I dont have a good answer for you on that. I have seen a few videos and read some that you can use mineral oil on horn, but I haven't seen anything definitive on the long term. Short term makes it look nice.
 
Last of the checkering and the most difficult. The checkering had been worn slick and just faint lines remained. Had to start from scratch on this one. It was very difficult because of the tapering in width and height along with the tight curve radius.

Thanks for the offer of the cradle but I went ahead and purchased one. I figured if I could checker this one there were a few others in my collection that could use it too. I've been thinking real hard about checkering my Marlin 1895.
