Unfortunately, there are so many different stories to Lynyrd Skynyrd that it's hard to keep it straight. That article posted above tells one version; the Netflix documentary (https://www.netflix.com/title/80993413) tells a slightly different one. And t answer the question of whether or not "it's just lyrics," well yeah, it is "just lyrics." I get it that there is some poetry and artistic license in music, but I'm also a fan of say what you mean and mean what you say. So how I hear it is as legit as someone's two-bit interpretation of what it supposedly means. Since the original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd are all dead but one, there's no clear answer from the horse's mouth.

I forgot about him--probably because the remaining members after the crash sort of forgot about him.

He's a bit too loopy in the mind to be reliable anyway! All that veganism peace tie-dye stuff!

Hilarious epic fail by whiney old liberal. Not sure who is more a jack ass. Him or raging for the machine. I don't listen to shitty singers so he has been a hard pass for me for about ever.
 
I like his music but I wish these entertainers would shut the hell up and just stick to music. No one cares what they think politically. Same goes with all the others like Springsteen.
