M1 Garand

Congratulations on the rifle, looks like a good clean shooter.
From what I can tell it is a December 1943 production so fairly likely to have seen service in WW2.
Looks like barrel was replaced at some point (very common) and the rear sight upgraded to the late style (also very common).
Considering it is 80 years old a checkout by someone in the know would be a good idea, but from what I see it is in decent shape.
Many people prefer to use 30-06 ammo specifically manufactured for the M1 which is loaded to mil spec velocities and “harder primers”.

Thanks so much for the info. I hope to learn all about it. Is there a way to identify which theatre it serves in?

Some clips work better than do others. Some I have are a bit too large to fit into the rifle easily. If you find a source for clips that work well, buy several.

edit: I got some that work very nicely in my rifles from Tanks Rifle Shop a while back. They seem to be out of stock at this moment.

Occasionally you’ll find some surplus ammo in clips, Greek or Turkish or something. Shoots just fine, but from my personal experience don’t let the sun set on that rifle without cleaning it or you’ll wake up to a rusty bore. Must be corrosive primered cases

I have all the gauges and tools for the Garands and replacement parts. If you find your way in Raleigh some time I'm sure we can check it out.
You can get data sheets printed from GCA and may want to join GSA.
Also the m130cal site has data based on SN as to the parts and type.
Yours is a rebuild with a replacement barrel so you may have a mix of parts. If it gauges OK and shoots ok do not touch the barrel but you could correct other parts if you wanted just to have Original WWII parts in it other than the barrel. Not really worth the cost but if it is just one or two parts it is cool to do.
The CMP clips and ammo are good to go. Or just find HXP ammo on the clips and re use them.

I’ve heard that. What ammo do I need to buy? The gun club I belong to does M1 Garand 3 position competitions and I want to try that.
CMP still sells new creedmore m2 ammo that's good for it. greek surplus is getting expensiver. hornady makes 30-06 specific for garand loads too.

Go to a gun show. somebody will usually have a couple bandoliers of clips. once in a while you'll run into a CFF-affiliated table that has what you need and a whole lot more.

And you can now join the M2AP club... so you got that going for you. It's not cheap, but it's nice to know you can pop holes in engines and give level4 body armor a good workout.
