No, not what's in your belly button, that's lint.
But the Catholic tradition of Lent
Starts tomorrow and goes through Easter

Anyone participate?
Im giving up cursing. It's gonna be tough.

What are the 40 days of Lent?
"Lent is the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter," "Those 40 days are set aside as a time of reflection, repentance and spiritual growth. 40 days are observed to represent the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert where he fasted and was tempted by the devil.

I did HMP for a long time. But now, hell I don't have any vices except hate some of the SOB's running the country so I'll try to work on that.
Between me and you, I don't think St. Michael would mind that vice of hate.;)

going well so far. came diwn with the flu ash wed, so didnt even think about wanting beer for the first couple of days. wonder if this is god's way of heloing me get off to a good start lol. i did find it ironic that nyquil is still 10% alcohol, but a shot of that at night is the only booze i've had at all since Fat Tues.

I wanted to remove things that distracted me. Gave up playing online games and reading online fiction, and stopped eating these 5 foods: cookies, candy, chips, cola, crackers.
It's Day 11 (yes, I'm counting) and it ain't been easy!

still holding strong. no alcohol since fat tues. wife has been on a trip this week so ive had all three kids myself this week. it wqs tempting to have a veer after getting them to bed in the evenings but ive been able to hold off.

Dedicated to improving my fitness. Eating better and exercising more.

That and not strangling anyone...

So so on the first two; great on the last ...

Have never had the self discipline to do lent correctly. That's why I shoot competition bench rest.

Iā€™ve been meaning to write this for a while. My pals and I rabbit hunted on Feb. 10 and drank a couple beers afterwards. I came home and goofed off in my shop while guzzling down about 8 to 10 more. I didnā€™t drink any beer Sunday or Monday, and Tuesday, the 13th, I read this thread. Iā€™m not Catholic, but my wife and I are members and regularly attend a Presbyterian Church. Iā€™ve always heard of Lent, but never knew what the true definition was, so I googled it and read up about it. I felt convicted to participate, so I have not had a beer or any alcohol since February the 10th.

I would not say Iā€™m an alcoholic, but I have no problem drinking 24 to 36 beers a week, plus drinking while we eat out. I will say Iā€™m feeling a nice clarity about things, but I can tell Iā€™m eating more, I think, to replace all the calories in the beer. Iā€™m honestly not struggling to stay the course and wondering if Iā€™ll resume the consumption of ā€œthe nectar of lifeā€ come April. More than likely I will once the weather warms up, but weā€™ll see. Iā€™ve learned itā€™s not a necessity and it sure as hell makes the tab cheaper eating out. While I know this is a more healthy choice, I solely chose to participate for a religious reason, even though Iā€™m not Catholic. Hopefully Iā€™m still allowed to participate. šŸ˜‚

I lent a midget my forehead last night. Does that count.

Several years ago, with a work group we went to lunch. One coworker, Terry, is catholic, it was lent and she ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. After eating half of it, another coworker pointed out that it was Friday during lent. She said, ā€œoh well, Iā€™m going to Hell anywayā€.

This story inspires me! Congratulations on taking on this challenge.

The choice to participate in lent is not reserved for only Catholics. I like how this article by an Episcopalian priest summarizes the way Christians practice Lent: https://www.biblegateway.com/blog/2022/03/what-is-the-meaning-of-lent-frequently-asked-questions/

I've found practicing abstinence from favorite foods/drink provides a break in habit that leads to questioning why I have the habit in the first place. The easy answers appear in the first week or two (I eat it because it tastes good). I purposely replace some habits (cookies for apples). I also question why I am still reaching for food when I'm not hungry. This could also happen on a diet, but when I do this for Lent I find myself more motivated to search for spiritual answers and my commitment is greater.

My situation is pretty similar really. I like beer. I decided that I might like it too much. Was raised christian, with a lot of time spent in both baptist and lutheran churches. I never was a member of a lutheran church, so no confirmation, no lent, etc. Was baptized as an adolescent and my faith is sound, however alcohol is something I began to enjoy in my teenage years. Of course tolerance builds and it takes more to have the same affect, and I figured I was drinking too much. Lent was a good "reason" to try to reset, so I decided to give up beer. I've actually given up all alcohol except for a couple shots of nyquil when I had the flu - which doesn't count lol.

I'm actually going for the health benefits as well, and I haven't substituted anything for the calories/carbs I was getting from beer. That sucks more than the not drinking itself, but it's working because I've lost 12 lb in almost a month. I'm not starving myself, because i'm still eating good meals. I do sometimes get hungry in the evening or if I wake up to pee during the night. As of now, i'm just snacking enough in those instances to satisfy the hunger, and that's working pretty well. I'm definitely waking up more alert and less foggy in the mornings.

All in all, it hasn't been nearly as difficult as I thought it was going to be, but hasn't exactly been a cake walk. There are some activities that are habitually associated with beer for me, those haven't been nearly as fun lmao.

I think i'm going to land on only drinking socially from now on, when others are drinking too.

During Lent my parents gave up sex and sleep in separate rooms.

On Easter morning my Mother heard a louder banging on the door.

My Father called out for my Mother to open the door. Guess what he was pounding on the door with?

You got it.

That's is why I am one of ten children.

I wasnt perfect during lent with my language, but decent, I guess. I tried.
But Im continuing on with it. Again, not been perfect, but I have actually preferred, as a whole, just thinking about my language/words before they come out. Pausing, censoring myself. Its been good for me

I went 2/10 to 4/19 without a drop of alcohol, but i drink beer only. My wife and I went to our local seafood place on 4/19 and I told her maybe Iā€™ll get a beer. Our regular waitress girl came over and set one down in front of me without asking and that was that. Thanks to this thread, I did participate and was successful. I am not Catholic, but I am a believer and regularly attend church.

i made it through all of lent with no booze. it showed me how much will power the mid can have as i was offered many drinks and refused them all. i think it turned the wife on too. that or our 10 year anniversary.

it was a good experience, but i dont think im gonna sign up for it again. i did go from 215 lb down to 202 lb as a nice benefit. im going to try to adjust my diet and excersize to keep that weight off.
