Military Memes

When I was in the SOCEUR J3, I worked with an old, crusty SF CW5 who'd been a member of a couple different SMUs. Absolutely no idea what he actually did, but was a really good dude.

Navy WOs are SMEs (well, I guess all WOs are) in tech fields. I was in an officer leadership school with one, he had a BS and MS in nuclear engineering.

The Marines have WOs, one 'branch' is called a Gunner, and he is the weapons and tactics SME for a battalion. These guys are like gods. A lot of WOs in Marine intelligence.

Worked as a contractor on a marine base in IT for range support. Worked with station comms on exercise planning; the comm officer was a 1st lt; CW3 "advisor". The Col said what he wanted; the 1Lt proposed his solutions... I made suggestions to make it work. After 15 minutes of the Lt dicking around, the WO collected his papers, said "Col, I'll work with the contractor to make it work." Col said good meeting; let me know what you need. WO told me he'd stop by later and walked out, Lt scurrying behind....

for those of you with FB.

Same thing. It's OK. Nothing from any facebook server makes it into my network, on purpose.

My son-in-law (spc) and the ssg he was driving responded to a vbied rushing their position; ssg got a bronze star; son-in-law got an ARCOM for the same actions. He was resigned to it but the ssg tried to decline his BS unless they both got one. That didn't fly with brigade; they wound up giving it to him in the shop one day.

I fought against that crap when I was 1sgt; didn't get a lot of traction but swayed a couple of awards.

Pure BS is all it is.

There's always been a disparity of awards between junior and senior enlisted, and enlisted and officer. Also with some awards, a disparity between branches.
