Nice catch: both brackets and parenthesis are considered correct usages, however it does seem that use of brackets is the more nominal current use.

Because I'm a language geek, I was curious whether brackets use is a later or more modern - type setting font - form compared with parentheses, but didn't find anything after a cursory search.

Take a look at the site rules, then look at the posting. And very likely the message you probably got about it, too, explaining why it was deleted.

If it was a simple violation of the rules...accept it as a lesson learned and carry on smartly.

These things happen, no need to get bend out of shape over it.
