First off, Welcome to America! You sound like the kind of folks that we're happy to have move to the states and become an American. Hope the immigration and move go well.
North Carolina is an interesting place. Lots of good rural folks, lots of farming, hunting and fishing, and we've got a lot of urban areas with high tech jobs too. Some of those urban areas do lean pretty far left, Chapel Hill and Asheville especially. There are a lot of good gun ranges within driving distance of Raleigh. I'm a member of DPRC in Haw River/Mebane, and there are several indoor and outdoor ranges closer to Raleigh than that. We have no shortage of gun shops in the area.
I feel like NC is one of the better states concerning gun laws. We don't have any ammo or magazine restrictions, open carry is legal, and a CCW permits aren't too troublesome to get.
I'm not sure how gun laws here work with immigration status, but I have known several folks who immigrated here who now own firearms legally. I would assume that if you could legally buy a hunting license in the US, you should be able to bring firearms with you, but someone more educated on that topic will have to weigh in on it.
Welcome. If you want a bit of land and be close to the airport, forget Raleigh, chapel hill and durham. I would recommend Chatham County, around Pittsboro.

You see, you just never know. I could have been posting on a forum in an area where meringue is far too french, or it's a beef belt and the locals don't take too kindly to any talk of baconTo long... did not read.
Scanned for: "Bacon", "Meringue" and "BBQ"
did not find...
First post failed bigly.
This being the case, if your initial visa is going to be non-immigrant, even if you don't hunt if it's easy to get a Canadian hunting license and you don't already have one, get it. Possession of a previous hunting license from any US State or Canadian province grandfathers you in to get a US hunting license without the Hunter Safety course.
Greetings!
Going to try and make this as short as possible, apologies in advance
So we've been looking for a while one where/how to relocate ourselves and our business to the States, but the latest NZ style gun ban (based on a "mass shooting" that they have militantly been protecting any and all information about) has given us the real kick in the pants to get moving. I was sweet on Texas and Tenn, but my sister lives in Texas, and is "thrilled" that the state is turning blue (she's always been a leftist), so Texas is right out. My wife comes to NC for biotech conferences and just loves it, the places, the people, the weather, etc etc, so I started looking seriously at the state, and yeah, I gotta admit it looks pretty darned awesome.
So we have an immigration lawyer at HunterMaclean in Georgia, and while it's REALLY hard to get a green card right now, we can probably do it on an L1 visa. But as long as we can do all the correct paperwork, get signed with the IRS, and pass the entry exam with the US consulate, we're probably good to go.
So as for me, I was taught to shoot by my grandfather, who was a legit WWII drill Sargent. I've been shooting since I was about 6, have had guns literally my entire life (my "toy" gun was an old training hi point that gramps likely bought from the army, he was too straight laced to steal anything). We used to have spots we could go on our bikes and shoot, 22 long guns haning out of gunny sacks on our backs...nobody cared or called police. I've seen that attitude change over the years, with the media pushing a fear-fuelled agenda to disam those that allow themselves to be disarmed. I am currently serving my "2 year amnesty" for the crime of owning a legally licensed, purchased, registered sporting gun (or as they call it, an "assault style rifle". In fact, they're hitting me for about $4,000 worth of "registered" guns. We've got neighbors calling the snitch lines on people they don't like, screeching about how dangerous guns are, cheering this arbitrary disamnament, and I tell you, I'm done. Put it this way, imagine California suddenly took over, and brian seltzer was lord and ruler, and he was just splattering the country with all sorts of SJW nonsense...and people were cheering him on. THAT'S what it's like here. They have weed, drum circles, guys that wear twat knots and capri pants...yes there are a LOT of good solid people here, but they've all been driven out of the cities, and the cities have all the voting power. In fact, only 2 cities select the leader, Toronto and Quebec. These are the cities where they direct most "new Canadians" and they shower them with free money, free phones, free healthcare, everything they need, so long as they vote. It's insane but very effective for the left.
So we are looking to not only move out of the city, but out of this country. We are one "order in council" away from being a literal dictatorship. He used guns to set a precedent in bypassing parliament (imagine hillary won and just shut down the senate and house, and just banned guns). This is the second time in my life they have done this. I lost my AK and MP5 in '95 to a similar ban, and that's when they started registering ARs (swearing they weren't doing it to ban them...ha).
Why I joined here was to get a feel/taste for the environment. I plan to get a property with a bit of land, somewhere around Raleigh (we do need to be near the airport for work), and I want to set up a spot to shoot (right now I have to travel an hour to a gun range to even plink, and they are trying to enact sound bylaws that will outlaw gun ranges, they are really kicking us hard up here). So I'm looking for maybe advice on areas to look at/avoid, maybe realtors to contact, things to consider, etc etc. Any tips would be welcome.
Oh and I'd like to also add. When we get there, we won't be like the "new arrivals" to this country. We plan to adhere to the laws and customs of the land, proudly fly the stars and stripes (can we do that as foreigners?), etc etc. We're not looking to rock the boat, we want to embrace what you offer, and hopefully add to it. We'll be setting up an office and looking to expand the business (biotech), add to the coffers of the IRS, etc etc. We are not snotty ungrateful people (in fact, I think we're incredibly nice). My daughter is hoping to get into Duke for her masters if we can get things together (and she keeps her marks over 90), she's thrilled at the prospect (getting a masters from a Canadian University is not looked upon as well in the medical circles as getting one from American ones).
So again, sorry for this long drawn out intro, but it wasn't as easy as signing up to a forum up here (I'm on the canadiangunnutz forum). If anyone has tips please feel free to chime in or PM. We're putting a fair bit of money and effort into the move, it's not something we're taking lightly. I'm not even sure if I can own a gun down there, I'm that clueless. I have a sizable collection here, and not sure how mach/any I can transfer down there, it's really angering what they're doing to us (I've got a couple of rifles I've had a LONG time, and I think you guys know how you can get sentimental about an inanimate object that's been with you on your journey in life). I'm actually contributing a fair bit to the legal battles that have just started here, I don't want to seem like I'm just running from a fight, but there's a time when you see where a country is headed, and have to pick up and head for the last truly free country in the entire world.
Agreed. If you just need to be near a big airport, and not specifically RDU, a lot of the state opens up. That would include living across the border in SC (as CLT airport is ~6 miles from the border). You can also find some nice places in the surrounding counties of the Charlotte airport. But you definitely don't want to move to Mecklenburg county. I know, I've lived here (Mecklenburg) for 60 years.
What does this mean...”they're hitting me for about $4,000 worth of "registered" guns”?
Didn't notice anything about your choice of mayonnaise or tea. What mayonnaise do you use? Do you like your tea sweet or unsweet?
Welcome! As stated above, sounds like you’ll be a better American than most Americans!!! Wish you and your family good luck!

