Considering having my 521-T (from when I was a kid) drilled/tapped to put modern glass on it. I believe is was manufactured in 1949. I'm looking for advice on the *best* gunsmith (based on familiarity with vintage target rifles) to to drill and tap it for an EGW base made for the gun. I'm in Hickory and am willing to drive anywhere between Charlotte, Spartanburg, Asheville and Boone to have the right person work on it. I'm not looking for a smith that "can" do it - I'm looking for the best choice to have it done right since there are no do-overs.

Am a little conflicted about D/Ting it - but it is (and only has been) a shooter and has been used way more than enough that it is no collectors piece, but I also don't want someone messing up a rifle older than me, that my grand-kids might be using to be teach their kids to shoot with one day - and that future generation wondering who bubba'd it up.

Thanks!

If you have the original peep sight I wouldn’t d&t it. Easy to get a 22 with glass.

I do have the original Lyman 57R. I'm not sure I'm following on the reasoning for your suggestion though. the rear peep would have to come off - but the mount would stay on. In my mid 50s I'm not shooting with a peep any longer, and am unfamiliar with any present sport that requires one, that wouldn't also require more rifle. I'm not trying to to argue with you, just not sure what I am missing.

They're saying "I wouldn't mess with a classic when there are other options". IOW, buy a new .22 to scope and keep the old classic alone.

I'm in the "it's yours, do what you want" camp.

Ah - makes sense! I get. Was able to calculate the last time it was shot was 38 years ago in my last small bore match. Seems letting it sit for another couple decades wouldn't serve it well either.

Take it to this guy, or just call him for a smith recommendation. He will set you on a good course.

I’m def in the “do what you want” camp, just offering a suggestion. Probably cost less to d&t than to buy a comparable new gun. I’d buy new and suppress, but everyone makes their own decisions.

It's your rifle do what you want. You said it was a shooter so do what you want to shoot. I am into my 60's and know why the peep sight thing don't work. I have a Kleingunther K-22 that I am thinking about threading the barrel. Some would call that blasphemy.
