which will hopefully end soon, the lock down, that is.

We moved one of my kids out this past weekend (again), and sent a bed with him that I bought thirty years ago. It’s amazing how comfortable you can make a bed with a memory foam topper.

Anyway, I need to buy another mattress/box spring. The last 3 or 4 came from Original Mattress factory, but even those got uncomfortable without putting a 2” memory foam topper on them years later.

We have a Mattress Warehouse in town, and Mattress Firm is bound to be around here some where. Both have closed their showrooms in the lock down.

What’s my biggest bang for the buck in a comfortable bed? I don’t think the wife will let me buy one if we can’t lie down on it somewhere first.

Thanks Phil. I will look into that.

Totally random observation. We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn at Kitty Hawk, OBX about 12 years ago when it was new, and that bed was FAR and AWAY the most comfortable bed I ever slept on. Hands down. Wife concurred.

We asked at the front desk when we checked out, and they told us they sold them at the Hilton website. Never bought one at the time, and now it appears they sell some variety of them at Wayfair on line, but there are different models, so who knows.

I remember seeing a leaflet in a hotel room I stayed at once that said something like, “was this the best sleep you’ve ever had? Now you can buy the xyz blah blah blah mattress from (fancy, company dime) resort!” I was surprised but apparently it’s pretty common at nicer hotels/resorts.

Best bang for the buck? I love my purple! I struggled to swallow the $4k+ price tag for a mattress I’d be happy with, so I took a chance on Purple 4yr ago, shortly after they launched, relying on their 100 night guarantee, and we still love it. It was 1/3 the cost of what I was finding in stores.
Purple is now sold at one of the major mattress stores, I forget which one. Target has one of Purple’s competitors. And there are a dozen D2C mattress options out there, some slightly different, some can even be customized for you.
My best friend bought the mid-grade Purple (only had 1 grade when I bought mine, now their base model) and about 8mo later no complaints.

Check Zinus mattresses on Amazon. I bought one to try 6 years ago and ended up buying 3 more for my kids and a couple more for the house in the mountains. A good reminder I need to buy a couple more for the mountains. I don’t think you can beat the price anywhere and I love ours. Have recommended them to several friends and everyone loves them.

Just checked Amazon. They sell a ton of these!

I can tell you what not to buy. A Serta from Sam’s Club. Just like any big box store, products are made of less quality with a big name but do not last. There are many grades of foam. I once worked in a foam plant and made the stuff. I also assembled the actual mattresses once. Horrible job and $2.85 per hour back in the day.

I have a Tempurpedic that raises up and all that. Kind of pricey but I cant complain about it at all. Relatives have the sleep number bed and they like it as well

I have a Sleep Number, not awful, not amazing.
The after sale CS and delivery was enough I will never buy another and would have told them to keep the thing had my wife not been so set on it, I was very near returning it when they called about my responses to their survey.

Can't beat a good memory foam & the prices have come down quite a bit. We paid ~$1800 for a king size 10 years ago. First night we slept on it was the first night in over 10 years that I awoke without back pain.

After 10 years though, it's showing its age & it's time to replace it. We'll definitely going with the same type again. Makes me wince to part with the $$$, but the value of a good mattress can not be overstated.

We got two sets for our daughters at https://sleephappens.com/collections/mattresses
online has free delivery, made in NC, my oldest got a new set for her apartment online. We kept her two year set for the guest room. We still have our Sealy Posturepedic queen set from 1989 when we got married.

Tuft and Needle... We bought one a couple of months ago. They have a store in Crabtree, probably others. Stupid comfy... 10yr warranty.

Not cheap, but you get what you pay for...
I second the Tuft and Needle. I reccomend them to everyone. We've had one for 2 years now and love it. They have the best warranty, and if you decide that you don't like it during the first 100 days then they refund it and help you find somewhere to donate the mattress.

Indigo Sleep

Made in Mt. Airy, NC.

This replaced a Saatva mattress, and is the best sleep we've ever had. We used the Saatva box spring with a bunkie board on it instead of replacing our bed frame with a platform.

The Indigo mattresses offer several different firmness choices, and there is some adjustability in the firmness, based on which side of the pad you are sleeping on; and you can replace the components individually if necessary, instead of having to replace the whole mattress (all explained on the website). A king cost us $600.00 at the time we bought it.

It looks like they have more variety than they did a year ago, and some of them are now made in Tennessee.

