new Old Man gun - SA Ronin 1911 in 9mm

This Ronin has a Novak style low mount rear sight that is .350 tall versus the expected .325 (which I had ordered last night).

For those that like 10-8 performance rear sights it appears they don’t make one that height, but the good folks at Harrison do!

all the pieces and parts should be in by Friday. Will post pics before taking it to the range and breaking something Saturday.

What would a stipple job like that cost, about?
I’ve priced checkering but not stippling. I don’t even know how they do it on a steel gun, to be honest. Every time I see it though it seems to be on a semi-custom, or custom steel gun so I am assuming it’s pricey.

The Dawson skateboard tape comes in whatever color you like and is very coarse, and if you decide you don’t like it will come off completely with a little elbow grease. And it works GREAT for my intended purpose of keeping the gun from squirting out of my sweaty hands at matches in summer.

I think most use a center punch when stippling metal. I like that the skateboard tape comes off easy in case you change your mind.
And the tape sticks really well. I’ve put it on two 1911’s, removed it from two 1911s (one when I was giving it to my son), and the other when I made a brave attempt at checkering, stopped, resurfaced the front strap and reapplied the skateboard tape. It just works. The black tape looks really good on a blued gun as well. I had it on a Colt that was a back-up match blaster for a while.

Field grade this is grey matter, I need you to shoot it next to my Colt Combat Master , how about this Saturday ?

Hey you. If I all my pieces and parts arrive like they are supposed to and I get them fit to the gun I’m bringing it down Saturday. Probably have one of my boys with me. I’ll let you know.

Never liked the look of the stippling, and it never feels grippy at all to me. Looks like somebody took a hammer and punch and just went to town, which is what they do I think.

Would rather use grip tape, personally. And it cheaper and reversible. Easily replaced when it looses some grip. I use it a lot. On rifle grips too.

Just my opinion.

I ogle some custom 1911’s on some other forums and the new mode of stipling just doesn’t do it for me, either. I like old school checkering, but it’s a hard job to do one’s self, and probably half the price of this blaster once I ship, have someone checker it, do the obligatory trigger guard undercut, then refinish the frame, and ship back. Just not worth it to me.

Indeed. Love checkering.
Only my real spendy CZ has it. My other guns get the tape!

Passel of parts came in. On the right, Harrison rear sight 140 wide U-notch makes for quicker target acquisition, versus the 125 wide square notch that came in it. For me, anyway. I’ll be fitting that later today.

And beware, 10-8 Performance doesn’t make the 350 high rear sight for Novak cuts which is the height they are putting in Springers now apparently. This one is .350 and John Harrison makes these sights with Springfields in mine. The 10-8 is 3.25 I believe. And they have a much taller one. I like 10-8, but I think the Harrisin 350 sight height with the 180 tall front sight will work best for me based on past experience.

And another news flash for you 1911 shooters in 9mm. I picked up one of the new “gen 2” Wilson ETM mags with metal followers (versus the black composite). They are still so tall they are contacting the ejector.

See pic below of new Wilson ETM mag, then new Dawson Competition mag which I am pretty sure is a Metalform.

Wilson, touches the ejector. Not good, for me anyway. I’ll bend something.

Dawson mag. Plenty of space between feed lip and ejector. I’d take a picture of a Tripp mag but I sold ‘em awhile back.

Almost ready to rumble. Ordered standard Wilson grip bushings to replace the slim and they are lingering somewhere with the USPS. Imagine that. But here’s a glamour shot.

Wilson Bulletproof thumb safety
Harrison U-notch 140 rear sight
replaced red front fiber with green
EGW extended mag catch
trigger pull adjusted to 3.5lbs
Smith and Alexander mag well
flush cut slide stop
VZ Operator grips
Dawson grip tape front strap

I am going to run it in a few matches to be sure the beast runs. You know how my luck is with this caliber and platform. If it behaves I might replace the hammer, sear, disconnector, and perhaps slide stop.

Although... 5000 rounds into it with another Springer and all those parts look fine.

Not sure why but this thread reminds me of this scene from "The Jerk." All I need is this Ronin. This Ronin and a different rear sight. This Ronin, a different rear sight, and new grips. That's all I need. This Ronin, this rear sight, new grips and a new magwell. But that's all I need...

Oh good. You’re awake. I was going to text you to tell you I think I’m related to Roy Cooper. Wonder if he’ll reply if I send him a message and say, “Hey, CUZ!"

If he does tell him he needs to give this Coronavirus a stern talking to.

You know, to be in the wrong party, he’s a smart boy and looks to have come from good family. That said, I thought one of my old aunts married his grandaddy, but I think there just must be a bunch of Batchelors in Nash county.

I’m sorry, what was I saying?

Something about a sear and disconnector. But that's all you need.

And a hammer, which means I’ll have to drive the staked pin out of the hammer to free the strut. Another $175 all told.

Dumb question...how many rounds did you shoot through the new Ronin before you started homesmithing?
I bring them home, field strip, inspect, lube, then put a couple hundred through them.
Then it’s off to the races. I already know in advance what pieces and parts I plan to swap to get the grips, controls and sights like I like so it’s fit to shoot in a match.

I don’t know how much I’ll shoot it before I decide to swap the internals. I tend to find out how reliable they are when shooting matches. I can make them do wonky stuff on the clock that I sometimes can’t repeat at the range alone.

For real. At what point did it stop being a Ronin in anything but the roll mark?
allllllll those MIM parts that folks over on the 1911 forums get all worked up about, but I honestly have had no trouble in the past with the Springers

Considering your history with 9mm 1911s, I was curious how many rounds it took for you to be convinced it was a keeper. I think " a couple hundred" makes me comfortable with most non glocks also.
I have also had at least one that ran great out the box, but by 5000 I was finding out how soft the slide was due to peening in certain places, and badly worn internals. Not a Springfield or Colt.

Honestly, I have as much fun futzing with them as shooting them.

Do I have to guess on which brand has the soft slide? RIA?

I wouldn't have guessed colt or Springfield anyway.
I didn’t put but a couple of thousand through the RIA. All things considered it was a real good shooter for the money. I just made it do some wonky things that only I seem to be able to do with that caliber, and platform.

Well, and @Millie
;)

The RIA has behaved really well lately....it's due for an issue any day now...lol.
And the CZ had 2 f. to feed today, and one Sunday.....hmmmmm.....limp-wristing?

I too have noticed that the Clock has adverse reactions to folk's guns here. Has Nothing to do with their shooting it's the Damn gun....or the Damn Clock!
It’s the 30+ point IQ loss once the timer goes off. From there it’s all of the corresponding drool combined with crayon bits and wads of chewed up coloring book that get in the action.

Nighthawk flat faced trigger incoming.

I like flat triggers in striker fired blasters, can’t be too bad in a 1911.

We’ll see what all the fuss is about.

I put one in my last, not expecting to like it, but I really do, much more than flat pivoting triggers.
