I want to know if anyone has already done this or know someone who has.

ALSO before I get started I have to say I know the dirt that is rubbed all over Hi Point. I just have fairly large & thick hands and do enjoy the size as well as the weight compared to many "larger" handguns I have fired. It has also been fairly kind to me considering the slander it gets. I believe the JHP45 is slightly acceptable compared to the hate which usually comes from the C9 if I'm not mistaken but I digress.

With medical bills, my project car, and school debt murdering me, I still wanted to go ahead and have some fun with new guns at a low cost. By accident (stupid thing to say I know) I ended up winning 2 Gen1 Hi Point JHP 45s through auction.

For the one I am working on, so far I have removed the mag "safety" because why would I not want to be able to fire my last round without the mag in. A high skilled bad guy could steal my mag and ruin my day. I also installed a short picatinny rail up top for potentially putting a red dot on, as well as being a better iron sight than the hideous stock one (sorry if you're one of the few that like them). The ghost sight Hi Point offers is actually quite nice, but I started to envision a black and red theme.

I am looking at JSARMSCO because they have an upgrade kit for a takedown screw which replaced the stupid sheet metal rollpin, stainless steel guide rod which replaces the stock plastic one, and a sear spring which reduces the trigger pull. They also offer a lower picatinny rail for a laser/light so I'm not forced to use the Hi Point laser which I find quite ugly and would prefer a strobe light for home defense, etc since this will probably not be an EDC for me.

There is also THING MEISTER FABRICATION who offers a 1911 magazine conversion kit which gives better feeding and eliminates that hideous battery pack Hi Point mag. They also offer a high grade aluminum trigger to replace the flimsy plastic one.

All in all, I have paid $85 for the gun, and with all the mods (including gun price) my total would be around 275. I know that price is relatively low considering it's also including the gun, but I'm more stuck on will those mods actually make it worth anything or should I just keep my $190 and give up on possibly making a decent Hi Point to be miraculously proud of.

I'm a hi point fan. Only one I have at current moment is a jhp45. And after thousands of rounds it has run flawless. Every carbine I've had ran flawless. Ive got a buddy who has a c9 and has never had any issues after around 7 thousand rounds. Hi point is the ugly girl at closing time. You don't want your friends to know but she is guaranteed to put out every time. I enjoy seeing people modding them and making them cooler. I think the guys who hate so much on hi point has never owned or shot one. The damn things work and work well. I tried the thing meister 1911 mag catch for awhile and it worked like it should but with standard 1911 mags you got to make sure it seats tight and then they can hangup and not drop free easy because they kinda set up into the bottom of magwell. I've seen where some guys have trimmed the bottom of there grip/magwell to allow the 1911 mags to be easier to work with. I just went back to the old battery pack factory mags. Here's mine with with desert digital camo hydrographic finish and the nicest chest rig probably ever made for a hi point.20230318_175534.jpg20230320_115746.jpg

That holster is a beauty. Assuming you prefer the stock mags? Really was convinced to get these mods done after recently seeing a micro roni conversion kit is supposedly going to be released in January. Still debating on it though.

@VP9 don’t you have the hi point custom?

The factory mags haven't givin me any trouble. The thing meister 1911 mag catch works fine but for the while I used it I didn't like how you have to push a little extra with your thumb to make sure standard cap 1911 mags was locked in tight. And wouldn't allways fall free when releasing cause they set almost inside the bottom of magwell. If running extended 1911 mags shouldn't cause these issues. And like mentioned above some guys I've seen trimmed the bottom of magwell a little to elevate this one issue. It wasn't worth it to me so I gave the thing meister catch to a buddy and went back to the factory hi point mags.

damn those guns are ugly, but i still like mine. There’s a part of me that honestly beleives that in 30 years hi points will be the next AK and there will be thousands of Reddit fanboys convincing each other to spend $3500 on an original Ohio factory C9.

Also, how did you mount that pic rail?

Lol honestly I thought the same thing but after some time it really grew onto me. Sure they're nowhere near as cool as plenty of other models but with a few simple mods I think they're not too bad. Agreed with the popularity. I also am a fan of them being American made.

