Have you purchased a die set for a caliber you don’t own?

Yep. I have several die sets for calibers I didn’t or don’t have at the time. If I get em cheap I add it. A few more common calibers I even have projectiles for already🤣

I could rush out and find something in those calibers but that’s half the fun. I got a heck of a deal on a .40 pistol cause dude couldn’t find ammo at the time but had plenty of other stuff. I had everything squirreled away to make my own. Deal.

I purchased dies and reloading components for 9MM several years before I owned a pistol in that caliber. Several shooting buddies had nines and they got their ammo from me . Win/Win situation. These days I now have a few 9MM pistols.

It's OK...

Buy the Creedmore.

I have yes, but as part of package deals. I sold off the ones I don't own guns for.
Now, I do have dies for several calibers that I own but have never loaded the first round for.

Yep. I have sets for my brothers guns and my uncles and some that were just a real good deal and some that I may want one day. I didn’t used to but with the way things are now I’d rather “invest” now than be without later when I do need it.

I agree on the investment comment. The shortages have been no fun to the reloader and I don’t see price decreases on any of this in the future.

I haven’t invested in any extremely uncommon sets just to sit on them BUT I’m a 45acp/45LC/45-70 guy yet I had 357 and 380 and 9mm sets before I owned guns for them and now I own several of all of those.

Yup….about 20 of them. Not sure why, although I think time will answer that ? …

At one time I was buying used dies (RCBS and Hornady) for calibers that I was hoping to get (30-06, 6mm and 22-250). Getting ready to order some 6.5 Grendel dies for a future build.

My standard caliber selection is based on brass that I pickup at the range. Once I reach critical mass for a given caliber, I buy a gun and dies for it. But, I have been known to buy a die set for a really good deal even if I don’t have a gun in that caliber.

Sorta how I did 9x25 Dillon. I couldn't find a barrel, or dies, or ammo. I figured if I got the barrel I would get the dies, but then what if the dies were gone by then? So.... I bought the dies and they sat on a shelf for over a year until I found a barrel. Smart move I say because by the time the barrel was in-hand... the dies had dried up.

So starting to get components for a caliber you don't currently shoot.... not so crazy now.

Just ordered a set of Hornady 6.5 Grendel dies. Expect the gun to be finished in 6 to 7 months. Now on the hunt for brass.

I haven't, but my dad did. Back in the day, he bought a set of dies for a 444 marlin. He never owned one, and neither do I. I have the set of dies for it though.

Yes, until recently. Bought a set of .308 dies a while back, and finally found the rifle i wanted few weeks ago...

I have loaded ammo for several cartridges i dont own...yet...

Yes a .25 auto set ,a 303 British set,a 6.8 .The latter two came in deals that I bought but never took the time to reload either because I sold the guns that shot them. I still have brass and projectiles for the 303 and some brass for the 6.8

I have dies, brass and bullets for 10mm and 40 but don't own either. I also recently started loading 270 that I don't own a gun for. Borrowed a neighbor's rifle for load development.

I have several die sets for calibers I don't own. Some I got in trade and just hung on to, others I bought with the intention of buying a gun in that caliber. Some die sets aren't easy to find so when they pop up you grab them.

I have done it several times. Usually when I am going to get into a new caliber, I’ll go ahead and look for the reloading components as well. Most of the time it’s worked out…. But a couple times I’ve decided to move in a different direction and needed to sell what I had already purchased.

With the way today's availability has been going, I haven't bought or built a new rifle unless I can have dies and brass in hand before I do. So I guess it's somewhat similar to buying for something you don't own, even though you plan to in the near-ish future.

Yes, but it is usually something old and obsolete, like 8.15X46R or .43 Spanish. Then, I NEED to find the rifle.

I used to only buy guns for which factory ammo was readily available. Then I got into reloading.

I would pick up range brass all the time. Whenever I reached critical mass for a given caliber, I would get the components and buy a gun. (50 AE was one).

Then I started picking calibers that looked interesting (like 7.62 Nagant) just to do it.

At this rate, I will break even on reloading somewhere around July of 2032.

Unless I find another caliber......

When I decided to build the 22 hornet I started acquiring components and reloading supplies. Somewhere along the way I picked up a set of Hornady dies, and proceeded to forget totally about them. Fast forward to January 2022 and the rifle is built. I'm getting everything out to load up some bullets and I get me new RCBS 22 hornet dies and set them up in the press. I go to the cabinet for something and find the Hornady dies. 😡

Anybody need a set of 22 hornet dies?

Similar things have happened to many of us, myself included!

I have heard some folks say they reload for every caliber they shoot/own which is impressive.

I haven’t been able to justify the wonky 22lr reloading process or get into shotshell myself. Another caliber is 7.62x39, they are wired to eat steel
