I closed out my Facebook account a couple of years ago due to them perpetually creeping me out with “you might know so 'n so”, and Zuckerburg in general. Not to mention enjoying at least some very minor level of anonymity on the web since there is only one person on the entire worldwide web born in the twentieth century with my first and last name.

The down side is I can barely access Marketplace anymore to look at used cars and motorcycles, and even when I can I can’t contact the seller since I no longer have an account.

Are there any workarounds that you cyber yahoos, I mean, gurus :p can suggest? Thanks in advance

Edit: I used to be able to easily get on marketplace, but now if I google “facebook marketplace harley davidson” or anything similar I only get the FB log in page. I’ve cleared my history and still no love.

Edit deaux: turned on my VPN and still only accessing the log in page to FB

Been FB free since 2014, but I'm curious what the sign up requirements are these days? I mean, what all do they ask for and what kind of certification is there?

Meaning, do you have to be you to have an account?

You may already know this, but it used to be you could “turn your account off” so it wasn’t out there for anyone to view, but if you logged back in it was still there and would re-appear.

I got so peeved about their other shenanigans in the news a few years ago that I went through the new process of actually shutting it down (to the extent that you can, anyway) which takes about a month before they actually turn it off so you can no longer log in.

I’d also be interested in some alternate ID solutions.

I deleted my FB account a few years ago but found I needed to use market place so I created a bogus account for the sole purpose of using marketplace. You can either use a free mail service - so it's not tied to YOUR email address - or one of the temp email services (you get a bogus email address that can send and receive email as long as that tab is open).

Be warned. Market place users make the Craigslist users look like Rhodes scholars.

I did this, too. I have no friends or contacts list. I ignore any requests. I just look at Marketplace.

Tagged. FB Marketplace is the best place to shop for local used stuff. It replaced Auto Trader, Craigslist, etc. The selection and traffic is multiple times any other.

I dumped my FB account when the election was stolen. Well it's still there, I just downloaded all my content and never went back. Since then I have logged in twice, only to use FBM. I don't like logging in, it feels like entering a porno shop or crack house with cameras everywhere.

ETA:
Allow me to clarify that last sentence, lol: I don't like logging in, it feels like what I imagine entering a porno shop or crack house would but with cameras everywhere.

I'd love to find a way to use FBM without FB.

If you are using a different name do you ever get any pushback from sellers if your contact info, or name on your payment method doesn’t match your FB “handle”?

I’d be shopping vehicles and don’t want to spook a seller right off the get-go if it comes to me coming to look at something they have for sale, or even purchasing.

Nope, and I primarily sell on MP. When they show up I introduce myself with my real name and explain that I don't do FB but needed a way to sell on MP. So far no one has even raised an eyebrow. One lady even said "Oh yeah, my FB profile is totally bogus too."

Hate to break it too you, but unless you actually delete it, all those cameras are still watching you anyway...

Meh. Even if you delete it. They are still watching lol.

They have less to tie it back too, but yea. I like Mozilla Firefox, they have a "Facebook Container" that helps sandbox some of FB's crap. Imperfect but better than nothing.

So, is there a way to block all the errant stuff the Zuckerberg’s creation sees fit to post in “my” feed? Errant sloths high fiving their rescuers, deer in the highlights, other random stuff?

I joined one closed vintage motorcycle group, made no posts, and FB is loading all kinds of random stuff to my “feed”.

You can join other groups that you have some interest in so your feed isn't so cluttered with what "they" want you to see. For example I also joined a few Davie county crime watch type pages. I follow SV Seeker (the guy who built a 70 some odd foot steel motor sail boat in his front yard in Tulsa - which is now in the water). But I still get their recommended crap.

Just keep your head down while you're infiltrating their bastion of "safe speech".

I had messaged a bike shop on FB today. I received a reply and got a message from Facebook that all messaging will be moving to the FB Messenger app. There is no way I am downloading Zukerturd’s app onto my phone.

Fella I knew tried to set up an account for marketplace, he said they requred a pic of a driver license or other photo id to activate the account. Any truth to that?

I'm with you on the app, no way.

I set up the account two days ago with nothing but a name and an email address.

@hp468 I was just poking around FB and there IS an identity confirmation protocol including IDs that is required for certain other activities. Perhaps buying or selling. I won’t be doing those though since I didn’t register under my correct name.

You can access the Messenger function on your laptop, no need for it on your phone.

I tried not using Facebook. I went around town talking to people about my trips, kids, lost dogs, my political views, and food. I only got three followers. Two cops and a man in a white coat carrying a straight jacket.
That man in white isn't just following you on there. 😁

I've been off fb since 1975 and haven't missed it one bit.

1975?
Al Gore didn’t invent the internet till many years later.

Is there any way to save a search in FB marketplace? I’m not seeing the option.

I typically save the searches on the other sites

... just like I did for Foxbody Mustang notchbacks a few years ago, and when I went with no notifications for a year or more I realized I might need to change my search criteria. 😒

Is marketplace full of scammers?

Never been on there until reading this thread and some seem like BS!
My only beef thus far is that sellers don’t reply. I think they post stuff for sale without serious intent of actual sail/sell/cell/sale.

And woefully inadequate descriptions of the item for sale.

Like a gorgeous custom 1978 Harley. The description read, “Nice bike."

yep...scammers / shammers, fake "stock pictures" or used equipment / car dealers "cloned" pictures.
fake contact nfo,, fake emails, was looking for a riding lawn mower, there was like 6 with the same
pic, selling for my Aunt, Uncle, Grandmother, Grandfather, you get the picture..email addresses that
ended in gmail, com, qmail.com, etc they all were fake, did some seaching with some tools...called
them out for things to Fecebook..took for ever. Looked for Ford trucks, generators. Same thing. It
appears that Fecebook, Market Place, requires a Fecebook account now. Only reason I use Fecesbook
is for Vintage stereo equipment, Reel-to-Reels, Reloading / Gun groups...that's it. must of pissed them
off 4 weeks ago, couldn't do anything, haven't checked yet, bet the guy who had a Ransom Rest is pissed
at me also. nothing worked PM...etc.

As a general rule of thumb, if it's too good of a deal then it's a scam. If it's a good deal and the seller is on vacation, it's a scam. If the seller is selling for someone else and you should contact the actual seller via this Gmail account, it's a scam.

Look at the sellers other items for sale. If the same too good to be true item is for sale all over the country, it's a scam.

Don't bother reporting it, FB DGAF.

Use common sense, don't let greed cloud your judgement

And, yes. As I said many posts above, FB sellers are a special kind of unicorn rainbow crapping stupid. Knuckle dragging sloped foreheaded unibrow having stupid.

My bike was listed by the sellers friend as he didn't do fb, almost didn't contact him as i thought for sure it was a scam.

Turned out we were both paranoid of being scammed
