Talk me out of building a kit car... Daytona Coupe

I just reminded myself how I've talked myself out of this three other times. Just by going through the order form to see what options are available that are additional charge and that I am sure I would absolutely "have to have."

Like my recent "basic" AR build that I am into for $1,400.

You are not getting out of life at the end with any cash in your pocket for your next stop.
Build the AR like you want, build a Type 65 and follow our instructions.

Originally, I wanted to head down the v8 path. Page one of the build guide talked me out of it.

Please don't skim over this section.

Let’s face it, the end goal of this project is to turn a reasonable, perfectly innocent Miata into something that might be slightly safer than a motorcycle. To take on a project like this, you need to be a certain kind of crazy. We at Exomotive live for this sort of crazy, but there’s no reason to take unnecessary risks in any step of the process.

Let’s get this out of the way right now: if you’re adding forced induction or a V8 swap into the mix, get some driver training. Seriously, we’re past the marketing speech here: a turbo and/or V8 Exocet is seriously, terrifyingly fast. It is faster than most road course racecars. It is faster than your friend’s buddy’s neighbor’s back-halved 600hp Camaro. With just an FMII bolt-on turbo kit and no internal mods, our own XP-3 has the same power-to-weight as a Ferrari Enzo and most liter-bikes. To put that in perspective, that’s like driving a new Mustang GT with 800 hp.1500lbs is crazy-light, and a little power goes a long way. The Exocet is inherently very easy to drive, but the power-to-weight levels of even a turbocharged 1.8 makes driving one of these things a special experience. Some of you are planning 500+hp LSx builds. Please be careful, and understand what you’re getting into.

Does that say "I dare you"?

Of all the options, the Daytona Coupe is my dream kit car. Not sure if it's still that way, but used to you just needed the kit and essentially a donor foxbody drivetrain. I'd do a coyote turnkey kit and a T56 Magnum or the like and a 9". I WILL build one myself someday. You have great taste.
Man, I've wanted a Coyote since I was a kid watching Hardcastle and Mc Cormick!

I aint going to talk you out of this
I say go for it!

I had plans to do the same about 15 years ago till I ran into a guy who had one and I realized I couldn't fit into it.

They've dropped the floor 2.5 inches in the latest design that just came out. With the right race seats (I can't remember the brand I saw in the FF forums) it apparently fits larger drivers. Getting in and out remains the indelicate task.

That should help some. Last one I couldn't even get my leg under the wheel to get into the car as the wheel wasn't tilt adjustable and my feet were too big for the foot/pedal box if I had gotten in. This guy had a very nice one though.....427ci that shook the ground at idle. His was a Superperformance version which I believe come pre assembled.

Yep. And they are quality vehicles. They build them in South Africa. Olthoffs Racing in Mt Ulla outside Salisbury sells them and will put an engine for a turnkey project.

I laughed out loud as the she pulled out onto pit road and set off the Ferrari security alarm with combustion explosions! :D
I laughed at that one too! Had to rewind and watch a couple of more times :)

If the engine has enough cam to scare women and small children at the street corner, whatever is housing the engine will not matter.

Here's a real one at the track. Forward to :37 to hear it. It is magnificent both at idle, and in the back straight.

The Gen 3 looks promising as they've made a lot of changes. It's a totally new car. I may need to revisit once the kids are off and gone which is gonna be awhile

Don't Do It!

Unless you are gonna let me drive it some.

I've seen a Superformance right next to a real one. Nice car.

Lotto car tho.

Got the reality check I needed last night by way of a sizable bounced check someone wrote me last week. I received the bank's notification email at 9:45PM of "NSF" ...which put me to scrambling to be sure I don't have any outstanding checks that will be affected, which put me to looking at my cash flow that is pretty much nip and tuck.

I must be out of mind to think I can fund this. Not in 2017 anyway. Oh well. Half the fun of these projects is thinking about them. I'm sure I'd build it, drive it a couple thousand miles at most, then sell it. They are cramped, hot, loud, and glorious, but you can only drool over it in the garage but so long, especially when it displaces the spot for my truck in there.

The voice of reason... so soon?
It's not like I asked my tenant to write me a bad check for a grand. lol

Also, I was sitting up late last night thinking about the Fox body Mustang I had recently and how it looked just like a car, only smaller, with it's 100" wheelbase. Those Shelbys, including the 427, 289, and the coupe, are all 90" wheelbase. They really are tiny. And I am not. I fit in them, but getting in and out is like, well...

@Wahoo95

I had not seen this at the FF website till just now, regarding the new Gen 3 frame and body.

"Changes from the Gen 1 and 2 Coupe in interior space is dramatic. By leaving the 4″ round tube chassis, we were able to drop the floor/seat height by a whopping 2-1/2″. We added another 1/2″ in head room by increasing the radius of the roof line. Even better, the door opening has been increased by a huge 3-1/2″ making getting in and out so much easier. Once inside, the increased cockpit height and 1-1/2″ of more leg room length make this car so much bigger inside and truly big and tall capable."

I can't talk you out of it @fieldgrade It looks cools as all git out. However, if I were going to spend some money on building a "fast not necessarily cool looking" car, I'd do something like Jay Leno would do. I'd take a regular car and make it a sleeper. Something like you see in this video right here.:D

Saw that on IG the other day - little VW was getting it!

I'd take a regular car and make it a sleeper. Something like you see in this video right here.

'70 to '73 Pinto sedan with a German 2.6 V6 out of a Gen. 1 Capri. Ford 8" rear end out of a Mustang II. Not as much weight up front as a 302 and it'll wind forever!

See guys, I have a different philosophy. Not interested in a sleeper. Having 40 years of sales related experience, I'm from the school of thought that says an ounce of image is worth a pound of performance. :p

A frightening thing happened over dinner tonight. I might have actually gotten permission from the missus to build this thing... as long as she can keep her spot in the garage.

Now it's up to y'all to convince me otherwise. The lead time to get a kit probably takes forever. I'll call Whitby in Greensboro who builds them and see what they have to say.

I'll be the voice of reason.

JUST ORDER IT ALREADY BEFORE SHE CHANGES HER MIND

You are asking US to STOP you from building one of these?
Good luck with that ever happening.
We will sit here and live vacuously thru you effort cheering you on.
And fully expect a ride at the end. :D

no resistance here. order quick.
