If you've got a kid at/was at NCSU you might want to have them check for cancer a bit more periodically.

* At least 52 cases of cancer linked to Poe hall so far, 1 person has died.
* PCB levels up to 38 times higher than EPA standards found in 7 rooms and the air ducts
* Most of the buildings at NCSU are pre 1980 so probably have the same problems
* EHS tried to cover it up. Was notified of anonymous reports by NIOHS and refused to cooperate, didn't allow inspections, didn't follow up. Denied claims of pulling out but the CDC produced emails showing the communications.
* EHS has tried to cover up, knowingly ignore, and gaslight chem students in Dabney hall about asbestos not being handled during construction as well as leaky fume hoods depositing fumes throughout the building. Disregarded the custom sensors placed all over the building by a grad student and then claimed it was fine when they tested the air during a break when no one was in the building.

Wow, I spent a lot of time there when I was in school. I wonder how far back this goes.

A long way. PCBs have been banned since the eighties.

I'm conflicted about the situation. PCBs are bad news, but cancer is the sum total of everything that's ever happened to a person. Of the however many thousands of people who have passed through this building I'm not sure that 54 is statistically significant.

I had class there once, if I get cancer one day is it because of the PCBs or the nitrates in the bacon or the diesel fumes or what?

Still doesn't excuse refusing to remediate it though.

Was there in the 70's. Only had a couple classes in Poe over 5 yrs but there was asbestos pipe insulation everywhere in the older buildings, PCB's in transformers and lighting ballasts. Used to see black goo on the bottom of exposed and insulted pipes in the over head everywhere.

Universities often brag or show off their "historical" buildings trying to impress visitors how long they've been around. Rarely mention how they aren't really maintained to modern standards, EXCEPT when they send 'beg' letters around trying to grift even more money to "help keep our heritage alive" BS.

Like most businesses Uni's don't really allocate enough funding to keeping that shiny expensive glassy 'green' building maintained over it's life span. Burn the big donor dollars that give for a new research or medical building but once it's up and operational, it starts to fall apart.

Those DIE admins and 'special' groups need that funding way more than the facilities group don't you know.

Ok, that's enough bitterness for a Friday. Let's move on to happy hour.

Nobody could resist messing with these things. universities gotta keep a schedule of wrapping and painting them every few months because everybody picks at them.
