I dunno about this whole optics on pistols fad, but I'm trying it

It's really hared to explain until you have that "ah-ha" moment, but after years of focusing on the front sight, you really have to practice focusing on the target and looking through the dot at the target.

At one point on a target I distinctly remember seeing the old pasters getting knocked off the target by my hits, so at least once I was looking at the target and not the dot. Once.

It does not have to be in the center of the window for a hit at speed.

What about follow up shots? If the dot is there but wildly not centered that would make me think the pistol is out of alignment and isn't going to 'recoil back' to where it should be if the dot was centered (or irons lined up in the olden way).

When I shoot, the first shot or 2 the dot is close to centered because my presentation from the holster or low ready puts it there. It is 3d or 4th shot on a dueling tree or plate rack where the dot is a little off center, but i still get hits. The hardest thing for me is keeping my focus on targets while managing recoil.

Rarely, if ever, is my dot wildly off center unless I’m losing my grip (or concentration. In that regard it would be the same with the front sight because it’s my technique that’s failing and I’m not managing recoil well.

@Jayne I'm about a year into experimenting with a RDS on a pistol and it really does come down to just putting in the dry fire and live fire reps as others have mentioned. Inside of 20yds I'm still faster and just as accurate with irons, but once I start taking shots out past 20yds my accuracy is much better with RDS. This is largely because I can get a more accurate sight picture. I went with the Holosun HE-507C-GR-ACSS Vulcan from Primary Arms. The Vulcan reticule really does make finding the dot much easier, especially when shooting from non-standard positions for any of those that were curious.

Thanks for this. I’m just about to order one of these with the green reticle. I had never heard of them before.

I‘ve been playing with a Vortex Venom on a Dagger and decided I want to jump all the way into the optic game.

Planning to put this Holosun on a Walter PDP Pro.

This may help as well. It REALLY is an awesome RDS and I prefer the green. I had two different shooting buddies try my M&P with the HE507C that were RDS curious and both ordered it over a RMR or SRO.

Dang it, meant to bitch about PA in this thread but posted in bunsens older thread, lol.

I hate triangle/deltas in my optic. Wish PA would just do a dot with the large circle.

I was anti pistol rds for a while but have grown to really like them, my current favorite is the 509 acss

@Jayne just curious, what height irons are you using? You may have mentioned and I missed it. Sounds like you are getting there, so keep up the hard work. It will be worth it once you get it down.

I feel like I was an early adopter (I was using this setup 30 years ago).

Wasn't @JRV looking for an old dot like that recently?

Always looking. Found, but always, always looking.

I’m all over the place with the old stuff, new stuff, and the stuff I bought that was interesting (but would never use) like that grip mount.

I'm not really enjoying the experience so far of having an optic on my faithful G34, I went from being fairly competent with irons to shooting like a noob for just $350. Couple times I turned the dot off and just used the irons to make sure I really wasn't dreaming and that I can actually shoot.

I'm dumping shots low/left like I have zero trigger control, and fully expect someone to tell me to buy an apex trigger or some crap at any moment. Very frustrating.

My working theory is that the only time I look at the target when firing is on targets that are extremely close where trigger press doesn't matter. My brain says "well, if you're looking at the target now then I'm just going to slap this trigger even if it's 15 yards away because you're obviously not looking at the sights". Doesn't happen dryfire, only live when I'm thinking about other stuff.

Anyway, I'm giving it 6 months to see what happens. Going to run it in the IDPA match on Saturday, fully expect it to cost me significantly in overall standing since I really don't know what I'm doing. If it's really bad, maybe I'll just turn it off. No one will know I'm shooting CO with no O. :p
I stopped using mine because Rona/Riots. Once ammo gets back to normal and I can afford 10k rounds ill work on it again. It's fine from a draw-and-shoot but you put in movement or nonstandard drawing and shooting scenarios and i play the "Find the Dot" game. It's going to take reps I know that but I just don't have the ammo to put in the reps.

If you have not incorporated movement, non-standard draws, or even little “stages” into your dryfire, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity to save some money.

Stock height. That's one of the reasons I went with this dot, it co-witnesses with my regular sights. I thought that would help out since if I can find the irons I can find the dot in the same place.

Much better today, but I was also cheating and using a USPSA target instead of IDPA, that larger alpha box helped. :)

I am absolutely intrigued by the optic mount. Grip mount? Frame mount? One of the old school Keefer style mounts that bridges the plunger tube?

I've noticed that the dot isn't co-witnessing with the irons 'most of the time' which means the pistol is at some funky angle vs. what it should be.

IMHO, you should not try to co-witness standard height sights. When discussing co-witnessing, I assumed you had suppressor height sights. Standard height sights should sit at the bottom of the red dot glass. Just enough to see and line up if needed. The red dot should be centered in the glass, not close to the irons. And if you focus on the irons, you should notice that the front sight will be slightly higher in the rear sight. They should also be zeroed independently, with irons zero confirmed with the dot off. Then turn on the dot and zero with the dot in the center of the glass, not in relation to the irons. This is how I was taught about handgun red dots and standard-height iron sights. They are different than the relationship of rifle sights and red dots. I will try to find a video they showed us discussing this method.
