Favorite breakfast joints

I thought you retired.

Seriously. I am not there yet, but I thought the retired guy schedule was breakfast at 10-11, maybe a little chore, shooting or tinkering afterwards, skip lunch or grab a beer and some jerky, then the early bird supper at Cracker Barrel around 4:30. Then several bourbons in evening while bitching about Millennials on CFF. Do I need to change my expectations?

With the exception of going anywhere at all in Woke county after 3PM, you are spot on.

I like a great big breakfast, served late in the morning that pretty much covers me till the wife gets home in the early evening, then we might have a chicken salad sandwich.

Then drink beer and resist the urge to yell at idiots on the internet.

Edit: and naps, don’t forget the naps. Whenever you so desire.

Well that sucks. I am resisting that urge now. I was kinda hoping to unleash it down the road. Guess I should just start another bad habit then.

Sounds good to me 👍

We’ve come to be fond of The Egg in Davidson. Good food, big portions.

My other fave’s are that we’ve eaten at in our travels:

Penny’s Diner in Green River, WY.
HUGE breakfasts and a favorite of the local railroad

Millstone in Rapid City, SD
Genuine NC sweet tea in the Middle of SD!

Old Tymers Cafe, Red River, NM
Pancakes the size of hubcaps!

The Local Market, in the tiny town I live in. I walk in and 5 minutes later leave with a liver mush and egg on white bread with mayonnaise, 6 Texas Taters and a Sundrop. Any place that don’t serve liver mush is pretending when it comes to a real breakfast.

Jimmy Dean sausage, egg and cheese croissant wrapped in paper towel nuked for 2 minutes. Either finish with a little spicy mayo or grape jelly but not both. But I only ever get about half cause my pup Lucie has to have her share without spicy mayo or grape jelly on her half. When I was running furniture out to Tennessee and Kentucky I would plan my trip so I could get by the shoneys breakfast buffet in whythville va right when it opened

No we need to hang out!

The Diner in downtown Smithfield NC. And another nod to Angie's in Garner. If you want to immerse into a wretched hive of scum and villainy (politicians) along with a great breakfast, then Big Ed's in the City Market downtown Raleigh is great. There's a little place at Capital Blvd/Atlantic Avenue Watkins Grill that's very good.

This is my list as well… the original Big Ed’s City Market is may go to, then Watkins on Atlantic, then Angie’s since the Toot n Tell closed… I rarely do breakfast unless it’s for dinner/supper though.

Couple places outside Raleigh off the top of my head… Early Girl in Asheville and the Hillbilly Grill in West Jefferson… and La Bodega in Richmond is righteous if you are up that way.

In Greenville NC
First Watch
Egg Yolke
Bagelmans

The omelet and croissant here is great.

Wife loves going out for breakfast.
I hate it. Leave the house, wait in line, eat, get annoyed, and pay for it. Then day is 1/2 shot. nope, I'll pass.
I eat at home 99% of the time. In the rare instances I have breakfast out, it's drive thru McD's.

That tells me you're not going early enough.

that tells ME she's doing the cooking ;)

Went to Jakes Diner in Greensboro yesterday morning
Sausage gravy was really good
Pancakes...eh, decent at best. Coat them things in syrup to get em down, very dry.

Now, not what this thread is about, but I gotta say it
We originally tried to eat at a 'hip' new spot in Greensboro (and they're about to put one in in WS) called Scrambled, on Spring Garden.
It was 9:37, they were busy. Was told that it'd be about 25-40 minute wait...ok. Can we eat on the patio? It only had one customer out when we were walking in
"Oh, sorry, that doesnt open till 10..."
Ok, maybe I was mistaken, maybe it was someone on break
We walk outside while we wait to see them seating someone on the patio. Im out.
As we walk by we see that there's another table that's been seated out there and a THIRD table which has the 'finished' plates of a few cusotmers.

F that noise.

For those of you who fondly recall the tiny little hole in the wall breakfast joint on Mainstreet in Blowing Rock named “Sonny’s” for the owner (and served liver mush (@SimpleMan)), I was thrilled to learn his cook, Tim, from 1979-1995, is still cooking in Blowing Rock at a nice new place where Knights on Main was. It’s called Social on Main now, and been beautifully remodeled, like the rest of Blowing Rock these days. He runs the place. GREAT breakfast, and lunch. Closed on Wednesdays.

Sonny opened in 1954 and cooked till he died in 1999. Tim went on to run Knights of Main down the street, and more recently Sunny Rock, next to Foggy Rock. Then that owner decided to retire. And Social on Main opened this past December.

By the way, for you liver mush/pudding aficionados (like me), Tim told me that his Neese's guy said liver mush and liver pudding are the same thing. Just packaged different for different regions.

Not familiar with the old one you mentioned (we always eat lunch or dinner up there; usually Speckled Trout or the old Woodlands) but I might have to try Social on Main someday soon. Would be the start of a good mountain getaway day. 👍

I’m still looking for a great place in Wilmington. Saw Mill is hit or miss. Jimbos is same. Eggs up has great grits but everything else sucks.
There's several places around.

We've had good luck at Dixie Grill in downtown:
https://dixiegrillwilmington.com/ BUT -- you have to get there early if you expect to be seated in a reasonable timeframe.
Further out, in Carolina Beach is:
Gulfstream; they do a pretty good breakfast -- https://gulfstreamrestaurantnc.com/

And of course, Kate's Pancake House -- Been around forever, and she's pro-gun, just check the sign in the door.

Same as with Dixie Grill, you have to get there early or you won't get in.

This is the place next to Redix at Wrightsville Beach, always wanted to try but could never seem to get there, may be new ownership now:

Most of the old places are gone now. I-40 was the worst thing to ever happen to Wilmington.

Flipping back out to the WEST --

If you are out in the boonies near Troy/UREs looking for breakfast, the Eldorado Outpost serves up a fabulous greasy-spoon breakfast --
https://maps.app.goo.gl/raiJH5afAZWZZ6537 AND -- They have legit Cheerwine Slushies! :p

Pic of the aforementioned Cheerwine Slushie Dispenser of Goodness:
