Don't tell me to, "Just go to Lowe's."

It kind of started with hurricane Florence, but mostly it was poor planning and research on our parts.

My neighborhood is made up of mostly half to one acre lots. There are five other lots that border mine.

Hurricane Florence pushed three of the trees backwards. They were the ones directly behind our 12x16 outbuilding. The rain from that storm was running off the roof and concentrated on the bases of the those trees. Then the constant winds pushed them backwards. Luckily, they didn't fall, but I felt they eventually would. Also, it really opened my eyes to the root system.

The roots were huge, but more concerning was how far from the tree they had spread. Being that the trees (42 in all) were so big, some leaning, some with huge dead spots, but all having roots running who knows where, I was afeered they might (if they haven't already) find someone's septic tank, mine included.

We removed the east trees and planted tea olives. We removed the south trees and went with a wooden privacy fence. This was a couple years back.

Now that I'm not working, I'm removing the west trees and will plant tea olives in their place.
The way you spelled that out allowed my elementary mind to understand completely.

You are a man among men who figuratively stands head and shoulders above everyone else.

Nice, you’ll have mason bees in it first. Then probably yellow jackets. Just don’t burn the house down trying to kill the yellow jackets.

You ARE the master of your domain, and all that you can see, as far as the eye can see.

There are jobs you will have “people” for, jobs you might choose to do yourself, and jobs you choose to completely ignore.

Until your spouse pesters the snot out of you.

"Master of your domain" lol. All I think about when I hear that is the Seinfeld episode 'The Contest': About 40 sec in...

So you made a woodpile? I feel like I spent half my childhood making those.

Here's a decent example.

I need to pull up a gardenia before moving my chicken coop, and I'm clearing some dirt from around it.

I found this root.

The back edge of the coop is over 12ft from the center of the treeline, and you can see how thick the root is, even at that distance.