We were planning on replacing our old mattress after we got here. With everything on lockdown, we have been unable to do so. I was reading all of the reviews of the Zinus and I just ordered one. I'll update after it gets here on May 1.

I just bought one of these a few months ago. So far everyone who has slept on it has agreed it is awesome. We bought a metal frame from amazon too that is really high. I have been stacking totes under it for more storage. No boxspring needed. It comes in a big box rolled up. You unroll it and let it sit for a day or two and it expands. First bed from Amazon but i have to say its pretty nice and the price was right.

Tuft and Needle. King size delivered to my door for around 700$ via amazon. Love it. So does the girl.
My picky mom tried one and she loves hers too. Will never spend more again.

HaHa, all of my kids and my wife! It is in the back bedroom and so far my daughter and her husband, all three sons and wife have slept on it. My wife says i snore which is total BS. I have never heard myself snore at all. :D
Do you use a platform or box spring with it? Wife has a headboard she wants to use so I’ll need to order a bedframe, and a platform or boxspring. Which I found.

WOW Thanks guys. I am in the market for a new mattress and you guys have helped, BUT-- I have a question---- How do you keep the mattress from sliding toward the foot of the bed without a foot board? I am think one of those stick mats you put under a rug to keep it in place?

I’m tall and haven’t slept with a footboard in fifty years. Mattress doesn’t go anywhere, if I am understanding you.

We bought a steel bedframe and you don't need a boxspring. It has no headboard/baseboard but i bought a kit that allows you to attach one. We haven't bought one yet so its basically right now a huge elevated platform with a 12 inch thick mattress. Ill get the model of metal frame and post it below.

Frame

Headboard attachments.

to me the frame seems a little light weight although it is supposed to support a lot of weight. My Plan is to put a piece of plywood running the length of the bed on both sides and add some 4X4 posts for additional support. They would be completely hidden. It is basically two metal frames that you fit together. What i like is it is very tall. And totes full of stuff fit underneath it. Right now the space is full of totes with food in it :)

Another vote for Tuft and Needle. We don't have a box spring, use a steel platform bed we got from Wayfair. Had it almost a year, so far no complaints. Their pillows are excellent too.

Also spent a week in a Zinus at a VRBO and was very happy with it, planning to buy one once the guest room is empty of boxes from our recent move.

We are using regular box springs with all of ours. The two I bought for the mountains were on twin beds with bunky board supports. I don’t think most of them need anything other than a flat surface to lay on.

Okay, you Tuft and Needle guys.
Tuf guys for short.
Which mattress did you like?
I see three choices on line.
Door #1, #2, or 3#

We have the Mint. Being hot sleepers we went for the cool option, but I really think any of them are great. we layed around the store in all three for hours. Hard to tell a difference...

I've got the original mattress. It isn't bad and doesn't get too hot, but if it was out at the time I probably would have done the mint as I do get hot when I sleep. They don't lie when they say it is somehow firm and soft at the same time. We bought their brand mattress cover as well.

If it is not a heavy use mattress Big Lots is good place to go locally. We buy mattress for our guestrooms from Big Lots. They only get used a few times a year and are perfectly comfortable. The sell a fair amount of of major brands at decent prices.

Boys, I have actually convinced the spousal unit to let me order this thing without her actually trying it. I appreciate all the help.

I’m getting the Tuft and Needle Original mattress, plus the 2” foam topper which will make this thing 2” taller to work with the mammoth headboard she had made from her mom's old headboard. Plus that will make it softer, which we like, rather than spend the $400 extra for the Mint upgrade mattress which also seems to be just 2 more inches of foam (and some other features I’m sure, but this is just a guest bed).

Alternately, I could wait till someone pitches one out on the side of hiway 55 somewhere between Fuquay and Erwin and save some dough. :D

Agreed. We got a nice Serta twin box spring and mattress from there about 4 years ago for $220. We've had multiple guests sleep on it and they have all mentioned it was really comfortable. We looked at Big Lots again before we decided on Tuft and Needle.

I wouldn't buy one for my bed or an everynight sleeper but for guest rooms they are a great value. The way I understand it they save money by making a one way mattress. You can't flip them so they do not last as long.

Must have changed since we bought then. The mattress we got was able to be flipped, but it was extremely lightweight as well so you are probably right on it not being an every night sleeper. It might work for a kid though.
