Mall Security is supposedly going to be deploying a dog to sniff out guns which are prohibited from the Mall. I wonder how long this is going to last. Nevermind the Constitutional issues with this. I know if you are caught they will ask you to leave which would be an easy OK bye from me, not that I would go there to begin with. Of course DPD would be involved undoubtedly

What exactly is his detection scent? Scent from residue of a previously fired gun, scent from powder in the cartridge, scent of oil lubricants … what? Guess I better never go into the mall since I’ve been carrying a firearm and could have some “residue” set off Fido and then Barney takes his bullet out of his pocket and puts it in his revolver.

There isn't one. It's all theater

Last time I went to a mall...
Hasn't been as long as I initially thought but something like in and out once every four years for the last couple decades. Nothing malls do is a problem for me.

Hoppes #9.

Hey, question for you dog people. Is it possible to train a dog to see a gun, or holster, or just a bulge on your hip?

I doubt it seeing it could be an insulin pump, some cell phones are huge. I would think it's only good for certain smells.

What Constitutional issue would this cause?
This is private property, not gov controlled, yes?

I'm pretty sure my dog sees my gun everyday, and the bulge is impossible to miss, even when you aren't looking for it.

i've had plenty of dogs sniff my bulge...
but not the one on my hip

Is there a risk at SPMall this year? Maybe they're concerned it's a Northlake Mall or Concord Mills (the two in Charlotte with trouble) about to happen. But I don't know, haven't frequented those areas in about five years.

Okay, it seems a true K9 trained for firearms detection is trained along the lines of explosives detection dogs … chemical trials from residue (GSR) even if not recently fired being their best friend since it’s trial can be detected at greater distances but they also can detect unfired cartridges but they need to be at an up-close and personal distance. As to solvents and lubricants it can be done as well but what other lubricants could also elicit a response that are not firearms related … wheelchair or scooters? Anyway if someone wanted to “have fun” take one of the rags they wipe down their firearms at the range with and wipe stuff in the mall to trigger a GSR response with no firearm present and see just how far Barney Fife will when Fido alerts … could be a nice little lawsuit if taken to far.

ETA … the sign says NO FIREARMS … but what if you leave your EDC in your vehicle but not your 2nd mag?

My thought process is if mall cop’s dog alerted on you now he tries to detain you or call DPD to detain you or if he tries to search you because the dog alerted on you. Sure it is private property but It’s not illegal to own a gun, so the most they could really do is ask you to leave. If it goes beyond that then it could present a Constitutional issue I would imagine. Sadly one of us would be the one to push that issue. The hood rats/criminals whatever would either have already ran away or shot.

I originally thought OK, gun sniffing dog, makes sense. Then someone above mentioned "theater". I guess the powers that be hope just the idea of a gun sniffing dog will deter some of the city of medicine's ute gun thugs. I kinda doubt it.

I think all they can do is ask you to leave
Why do you say, "Sadly one of us would be the one to push that issue"?

Because we would stand there and discuss it with them as law abiding citizens. The things would haul tail for the door or start shooting. They would not be civilized about it like average law abiding citizens would. It’s frustrating that the average law abiding everyday carrying concealed carrier would likely get caught up and maybe charged as an example that DPD and Paul Blart’s boys are doing good work using Fido.

I get what they are trying to do I really do but it won’t work like they are hoping

There's just nothing to discuss.
If they have a no-gun policy and catch one of us (yeah, If Im going to certain malls then I toss the LCP in the pocket holster and here we go), then just go, nothing to discuss. They have their policies and you (the royal) broke the 'rule' and got to go.

I believe all of you saying “all they could do is ask you to leave” may be incorrect. Crabtree Valley Mall cops are real cops with powers of arrest on that property. You can look through the Wake County mug shots and you’ll occasionally see the arresting agency listed as CVPD. And any citation they write would be as binding as the Raleigh PD.

If the same is true of Southpoint Mall, then finding you concealing without a permit will get you a ride down to the Durham County jail. Concealing with a permit could get you one of those $500 “infraction” tickets.

Mall security at southpoint is not private police like at Crabtree last I heard.

Please correct me if I'm wrong...

But, I thought, to be legally binding, the gun buster sign had to have the statute written under the picture of the gun with the red ring around it.

I went to the Southpoint mall in Durham 2 weeks ago. I looked at the gun buster signs very closely. They didn't have the statute written out, just the picture. No words or numbers at all. So, I walked right in.

Gun buster sign with the statute number written on it, you go to jail. Gun buster sign without the statute number written on it, and they can only ask you to leave. That's what I thought...

This is interesting, as others have stated I wonder what the charge would be? I don't really clean my guns so if the dog was even halfway trained it would be able to detect me.

I haven't been to a mall this year but last Xmas a cop was at my parents mall in Jacksonville checking people in. I just walked by casually and pulled my wife in close.

This isn’t about deterring people from carrying. It could be about that if you come across one of the dogs, but this was prominently featured on the news to get the local moms to come to the mall.

If no gun signs make them feel safer, just think what an anti-gun dog will do.

I believe it if a dog can tell when your blood sugar is low a gun would be pretty simple.

I didn't think about getting anti gun mom's to the mall. That's a good point it's all about the theatrics of safety.
