Dec/Jan 2022 22Lr rimfire 50 yd Challenge

Hopefully getting out there early this week to shoot 75 yards, while the sun is warming up this old body. Same gun and ammo, but may try shooting steel targets at 200 and 300 yds. Also, testing out a new build with CZ MTR action.

I will shoot it mid January. It will be 100 yards. Range has stationary target stands. 50 (it's actually 52 yards some one did not know how to measure) and 100 yards. If I remember correctly Eley Target was a 9 inch drop at 100 yards and I do not recall what black box was. It will be a fun time though.

Also by then hopefully more people will partake.

Looks like it will be warm enough to get out to the range tomorrow. Trying to beat the weekend crowd at Caswell Shooting Range. I will post results.

I'm hoping to make it out. Weather, work, holidays, and guests all sucking up my time. Santa did bring me some Eley Tenex though, so naturally I have to run it through the CZ and Volquartsen to see if they like it.

Just curious, when I first joined this site we had a shooter who shot 3 different Rifles. Old man hub, was his thread name. Anybody know anything about him.

oldemanhub was near Hickory, last post in 2018 was selling off a number of cowboy guns because of health. he withdrew the remaining listings dated Jun 2018

The NCWRC range in Caswell was very active today, but managed to get some shots down range, between the M1 smoking my view to my left and AR blasting away to my right. I focused on getting the CZ 457 MTR that is in a new MDT chassis with a different scope, on paper and dialed in. The result was good. Shot 2 golf targets with a mag change, then accidently shot a 19th hole. Lots of fun. I will try to get back on a quiet day to shoot 75 yards.

Great shooting! Jealous of that scope. Looks like we have 3 perfect scores so far. None have posted from 75 yards though.

Just realized I could illuminate the reticle on that scope. It will help at 75 yards. Black reticle on black target spot is tough on my eyes. I did not want to alter the target by painting the circle yellow, but I thought about it.

Will shoot at 100 yards in the next few weeks. The range by me was way to busy today. There were people waiting to shoot on all ranges. Which is the first time I have ever seen that where I shoot. Did shoot 4 rounds of skeet though. Normally skeet is only Wed. & Sundays, so there were not to many people which was nice.

How well does the suppression box work?

Well, better than nothing, definitely pushes the sound forward. It allows people to shoot high powered rifles relatively close together. The benches are connected and you still get vibration. It is a test of your ability to concentrate and time your shots between the higher caliber rounds. They don't stop the smoke screen.

To their credit, they added metal screens between lanes to block most shell casings. The benches are new and have adjustable seats. Nice improvements.

Well I made it to the Range today, the last day of this Rimfire Challenge and the last day of 2022. Happy New Year to everyone.
I wanted to go Friday but my Wife had some pressing matters so it was today. Shooting conditions were less than perfect and went downhill quickly. I shot 2 of my Golf Targets and missed a hole about halfway through on both of them. As they say Third Time is the Charm. I got a perfect score (9) on this target. So I moved another target out to 75 yards as the weather conditions deteriorated with moderate rain, medium fog and a slight breeze. Got back on my Rifle and realized that it was hard to see the golf holes and my bullet holes and even with some protection over my target stand, my target was getting wet. I decided to shoot one shot at each hole, yes I know the course was a par 3 but it seemed like a waste of time, so I shot 9 shots and hit 5 holes. Congratulations to who ever wins this round!1231221122.jpg

Very good shooting in tough conditions. I think this challenge runs through the end of January. If so, there is still time to shoot 75 yards again. That is what I plan to do when I get back from FL.

I thought it ended this month. I have been recovering from Covid and didn't think I would have time to try again. I know admin decided to have the 75 yard tie breaker and I thought it was going to be one target and done. Any clarification on this?

I also found out that the illumination helps in the rain and fog at 75 yards.

The thread title is December/January rimfire 50 yard challenge. January didn't even happen yet.

We will hear from Amps 13 to verify. Pretty sure we can shoot in January.

Yes, as @Timfoilhat stated it is all of January too. I believe that 1 shot at each hole from 75 yards is really the way to go For those with perfect scores at 50 yards. Saves ammo and really will test our best shooters.
still plenty of time to get in targets. I plan on trying again.
Happy New Years Eve! Be safe tonight everyone and have a great New Year!