As for the rail it bolts on with the same screws used with the original sights. Here's the link. If you have a Gen1 45 or 40 it fits the same as the 380 & C9.

Bro, they get a lot of hate, but I rarely hear of people whining about their reliability. While I have no need to own one, I will never knock someone who does. Pimp that sucker out and send it!

I might just have to buy me another one. I used to have a handgun and 2 carbines.

Thought about getting the carbine but might just wait and snag something a bit more snazzy when another holiday deal comes around. Later on when I'm not so much a stranger I'll probably be posting my other 45 for a fair deal if you're still searching then.

I'm one of the haters.

Those guns are so ugly and unreliable all the mods in the universe couldn't fix them.

But hey, better than a sharp stick I guess!

We only hate them because they are cheap. If they charged $400 for the same gun they'd have a much better reputation.

Personal experience? It's tough to find an actual owner who says they won't run.

That’s just some junk I had lying around so I could prop up the real deal
Ya know, somewhere around here I have a box of OG Haskel slides and grips (I think all the grips are left side? aint like you can look at both sides at once anyway tho), I -think- there were some barrels too, though they might have been used up in my Munich Bike Pump phase.

Anyways.....

If you wanted to throw a little cash on top, I think I could be convinced to trade you the whole box of collectables for that rattly German doorstop holding up Me Precious.

I know, I know, I'm in the Christmas spirit-of-giving mood today.

As an actual owner of one handgun and 2 carbines let me say that while the handgun was indeed 100% reliable my 2 carbines never were 100% good to go despite them having the rep for that. They were okay for the range but I would not have used them for HD.

2 9mms and a 45; as long as you don't limp wrist them they run just fine.

I know someone who owns one. Shot it several times. Can't remember if I ever made it through a mag without some kinda malfunction.

I have yet to hear of someone speak of a HiPoint as an unreliable gun
But lets be honest, they aint pretty.

Went to a range a long time ago and guy next to me had one. It was terrible. Might have been his grip or something else but he was next me complaining about it the whole time.

I would say the hi points look just as good as a glock does which is also very plain and non attractive. But just like a glock the hi points work. The new hi points in my opinion actually do have a cool look to them with the few small changes they've made to shape. I keep talking myself out of a new 10mm hi point pistol and that's cause I'm trying not to keep adding new calibers at the moment.

Curious to know more of what people who have handled them think. I am no pro but I am decently educated with guns and do well with their safety at least. From feeling out FNs and Glocks to maybe the cheapest thing being a S&W sd40 ve but never anything at this tier. Certain things I strongly don't like and I know the price point is a factor but they're not as horrible as their popularity states. Still, like I said I have some issues with them but the one I purchased through Gun Broker I believe isn't as clean as it seemed online. Definitely could use a clean up but I haven't done it as the pin to disassemble the gun seems to be an issue getting out. It's like a thinly sliced cut of sheet metal rolled up

Every carbine I've had ran flawless.

Ditto!
Have run ridiculous round count thru my OG (pre-redesigned stock) 995 without issue, some with the maligned Promag(?) 15rdr...
"Several thousand" rounds of commercial, various reloads, and even a bucket full of spicy Israeli "battlefield pickup" (IMI headstamps from 60s-80s IIRC) eaten without a hiccup or belch

I used to compete in small local action pistol matches and Im an old guy but we had a mixed bag of age brackets. We had one middle age guy that started showing pretty regular and he had a pretty tricked out Glock that had some money into it and if he showed he won the match by a LOT. He was a good shooter and I could tell he practiced a LOT also. Anyways, some guys grumbling about his almost race gun was actually winning the matches. I knew better but I kept my mouth shut. He caught wind or heard some of the complaining so one day he showed up with a Stock Hi Point in 9 mm and had T shirts and a hat that said " Team Hi Point" on it. Guess what happened, he still won by a LOT . Did it again and again month after month for the rest of the season.

Say what you want about hipoint guns' looks; they shoot and are accurate.

My son-in-law rolled his eyes at my .45, bit when he fired a mag through it and chewed the 10-ring out of his target, he changed his tune. He still thinks they are fugly, but they get the job done.
