Like most of us, I'm always looking for a reason to try out some new toy. Our new puppy has us outside at night more than usual. Looking for a new walking the dog light. This is def not a "if your life depends on it" light - just need something to make sure me or the wife don't break our necks on a step at night. Currently rocking one of those Coast "1000 lumen" 3x D battery lights from Lowes. And it's prob not worth replacing the batteries in.

Must haves:
Rechargeable
Small(ish)
Easy controls for the wife and kid.

Let me know what you got. Not afraid of Chinese if it'll last a few yrs.

I've got 2 olights. 1 is about a year old the other about 9 months old. I switch back and forth but 1 of the 2 get carried daily.

rechargeable anythings?
AAA, 18650, etc?
easy controls...like on/off only?
tail switch or slide?

since i am a miser,
this is good enough
for walking our dogs at night.
fill with AAA rechargeables.

I bought several of these 6 months ago and am impressed. I recently picked up a couple of their headlamps and one of the larger 8000 lumen lights. I keep a Protac by the bed and in my truck but these cheaper lights have been great for the use you mention, taking the dogs out at night. They make the same light with a tail switch as well.

Walking the dog in backyard or urban area or rural?

I have a few of these, and I'd be happier than a pig in shit if they would get rid of the slide forward/back zoom and just change it to a twist. Damn thing never stays where you need it to, but otherwise, I've beat the crap out of those things without issue.

Rural area.

Don't care what kind of rechargeable battery it has. Easy controls - meaning I don't need 45 modes and strobe. Would like to be able to set a brightness and just turn on/off without having to cycle through all the modes.

Stream light microstream. Use it every day mostly clipped on the bill of my hat.

Edited to add: not crazy bright but more than enough for walking the dog. I was surprised at the light it put out when I first got one.

I carry one of these daily and have a back up usually around somewhere too.
Battery life is great and it charges up fast. Brightness and lumen output is very good for the size.

Small enough and lightweight to have in my pocket for edc and I hardly notice it.

Also keep a few Streamlight HL versions that put out 500 and 1k lumens. Those are nice when you need them.

Fenix has been on my to get list, I've read and heard really good reviews on them.

I recently picked up a Streamlight Stinger 2020. A side and tail power switch, and a brightness switch to choose low, med or high. I'm really pleased with it.
2K lumens, it has two 18650 batteries that are rechargeable individually, or you can put the light in the supplied charging cradle. It also works in the old stinger cradles.

For some reason the Amazon link will not post below, I'm just seeing a blank space. Go to Amazon, paste in the search bar

Olight i5R EOS would be my suggestion...buy a bunch and just leave them everywhere.

It sounds like you are looking for more of what I'd call a "door light"... Something that spends it's time by the door.

I have a few Olight Seeker 3s that serve those roles, the switch takes a minute to understand how the dial changes the brightness, but you can set and forget it.

I'd also consider the Streamlight Protak HL5x, uses USB rechargeable batteries and it's pretty simple to operate.
Plus it's bombproof... I've used mine working consistent night shifts for years

Streamlight Macrostream USB. It’s a great pocket light and I have used the same one since they came out. It’s a big larger than the microstream but it’s also brighter. I have an Olight S30R baton 3 and it’s wonderful but they don’t make it anymore. I also have an olight I5r that is fine but not my first grab light.

Also Streamlight customer service is on par with Glock in my opinion. I had a tail cap switch go bad on a microstream duriCovid. I called them to order the part and they sent me a whole new light for free. I got another package about 3 months later with the tail cap and a new battery for my one that was messed up with a note saying they apologized for not having parts available when I called and to please enjoy the second light. So I say they did me right.

You can order direct from Coast and they have smallish USB rechargeable lights that come with the battery. You do have to take the battery out and plug it in however. Home Depot and Lowes has had them in the past as well.

I like our Streamlight Dualie for such uses. I keep one in the charger on my nightstand for getting around during a power outage. It has spot and flood lights built into it, and isn't so bright that it blinds you to everything outside of its throw area. It's a good, manageable size, but not EDC-small. They can be had for around $60.00.

That said, I keep a rechargable Microstream in my pocket at all times, and have spares stashed all over the place. It would probably do the job. I need to try a Macrostream.

I have a warrior pro x that I use for rural outdoor activities.

although if I bought now I would rather skip anything from china.

I have a microstream, a wedge, 2 or 3 polytacs, and a protac HLX. For me, it's really hard to beat the value of stream light. Mine have been carried daily, dropped in all manner of mess, washed in the washing machine, and are still kicking.

The only one I'm not 100% satisfied with is the wedge. The activation is just really goofy. Still a great light, but really needs a gen 2.

Have to add to the streamlight recommendations. Have had the protac xl USB rechargeable version for a couple of years and it has proven itself solid; so far no problems. Not as cheap as some but seems to fit the quality/price balance. Planning to add another and alternate sizes of the streamlight brand.

Piling on with Streamlight. I've had great support from them in the past with older lights, and I keep a couple around the house for "everyday" use. The Pro-Tac line are a good size with an easy interface and good enough throw.

My Streamlight Macrostream usb stopped working today. Gonna give them a call to discuss it. I may start to look at replacing it. I think it’s the tail switch gone bad.

Coast Polysteel 600R rechargeable 530 lumins. Comes with rechargeable lithium battery and traditional AAA battery holder. It is super bright and has three power settings. Got them from Amazon

I had one go bad. Sent it back and they sent me a new one within like a week.

There’s also switches on Amazon. But I’d go on their website and get return info.

Streamlight microstream, have had, 8 years? used daily, gift them to people without, too handy, pretty bright for their size til the lense gets beat, still ok. Only problem, oxidation between tailcap and body make it intermittent, clean about once a year.

Had a small Fenix, nice, but didn't play well with light diesel exposure, rubber switches swelled.

For lighting up a walk, you really can’t beat a headlamp.
My second choice would be a right angle light I could clip on my shirt/jacket.

My Zebra Lights are my go to. They are built like a tank, easy enough user interface, and the get bright as heck. They also have a very dim moonlight which I use just as much as the bright setting. Partially American made and built extremely tough. Good amount of flood and throw. Their right angle lights make great headlamps, they are very popular amongst cavers.

My sc700d gets used the most, especially hunting. I've got a few spare 21700 batteries, it's ready for a prolonged power outage.

Got this nitecore picked out for public land walk outs after hunting.

Decent lumens, 21700 battery which equals awesome run time without the extra (unneeded) illumination.

I hear you on walking out of the woods after dark. The 40 acre parcel of land I used to hunt on was a "black hole" when the sun went down. I switched from an old Surefire 300 lumen light to a conservatively rated 800 lumen Surefire which was closer to 1000 lumen in reality. More like a car high beam. Made all the difference in the world. Often saw coyotes on this land so a side arm and a good light were very reassuring.

I have 5 of them and the wife has two. Great for walking the dog, hunting and fishing.

Some spots of the national forest we hunt take an hour or more to walk out of. Believe me it’s dark-dark when we get to the truck. And that’s if we’re empty handed. If we have to clean a deer and run to the truck or midway point for the cart all you can think about is the light dying. We use streamlight headlamps for walking in but they eat up aaa batteries. I hoping this nitecore does what I want. Ended up ordering it last night.

Anyone use a Fenix Pd25r?

Olight is supposed to have a new one come out that will go to 600 meters.

The warrior x model. Just over $100.
