Best feeling ever was making it to the shelter and having a nice hiker or hikers leave some dry wood. I needed a fire in a bad way i was suffering from hyperthermia bad enough my motor skills were terrible and was having trouble using my hands so i got stripped down and straight in my bag while my buddy built a fire ended up being a awesome trip no one else out there but 2 other guys knocking out a section they were pretty cool

This was last weekend on a long weekend stay off the parkway, near Ennice NC. First is me as we left out on the Gully Creek trail at Cumberland Knob, and the second is the wife at Stone Mountain State Park. We are VERY GREEN day hikers, and the Gully Creek trail was a challenge for us, I don’t mind admitting. We had fun though and will continue to work up our stamina in the future.

Took two of the boys up Shortoff Mountain this morning. We arrived at the parking area before daylight and it was already packed with cars of campers. Found a place to park and headed up the mountain.

Sunrise from the south face:

Looking over the “short off.” It is a long, sheer way down.

A rare natural pond on top of the mountain.

Varying degrees of fall color from the mountaintop. Still not peak up there in most places, but beautiful nonetheless. Met some really nice folks on the hike, as well.

I’ve lived in NC all but the first three years of my life, and most of that less than 90 minutes from the trailhead, but this was my first time on this trail. Won’t be the last.

Took my youngest son up on the bald where the AT crosses at Carvers Gap on Roan Mountain when he was in eighth or ninth grade maybe 10 years ago. He was a young man of VERY few words, but this was his reaction on top of the bald.

Took a group of low country SC kids to the top of Black Balsam one day. Typical teenage boys just goofing off. One of them asks me why they couldn't see all the mountains. Told them, because those are clouds and you are above the clouds. The whole group got quite and just stared. Good times.

Im in the hills and want to hit the trail but my knee is acting up i still might do a easy one just to get in the woods maybe a 2 miler i think im going to have to wait till next year to jump back on the section i left off

Hiking with a gun. 28 miles over 4 days, half of that time in 12+ inches of snow. Lows in the single digits, very thankful for the propane heater we had. Sierra Madre mountains in WY.

Might be the last hiking/fishing trip for the year. Hit a new trail I have been eyeing and will definitely be back. Only one small brown to hand. Missed one and spooked another. Great looking water though. Did find a pair of wading boots at the creek.

Colors are still nice but definitely past peak and dropping fast.

@cubrock got to test drive the iPhone 13 pro Max camera. Ohhhhh this thing is nice.

Not exactly hiking...driving back home from Pigeon Forge today. Stopped several places along the way. This one was on Newfound Gap Road, right around the corner from the Oconaluftee Visiter Center.

That's a lotta Elk right next to the road. There were at least twice that many total in that one clearing, with all the ones you can't see in this pic.

Just a modest last week hike thru Clemmons State Forest in Clayton

By the way, I requested them to change their "no guns" signage that they had (incorrectly) posted and to their credit, they corrected them!

Cold weather hope you had a great fire going
For sure! Wasn’t too bad, dipped down around 30 Saturday night. The boy had a goretex bivy over his bag, so he stayed nice and toasty.

Oahu, at the end of the Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail overlooking Kailua, Lanikai Beach, and Waimanalo on the South-Eastern side of the island with my oldest daughter (top).

Waimea Falls at the end of the botanical gardens near Waimea Bay on the Northern end of Oahu...again, with my oldest daughter (bottom).

This was November last year.

46 years ago I climbed those falls on the right side, crossed them and went up to the top and dove off.

Waimea Falls, Oahu early October 2020, then about a month later in November. The October shot was about 2 months into a dry spell and there was no water over the falls, with the pool below about 5 or 6 feet lower than normal.

Had the day off today so I took a hike up to Youngs Mtn in Lake Lure. 4.3 mi out-and-back trail without another soul in sight. A bit breezy and chilly at the top but overall a good hike
