I've rode the Dragon once a few years ago on my KLR650, two weeks after getting my 1st bike in 30 years, and with only minimal experience before that.
Buddy and I trailered our bikes out there and stayed for 2 days of riding the dragon and similar mountain roads. Was the most fun I've ever had with my pants on, but I made it home only by the grace of God.
I was riding the dragon at 95%, I thought, which was stupid in itself. Turns out I was riding at 105%. Something that interested me passed me going the opposite way and it distracted me for a split second. Next thing I know I can't make the next corner, or in that split second I convinced myself I couldn't make it. I had to decide to try anyway and almost certainly crash, or take my chances and cross well into the opposite lane on a blind corner.
I chose the latter, and could have easily killed myself and others but the good Lord gave me a pass that time. I'lll go again because it's so much fun, but I'm not riding that close to my limits on the street ever again.
