it worked. I'm not sure what the difference in builds is, so I'll use what I have (I think it was call Spinz something) for the time being.

Can you have two builds on the same device? Or do you load a new one and overwrite the current one?

ETA: just found an app to wipe the old build, and found No Limits for Krypton 17.1, so I'm going to give it a shot

ETA 2: after find a "best Kodi builds for Krypton 17" article, I'm loading CDTV Infusion instead, just to see; never got the "wipe" app to work...just loaded the Infusion, and honestly not sure if Spinz is still there or not

ETA 3: ended up loading the Titanium build instead, and going to give it a shot...tired of messing with this thing and need to use it before making any more changes/updates

Interesting analysis of what channels would cost in a la carte pricing IF the channel wanted to maintain the same revenue figure it has under bundling (may not be realistic that channels could successfully charge these rates, but assumptions have to be made for this analysis).
How much would it cost to get your favorite channels a la carte?
This got a lot more relevant today with the news that Discovery Communications and Scripps Networks are considering a deal.

The days of hundreds of channels in a package are going away and the content producers have to fight both to get their channels into the skinnier packages and also to maintain pricing power. There are many channels that couldn't stand on their own in an a la carte world, and while we're nowhere near a la carte, that's the direction we're heading, so the content that is being produced will increasingly have to demonstrate that it can stand on its own - i.e., are consumers willing to pay for that content as opposed to a large bundle in which that content is an afterthought.

Sign me up! What I would actually watch would cost $15.59 and I would NOT subscribe to the Cooking Channel.

"That's because most people paying for a given channel—say, ESPN—aren't actually watching it, and those people are helping subsidize the cost for those who do."

Who knew the people who brought us Obama Care also bring us cable TV!!!

I had one of those big 8 foot satellites back in the day. You could ala carte those and pick & pay. $1 for this channel, 75 cent for that one & so on.
Somehow I ended up with a Japanese channel. The game shows were awesome! Couldn't understand a word. And this Japanese Julia Child..everything was fish and seaweed. Again, couldn't understand a word.. except she would always say Hai!
The wife would bust out from another room...what the hell are you watching?
That was quality programming right there!

It's not TV service that's lacking(even though it is) it's quality internet that we're short on options...

That's not going to change anytime soon. In the Triangle, there's TimeWarner/Spectrum, AT&T and if you're lucky, Google Fiber.

Oh I know. It's the kind of government regulated, monopolistic activity that's at the crux of our countries' problems...

While I haven't cut the cord yet, I do have 2 TVs that use a Mohu Leaf for local channels and either a Fire stick (with Kodi) or a computer with Kodi installed for watching shows, and am setting up a third with a Roku just to compare. Already have Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts, so we are pretty much covered for our TV watching. As soon as the wife signs off on either the Fire stick or the Roku set up, I will be canceling my DirecTV service.

I ordered an amplified antenna during Prime day and hooked it up to a new 4k tv and I only picked up 7 stations from 2 providers I'm pissed.

Funny part is I hooked it up to an older TV and picked up 18 channels.

I don't own a 4K tv but that is good to know in case I ever do. Wonder if there is some setting on the tv that needs to get changed or if you need a different antenna specifically for a 4K?

Did you use the setup on the 4K tv with the new antenna?

https://www.antennaweb.org/ enter zipcode and you will get map with station locations to help aim the antenna.

The higher the antenna the better your reception will be.

You may have to aim the antenna to receive more stations, I have an older tv antenna in the garage attic
and added a second smaller one with combiner and amplifier to get more stations.

I have at&t giga fiber and got DirectTV Now and dumped TWC.

Answered in first paragraph of the linked article.
I must be dense because that first paragraph told be absolutely nothing useful. But.. it's available in Charlotte, it's $35 a month and it has unlimited cloud DVR... I'm going to find out more.

I was going to say that but didn't want to get into a fight.

I did all of that and the antenna is mounted in the attic of a house on the top of a big hill. There shouldn't be an issue.

How do you like the Directv now, It has the networks right?

She is actually onboard with the idea but wants to make sure she understands how to use the Fire stick/Roku first. I am leaning towards the FS because it is cheaper and I can install Kodi on it.

No fight necessary. But not sure where the confusion is coming from.

YouTube TV, Google’s entry in the crowded market of live TV streaming services, is now available in ten more U.S. metros, the company announced this morning. In nine of the ten markets, the service will include the live local feeds from all four major broadcasters – ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC. The ability to watch live television from major broadcasters has been one of YouTube TV’s differentiated features since its debut, as it chose to go forgo nationwide availability in favor of a promise to deliver broadcast channels in the markets it serves.

They are negotiating deals for live local broadcasts, so they couldn't launch nationwide, and instead they'll add cities as they negotiate these deals.

Now that they have 15 cities set up, and have presumably worked out a lot of the kinks on these deals, it should be pretty easy to rapidly expand. And fortunately, all the streaming-over-the-internet TV services are no-contract, so it's easy enough to sign up with one of the others and switch whenever Youtube TV comes to your area, if YT is the one you're most interested in.

So how close to charlotte do you have to be? City limits? County? X miles?

What about outside the area, can you get it and just watch charlotte local stations?

Dunno, but it might be based on the zipcodes the local ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC affiliates broadcast to. There's probably a place on the Youtube TV site to enter your zipcode as that's probably how they'll determine whether you can sign up.

I saw that but that how you get spam so I didn't give the my e-mail.

So I was right... I am dense! And there's a whole lot to the business of television broadcasting that I don't want to know.

I still don't understand why they would limit their rollout markets so they can include something people can get for free and probably don't watch anyhow. It's all about your address and not your location. If you live in the right area you can sign up for the service and watch it anywhere you happen to be.

Multiple email addresses is the commonly used solution for this issue. I have an email address that I use for online purchases, services, etc. And I don't mix this with my personal email address. Also, gmail is pretty good about categorizing email into primary, social media, subscription and spam buckets.

In Raleigh I get ABC as my network, depending on your location you may have more if the network owns the station.

What make / model antenna did you purchase?
