Overheard at the Range - Let's Hear 'Em!

I'm going to tell this one on myself.

New shooter, first time ever shooting my "shiny new" SKS at Davi's in Raleigh. Yes, an SKS at a short indoor range.

I got set up, sent my target back, fired one round and the hit the steel target hanger. Loud, shook the target loose and got me stink eye from the RO. There are signs about being ejected for hitting the target carrier, like everywhere.

New target. Check the sights. Shoot. Hit the target carrier again. Shit.

The RO comes in looking furious, asks politely to see my rifle. Asks me if I've ever shot it before, I explain I have not. He then explains that the adjustments on the sights are in hundreds, not tens so I've got it set for 500 yards and that's why I keep hitting the carrier. He returns my rifle and goes back to his booth.

Boy was my face red.

If it's the pro I'm thinking it is, he's a really nice guy. Known him for a long time. Now that I sit here calculating exactly how many years, I made myself feel old.

Super nice guy!
Never seen him be anything but cool and helpful.

Shooting my very "distinctive" looking Mac10, a guy walks up and asks " Is that a Thompson?"

Umm...no.

Uh oh this sounds familiar. What year was this?

For the record, there's no need to worry about shooting the target carriers at Davi's. When I worked there, they got shot all the time. Of course, I only worked at the old location not that bigger place they eventually moved into.

Over heard at the range today between two guys shooting a Glock 19 at 10 yards. Their target looks like Stevie Wonder let loose with some buckshot out of a 8" barrel:

Guy 1: this gun sucks. You should take it back and get a refund.
Guy 2: yeah I can't believe people swear by these.
Guy 1: glocks are good but you got a bad one. If they won't give you a refund ask them to polish the sear and the hammer for you. That will eliminate all that extra travel in the trigger . And have them put better sights on it too.
Guy 2: yeah let me write that down so I remember.

I almost corrected them but I figured I'd let the guy at the gunshop share in my amusement.

So there was this indoor range on 70 in Raleigh? Anyone remember it? On the right headed towards the airport? Well, in 90-91 I guess, I heard a guy say "was that your gun" after my....ummmm...Lorcin blew up. I swept up my parts and went home. Truth.

Yeah, something about a Glock frame makes it impossible to line up the sights and pull the trigger straight to the rear.
My hands are plenty big enough and i can make the sights work for me but its not a natural pointer in my hands. Ive held and pointed glocks and they really honestly dont point well for me. Believe it or not.

But you can still line up the sights and pull the trigger.
I don't care for the feel or grip angle, either!

"I wouldn't go 6.5 Creedmoor, it's not much more powerful than a .22LR past 100 yards". "Just get a 30-30!"

Heard today at Cabela's. I almost spit my water!

Actually I think that has been said here on the forums.

Told to me recently at the range. Elderly shooter walks up behind me while I'm loading a magazine. This gentleman was very nice and polite. He was just there to ask me if he could go downrange to retrieve a target. But before he asked, he exclaimed, "That sure is a scary looking rifle." But he did know the caliber right off when he said it in the form of a question. We talked at length when he returned from getting his target. So it was a positive encounter.

It's true

All gamer shooters know it

30cal BABY

Really? I always try to find all the grenade launchers, RPGs, Javelins, Claymores, Bazookas, etc.... that I can find when gaming. .30 cal is for babies. I like to blow things up like @Hammer21b when playing games.:D

Mine either, but I've taught myself to shoot them quite well! But it took a lot of effort from me.

Based on the last time I went to a public indoor range...

Pretty much any sentence that starts with "well, I'm a cop, so..." which I heard multiple times as the DB was trying to help/show-off to the guy next to him.
I had a new LT one time that had been a cop. He bragged about how good he was shooting handguns. We had some extra 9mm one year while at qualification and the CSM wanted to do a competition. The guy he wanted for the company was gone so he came to me and asked me to represent my company. This 2LT was bragging and telling how he was a cop and all of the competitions he'd won and ... I shot circles around his ass! He came out about 4th and all we heard was was how the gun was defective and the wind was blowing and if he had his personal weapon, and he never lived it down!

I went with a friend to a private range where I was a member once. His objective was the annual sight in of his deer rifle, as well as those of his father-in-law, grandfather-in-law and uncle-in-law. His job. Every year. My objective was to make sure my scope hadn't wandered from its 300 yard zero and to see where the fouler round went from a squeaky clean barrel.

We arrived to find a truck parked in front of the locked gate and the driver reading the 3x5 sign with the range rules. I get out and the fellow asked if the range was open to the public. I explained the range was private and open only to members, but membership was open to the public and I told him what evening meetings were when he could join.