And quit apologizing to everyone on your post...most of us have diarrhea of the keyboard from time to time as well!
Chatham county is going blue fast. You may want to look in Lee county (Sanford), they are still red.
Since you're in biotech, checkout the NC biotech center in RTP. They can help you with moving your business.
Welcome aboard, @High Caliber ... I have a feeling that you're going to love the South and her people. Enjoy the forum, and get used to reaching out for (and offering) assistance, no matter what the issue. (We have folks here who know everything about something, some who know lots about some things, and some who know a few things really well. (I, for one, am fully confident that I know nothing, in spite of decades of exposure to life's mysteries. )

Ignoring all other airports, 90 minutes from either of just those two is a fairly expansive turf. GSO is another decent sized airport, but it’s about halfway between the other two, so not a lot of geography is gained unless you’re looking directly North or South from there.
CLT is ~3-5x busier than RDU, which is ~4-6x busier than GSO...based on the latest figures I see.
Can you bring them with you here since your 2 year deadline isn't up yet?I have $4000 worth of AR's that they have notified me are now prohibited devices, and I have 2 years to hand in for destruction, or face 5 years mandatory prison time. They even upped the ante by including the uppers with the lowers. I've got a POF AR that I'm particularly fond of, kind of mad about that. They also claimed ownership of a few other choice pieces, but because they weren't registered, they accidentally fell into a lake. Unfortunate when that happens (resist registration of firearms at all costs!!! It DOES lead to confiscation!!!)
Welcome, Glad your joining us and for the right reasons.
Just vote properly, although it sounds like you know better than most what effect voting has on your rights. fly the stars and strips, Good luck.
I have to agree that Pittsboro area in Chatham Co, is likely a good place to start. In fact there used to be a large group of Canadians that lived/worked there. I'm not sure if they are still there or not. They owned an IT, web design co.
Can you bring them with you here since your 2 year deadline isn't up yet?
Dukes mayo........ just saying
This is not good, you have much to learn grasshopper.....is love of mayonnaise a prerequisite?~ I'm actually more of a miracle whip guy myself
Welcome! Not sure how importing the guns works, but as a US citizen from a bad state I made it a point to buy a house and move my stuff out of the bad state and into the new house before I even sold the old house. If you can swing it legally, get your toys out of Canuckistan a.s.a.p.
This is not good, you have much to learn grasshopper.
Welcome!
The SW side of hwy540 (Pittsboro area) might suit you, we’re 30 min from the airport and have enough dirt that we don’t see the neighbors & have a 200 yard range off the deck. We found a local realtor that really helped us out buying and selling farm/homes/land, I’ll send her info when I find her contact info.
@High Caliber
Glad You found us. We are a band of misfits and malcontents. We fight among ourselves but you will not find a greater bunch of people here. There is a brotherhood among us. We carry on about a lot of stuff such as mayonnaise, nanner pudding and other things. But when the chips are down, people here step up and help others. They also step up and help support this forum. Free give aways to help drive supporting memberships. Some of us have been together since 2007-2008ish. Poke around and join in where you like. And.....

Check with a local gun store about shipping them here and transferring them to yourself.I know nothing of the legality but driving them across the border is probably a bad idea.
Lord have mercy, get the man some sweet tea and Dukes mayo.I actually only like coffee, and I'm told "Hellman's" is the correct choice of mayo.
HA! High Caliber might be here just in time for the boogaloo.
The point of my statement about voting right. I see so many moving here from the NE US and talk about how much better it is here but vote the same way they did up north. Makes no logical sense to me.
It sounds more like your an American born in Canada to me. I know some Canadians into shooting sports and are equally pissed off.
Lord have mercy, get the man some sweet tea and Dukes mayo.
... I even have a big Bruins tattoo (sorry sorry, but yes I'm a lifelong bruins fan ...
Welcome to CFF, enjoy! One question though, why has it taken so long for you to decide to leave what sounds like a "hell hole"? By what you have said, you should have been gone long ago.
@High Caliber if you choose RTP/Chatham Co., we would be happy to call you neighbor.
BTW... There are many whiskey lovers among this group who live in this area. You would be a great fit.