Hope to get out soon to shoot 75 yards. Not feeling well. Had to withdraw from NRL 22 match. Disappointed that I didn't make it. FYI just ordered SK Long Range ammo from Whidden Gunworks in GA. They just got a shipment in.

Hope you make it out. I know how it feels, I was out for almost a month. I am feeling normal now and was planning on shooting Tuesday, the 17th, but the weather might not cooperate.

I made it to the Range today, 1-20-23, the conditions were perfect except for variable wind. Warmed up some at 50 yards then placed a target at 75 and started shooting. I was just wanting to see if I could do better than the 5 I scored earlier in bad conditions. I shot 3 targets and none of them outscored my 5. I tied it once and got a 4 on the second attempt and got off to a miserable start on the 3rd, so I just quit. May have to start looking for some ammo that performs better at longer ranges.
I did play around with my 10/22 and my M77-22 at shorter distances, so the day wasn't a total waste.

Tough conditions today. Still you are at 5 and no others posting, like me. I will be out before the end of the month. FYI Whidden Gunworks in GA has SK Ammo in stock.

I saw were you had mentioned that before. I have never dealt with them before. I hear the SK Long Range is pretty good. After my results today at 75 I might have to look into it. I haven't shot much at 75 yards ( at least on paper) so I was disappointed with my results.

This was the first time I ordered from them. Shipped quickly. Flat rate shipping was expensive, so you have to order enough to make it worth while. Carolina Guns and Gear range is going to stock some Wolf Match pretty soon.

I second whidden gunworks. Fast shipping!

It is not looking good for me getting out there. So yes your 5 is looking great! Should of done it this past Wed. The weather was great. I shot skeet, but did not bring my rifle with me.

Well. I tried, but.
The daggone wind was gusting down the CGG 50-yard lane left to right, then right to left, I had to take my Surefire can off the CZ455, just so I could hole more than 3 holes, and my action screws were loose. That is it for my excuses. I did ok, for me. Once I torque my bedding screws down with some blue loctite, I'll resupply my SK Flat Point ammo and try again.
I suspect I will need more than the 18x Meopta to do acceptably at 100 yards, but if so, I can stick its big brother on the CZ and see if I can do an adequate job.
The suppressor impact shift surprised me, but I have only shot steel targets with it screwed on, and it did ok offhand. The bench told the rest of the story.
This was fun. Thanks for the challenge!

This target is surprising a lot of shooters, including me. This wind thing is a curve that I haven't learned yet as I have only been shooting outside competitively for about 2 years.
I haven't heard of the SK Flat point ammo. It must be pretty good if you have that much faith in it. Where are you getting it?

Blue Collar Reloading in Salisbury usually has some.

I was able to get out this afternoon to the Caswell Shooting Range and got the CZ457 MTR on target at 75 yds. Only got 6 of 9 in the hole. Two were just a little off. They have their own 50 yd challenge going. 5 shots on the bench with one point supported, then 5 shots unsupported. I shot 75 out of 100. That was the high score for the day. I can do better. Need to remove some weight off the front next time.

Great shooting! I believe this nudges you into the lead. The cold weather and rain has definitely made it hard to get out.

That was great shooting on both events, congratulations. I gave it my best shot.

Aren't we suppose to shoot this target like playing golf? You shoot the target until you hit the hole. I am confused. Yes I am old.

Checked with Blue Collar Reloading on their website. They don't show it. I am interested in trying it but I am now wanting something for 75 to 100 yard range.
With blue collar, you might want to use the email feature on their web site, and ask them what SK and Wolf ammo that they have in stock. They usually give an answer the next day. The sight rarely shows ammo or primer availability. If they have any, they will tell you.

The 50 yard challenge is shoot until you hit the hole. For those with perfect scores of 9, they move the target to 75 yards as a tie breaker. One shot at each hole. The score is how many hits out of 9 shots. As far as ammo for 100 yards, try SK Long Range. Slightly higher velocity in higher quality ammo. Whidden Gunworks has it and ships quickly. Target Sports has Wolf Match and CGG Range in Asheboro is getting some Wolf Match in soon. Wolf Match is made by Eley. E stamped on the brass.

I believe we had a 3 shot maximum for each hole whether you hit the hole or not. This was to save ammo and keep me from from embarrassing myself too much. You are correct on the 75 yard target though. 1 shot per hole.