Then I asked where he lived, what he did, etc. He said he lived in a nearby town and was a state trooper (NH). OK, there's BGC & reference rolled into one. "You are welcome to shoot as my guest today."

He sets up a target on the 100 yard line. Several shots. No holes. OK, he did tell me it was a brand new rifle with a brand new scope he had just mounted. Been there, done that. He backs it up to 25 yards to get on paper. Once done, back to 100 yards. After all adjustments he fired about 10 rounds for group size. At least 8 inches.

I brought my target back from 300 yards. Fouler is 5 inches low, the rest are all in the 10-ring. My buddy's results were very similar with all four rifles (the one with his own might have been the best). He decided he was done.

In his defense, he was very nice, thankful for the invite, and humble enough to say upfront that he wasn't an expert, but that badge is not a marksmanship medal.

I go to the range to relax and have fun. I don't judge anyone else that is there shooting unless they are doing something unsafe. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm far from being an expert or even a good shooter. But sometimes I do find certain things funny when at the range. Not long ago, my 16 year old son and I were at the range. We were first shooting on the 100 yard line. Then my son said he wanted to see how he could do with his AR over on the 200 yard side. It was a recent build with a 16 inch barrel in 5.56 with open sights. There was already another gentleman shooting on the 200 yard side. He was also shooting an AR but it had a long range scope attached to it.

We get over there and start setting our stuff up. I get the spotting scope out and set it on the bench and start adjusting it and so forth. This guy comes over, very nice and polite btw, and asks me if my spotting scope can see .22 holes. I told him that it can and I'd be happy to spot his shots for him. We haven't put our targets up yet at this point. His target was a white poster with what looked like about a 4" x 3" rectangle drawn in the center. He takes his shot. It hits about 2 - 3 inches right of the rectangle but the elevation was spot on. I told him where it landed and he seemed very surprised that it wasn't inside the rectangle.

Meanwhile, he lets us go downrange to put up our targets. We return and my son gets out his AR and starts preparing to shoot. He sits down and starts loading a mag. This gentleman looks over and says, not verbatim, "Wow, iron sights on the 200 range? Well okay then." He sits down to watch as my son takes his first shot. Now, what happened next was pure luck. My son does pretty well shooting but this was a lucky shot. His first shot hit dead center in the bullseye. I was looking through the spotting scope and called it out, "Center of the bullseye". This guy gets up and starts packing to leave while mumbling something about his rifle not liking the ammo he was shooting or something to that effect. Lol.

one night while shooting I was having some light primer strikes on my AR15 and so I opened it up to see if what part was dirty... the RSO came up behind me and said I needed to oil my buffer tube. I honestly couldn't tell if he was fkin with me or not.

I feel like I'm lucky. I don't have many "heard at the range" stories. I guess when I'm out at DPRC there aren't many range ninjas around. I have seen a guy trying to shoot 22LR out of a 22 mag, and wondering why every case got stuck in the chamber before.

I do know a fellow who swears the 25acp is the best self defense handgun out there. And despite being shown how its really a marginal handgun at best, he only doubles down on how the 25 is supurb to everything else. I never want to go to the range with this guy. He calls his SKS a "wannabe AK" out loud, and shoots his snubbie judge gangster style, held sideways.

Got into an argument with a guy once while checking out some guns. I was looking over a K31, and he told me that K31's weren't safe, and that they'd blow up in your face. I told him I'd never heard of that happening, and that the Swiss used them for 50 years, and if they did that, they would have fixed it. I told the guy the K31's are known for their accuracy, and that they're a good milsurp. Guy proceeds to tell me his Mosin will out shoot a K31. (I saw said mosin.. it was a sewer-pipe beater gun) He said his mosin could "stack them on top of each other" at 300 yards. I called his bluff, and said meet me at the range tomorrow, and bring $100. He never showed. Later found out that guy had actually been in the military. Goes to show ya, just because someone's been in the army, doesn't mean they know jack about guns.

Is this the guy?

A cop told me that the 7.62x39 is a flatter shooting round than the 5.56. I make it a point not to say to people "you're wrong" - so I just said, "Hmm, are you certain?" He reconfirmed his response, and I said "interesting, didn't know that."

Old man told me I couldn't have a 14.7" barrel on my rifle unless it was a registered as an SBR. I told him you can actually have a flash hider welded for an OAL of 16. he scoffed

Maybe someday I will try that not telling people they are wrong idea. Maybe.
