Of coarse, the first on that comes to my mind is the 10/22. Is there a better option in that budget range I should be considering? I'm just looking for a nice, accurate plinker I can mess with.

If you can find one, a Marlin model 60 or 795. The 60 has a tube magazine, and the 795 uses a removable mag.

A few years ago you could find them new for around $150, and at pawn shops for under $100. Both are excellent rifles. Personally, I find both to be more accurate than the 10/22, and more reliable too.

Unfortunately, there's fewer options for customization, if you're into that.

Have they gotten stupid, too, or are they still reasonably priced?

Any in particular you would recommend?

My first one was a Marlin 783 bolt action, tube magazine. .22 WMR. It was a real tack driver.

I've got another Marlin in .22 LR...Marlin 881, I believe. Just as good as the 783.

I dint know what the modern model numbers are, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one based on my older ones.

My wife has a Savage Mark 2 built action, magazine fed. Also a sweet shooter.

Bolt actions are super easy to clean and maintain over lever action or semi-auto. Don't ever have to worry about a semi-auto action being finicky.

Those brands are awesome in my experience, but I'm sure there are others out there that are also good shooters and inexpensive.

Are these even sold anymore? I was looking for one locally last week and nobody has nothing. Somebody said something about Ruger suing S&W causing problems with availability.

Ruger suing S&W
IMHO, Ruger is the Lawsuit king, both ways. Perhaps with more incoming vs outgoing.

Seems if one looks around for one, you'll find one.

I'd lose that one in the woods. ;)

Spray it Neon Pink

Try their dealer locator

If you want maximum accuracy in a bolt action, consider the CZ 455. They have an outstanding reputation for accuracy.

This is a good answer, but a 457 is probably easier to find. Last one I saw was about $450 and they come with good open sights. I have a Bergara BXR 22 that is a decent improvement over a stock 10/22 if you want to go that route. If you go bolt action with good sights you save some $ on a scope and rings. IMO the barrel and trigger are kinda important so I like my CZ‘S.

Downside of many 22 rifles is magazines - which one will you find years down the road when you have lost yours , or they wore out - it will happen
Ruger is hard to beat , the bolt action American is a low cost nice bolt 22 that accepts 10/22 mags which a million people make
10/22 for semi auto
15/22 from S&W is a great option as well - good trainer for a “full” power AR15

savage 93 fvsr is a good accurate budget bolt action highly customizable. Cz is next step up price wise but another good option depending budget.

10/22 is still at the top for customizable semi and budget friendly. But as others have mentioned ahead of me there are other options depending your flavor and budget.

I like the Savage FV-SR for plinking....and that's changing out that cheapo stock. If you want to go out to 200 with it you can, if you want to shoot 25y groups.. that's good too!

Ruger 10/22 is just a good platform. You can take it anywhere with after market.

CZ's are great, good precision, some with Excellent precision.

Anschutz are frickin awesome. Period. Some new stuff coming out... but their old stuff is good too.

Vudoo's. That is right now the big thing for PRS. They are on par with Annies'... .and make great clone guns for your centerfires

TandemKross sells replacement feed lip and rotor parts for the Ruger rotary magazines and a tool to disassemble them.

That looks interesting. Might be a little hard to come by since they stopped manufacturing in '89
I have one of the most common, and two that are the least common. 'T'ain't that hard to find 'em, unless ya don' wanna pay outrageous prices!

There was a copy of one in the BST here not long ago. Last I saw it hadn't sold.

Well, back on the hunt. I missed out on the Armslist 10/22. There’s a 50th anniversary 10/22 listed but I don’t think it’s worth the premium.

That Marlin 99 is sweet!
That 99 reminded me of a TALO Edition 10/22

I like a Backpacker 10/22 myself.
