Now that most of my trees are gone, the area behind my shop is exposed. That's not a huge deal, but I have a bit of crap stashed back there (looks bad) and during shop/yard get-togethers, guests usually whiz back there vs stumbling to the house to use the bathroom.

I called the group that put up my privacy fence a couple years back to see if they can stop in one day and throw up one white vinyl panel. Figured the one neighbor that can see back there would appreciate it.

The guy on the phone asked, "One panel?" I told him yeah. I figured they would be in and out in 15 to 30 minutes, then be on their way.

"Just got to Lowe's. That's all you need."

Because my time is worth nothing now, but I have gobs of material, I decided to take a different approach. Oh, not to mention the nearest Lowe's is a half hour away.

I'll make something using these pieces of Cypress trees.

Put a few pieces down.

Figured I would use a couple of logs to support the pieces as I stack them.

I cut two pieces to 7.5ft long. I then rode my post hole diggers to 1.5ft down. The hole was about 6" in diameter, but so were the larger end of the logs.

Since I couldn't get the log started, even after shaving the diameter of the hole, I decided to peel away the bark, up to the 18" mark. After doing that, and seeing how easily the bark peeled away, I decided to peel the entire log. Spoiler alert: Wifey loved the look!

Peeling the log.

Installed that one, and began peeling the other.

Let the stacking commence!

Almost finished, but ran out of the tiny limbs and daylight (and stamina). I'll finish up tomorrow.

My wife thinks it's cooler'n hell.

I am pleased with the results, and if you would like something like this erected on your property, the answer is no.

Just go to Lowe's.

That works! Looks good! The dudes will appreciate the pee screen. Nothing like whizzin outside!

Now if you just poured blue epoxy resin in the voids……. It would be worth at least $1M.

Did this take longer than the 15 to 30 minutes for putting up a panel and the hour round trip to lowes? Asking for a friend.

I does look really good

I’d burn that pile in a night. Then what you gonna do Lowe’s guy? 😆

we did this one time by our garage. Ended up getting termites in the wood, and then in the walls of the garage

It's not going to be permanent, but I appreciate the input.

Side note; Our "termite guy" lives about 200 yards from us, as the crow flies.

I said my time is worth nothing now.

My barometer for whether I do it myself or pay someone is usually that I figure my time is worth about $50 / hour. There are other factors involved such as would my time be better spent going for a motorcycle ride or maybe going fishing. But $50 / hour is my number. Been the same going back to when I was working.

I was being facetious, but I suspect you knew that.

Until I die, I have nothing but time.

In my opinion, if they charged me a couple hundred bucks to run out here, throw up a panel, then leave, it would be worth it.

Since I was pretty much dissed, the look on my wife's face when she saw what i "created", more than made up for my zero dollars per hour for my labor.

You ARE the master of your domain, and all that you can see, as far as the eye can see.

There are jobs you will have “people” for, jobs you might choose to do yourself, and jobs you choose to completely ignore.

Until your spouse pesters the snot out of you.

hit it with bug genocide spray once in the spring and you'll be fine.
nobody likes finding a brown recluse or black widow when they're trying to pee. why they were sticking it IN the wood is a different question, but i suppose alcohol is going to be a factor.

dilute bifen or cyflutrhrin
I dunno, i tend to spray the brick around my house, thresholds, and all my pipe holes with bifen once or twice a year. we had a lot more bugs through the house before i started doing that. after i started doing it was had a good few dead bugs near entries. there was an orb spider in my spray path outside once. didn't last long.

"Termite proof", but the buckets need to be turned over, otherwise they will fill up with water and the mosquitos will prevent anyone from being in the yard.
Good thinking. Now he can get some passive income generating too.

Someone said it up thread but it would look crazy cool if you temporarily put up plywood and poured resin to cover the holes.

I’m still confused why all the trees had to come down.

It kind of started with hurricane Florence, but mostly it was poor planning and research on our parts.

My neighborhood is made up of mostly half to one acre lots. There are five other lots that border mine.

Hurricane Florence pushed three of the trees backwards. They were the ones directly behind our 12x16 outbuilding. The rain from that storm was running off the roof and concentrated on the bases of the those trees. Then the constant winds pushed them backwards. Luckily, they didn't fall, but I felt they eventually would. Also, it really opened my eyes to the root system.

The roots were huge, but more concerning was how far from the tree they had spread. Being that the trees (42 in all) were so big, some leaning, some with huge dead spots, but all having roots running who knows where, I was afeered they might (if they haven't already) find someone's septic tank, mine included.

We removed the east trees and planted tea olives. We removed the south trees and went with a wooden privacy fence. This was a couple years back.

Now that I'm not working, I'm removing the west trees and will plant tea olives in their place.
