Since the real stuff seems to be out of stock every time I look, is there a good substitute out there?

Have you used goon tape before? I wrapped a bunch of mags with it and it left gnarly ass sticky shit all over my mags when I removed it. FYI.

Seen people using this type of tape lately

It's just hockey stick tape marked up and sold to tacti-cool kids.

Here ya go:

Their logo is basically the NHL shield and they use an old-school goalie mask in their marketing.

I thought the whole point of Goon Tape was to be non-residue! Oh well, I have plain old grip tape, just not in cool camo colors. 🤷‍♂️

go to that hockey store link I posted and pick up some stretch tape. Or get the same stuff from any medical supply place.

Isn’t goon tape just hockey tape? Funny AF movies btw! Reason I ask is there is all types of it on Amazon. Never used it and my 2cents is worthless, just curious though.

It’s semi worthless. I use it on metal GI mags to give some grip when pulling them out of Esstac pouches. But I have no idea why anyone thinks it provides more grip than a stippled polymer pistol grip. It’s soft and not grippy.

Not sure if they make it for whatever your specific application is but combat textiles are pretty awesome. I like them a lot more than the talon grips.

You're not winding it on thick enough.

16-17 layers & as you sweat on it, it'll shape to the form of your grip like an Estwing leather-handled hammer.

And then smell like something long dead wafting up from the edge of the swamp...

Guess I have commitment issues. It’s not the tape, it’s me.

It's not so much for grip as it is to keep from rubbing your stomach raw from the frame when you're concealing without an undershirt.

It is slicker than the frame, but it is beneficial when your hands are greasy or wet. I use it on some stuff but not everything. It has its purpose...and no, it's not the same as hockey tape. It's less coarse and doesn't leave as much residue.

It leaves more residue, trust me. As for carrying without an undershirt…..how many of you practice quick AIWB snatches without an undershirt?

I just got a roll of this and like it a lot. Doesn’t really grip until you put pressure.

Kind of expensive though.

Hockey tape never did anything to me back in the day

Tractor Supply or Ace may have it…called “Vet Wrap”. It’s a self-adhering bandage…Coflex, Coban…same stuff.

There’s a company that markets it in different camo patterns…best I can remember, I think it’s “McNett Camo Form”. I know Midway carries it.

Isn't that hockey tape what we used to call "friction" tape? It was just general use tape like electrical tape and before duct tape became popular. It always had a burnt tar smell.

Even Dollar Tree has coban type wrap. I always thought Mcnett's camo version would make a good scope wrap. Just hadn't gotten around to getting some.

Depending on where you are in Raleigh, you are welcome to wrap whatever with a roll of mine. I keep a couple on hand. Not sure where the residue comments are coming from, I’ve unwrapped a few Handguards and grips that have gotten hot without a residue issue.

Every magazine that I unwrapped had the sticky black shit you see on this mag (above the current tape).

That’s kinda weird, any idea how long it was applied? Age shouldn’t matter but maybe the adhesive breaks down or soaks out over time, or reacts with the coating. I’ll unwrap my 365 later to see if it did the same to the plastic grip.

Was on there for 6 months? Maybe it’s because the mags are rattle canned?

Came here to post the same stuff @Exspiravit

I use this stuff a lot on my steely mags to keep them from clinking in a carrier. Also, keeps from roasting your hands when you’ve been standing in the sun for a while. I know I know “wear gloves then” hurhur… I prefer dexterity over general concern for my own well-being.

It’s also great to wrap external battery packs to stocks when using thermals. I bought a cheapo 20000maH battery bank off of Amazon to use with my Pulsar. Few wraps with the tape and it’s secure and quiet.
