Video-Drunk driver on Hwy 601 into Concord

Thanks, I did not know that.

It's about worthless unless there happens to be someone sitting on top of you.

I've called it at least 50 times and the communicators are absolutely the worst. Instead of keeping you on the line they say ok by, really very sad.
Two weeks ago I called about an RV than was was going about 90mph and tailgaiting nearly ran me off the road. I called *hp and it sent me to an administration office in Raleigh.

I applaud the guy who video'd this...I'm sure it was welcome evidence for the police. Too bad he evidently had no phone reception in the area. Not that this would have likely made a difference anyway, given that it would have take a bit of time to get an officer into position.

I'll relate this experience of my own, though, with respect to following a drunk. Buddy of mine, way back in my younger days, had too much to drink and I could NOT get the keys away from him or otherwise prevent him from getting into and driving away (trust me...it just wasn't happening, though I'm sure plenty of people will toss in their two cents on how I could have done whatever). This was well before the advent of cell phones (early 80s).

So I decided to follow him to make sure he got home OK. Whatever the heck THAT meant in my completely sober, but addled, brain.

Anyway, he decided to make a high speed run to keep from being followed. Like a dumbass, I bit and gave chase. I shoulda just let him go, because all it did was egg him on.

In the end, nobody got hurt and he made it him safely. But I'm d*mn sure not proud of what I allowed myself to fall into. We were lucky nobody got hurt or killed, plain and simple. I had a long brainstorm afterwards figuring out how I could have handled things differently.

Drunk drivers are, quite obviously, dangerous. Just be careful that what we do doesn't inspire them to be even more so. It just might actually be safer to let a drunk driver go if they notice you and decide to go totally batsh*t insane.

Thank God for cell phones and such, which go a long ways towards helping get these people off the road as soon as possible.

Troopers may have as few as two working the whole county and aren't likely to be within 20 minutes of you. They are directed from a dispatch centers, one in Newton, NC, one in salisbury and I'm not sure about the eastern region which has it's own time restraints. If you need service quick forget *HP and call 911.

I ran a wreck just like that. White Taurus hut the culvert pipe went airborne and cut a light pole in half and finally stopped on a maple tree. I helped cut the car open and found an open 40oz plus more. we loaded the patient in the helicopter and i got the trooper told him i smelt alcohol on the patient and pointed out the beers in the car.

In all seriousness...do you never drive on the interstate?

There are signs all over the place. You'll probably see a ton of them now that it's been brought up.

ive never noticed the signs - im busy watching out for drunks and soccer moms reading books driving down the road. (yes that lady was on 77 the other day)

Thats a fine example of hammered driving. Ask me how i know. That wasnt 3 beers. That was a case or a fifth.
That's crazy to me. I've never been that far gone, and if I was, I was on the floor asleep.

edit:

You know, I'm thinking about this now.

I drank close to a fifth of whiskey one night. ONE night. - Let's say a fifth minus 10%. I suppose if I drove then I would be totally f'ed. like that guy. I can see that.

I drink a fair bit, but I have never been to that point but once. Wasn't proud of it. I remember pissing off my wife pretty bad that night. She still let me get some. But she wasn't happy.

If you think about right before you passed out you know when you grabed your best friends wifes ass showed her your penis and let the dog lick it. Thats were he was. Except he chose to drive instead of all that.

Troopers report that no alcohol was involved it was illegal substances.
boom!

that's some good pills.

idk, either way to that schmendrick...

Yep. I followed a drunk driver up 321 from Gastonia once. He finally got off north of Lincolnton in Catawba County. Multiple calls to *HP during that time period to give them updates. I'm not sure they ever dispatched a trooper - the person I talked to couldn't decide if they should call Highway Patrol or the sheriff's office of whichever of the three counties I was in at the time.

I was in a similar situation about 2.5 years ago before I moved down here.

Was about 11pm, only he and I on the road. Was driving down a 3 lane highway and he was going shoulder to shoulder. Called the police, they say can you read the license plate I told them there was no way I was getting close enough to read the plate but described the vehicle, and my vehicle with the flashers on. I stayed on the phone and gave them a play by play of what exits we were passing. Fast forward about 5-10 minutes the cops blows past us, I told the dispatcher and I could see the cop pull over. Gentleman driving must have seen the same because he coeherent enough to pull off the next exit.

He ends up pulling into a gas station and parks in attempt to sleep it off I guess? (still on the phone with dispatch, she tells me now it's not state police she'll have to dispatch local) fast forward 20 minutes the guy gets out of the car (looking for his keys) he finds them goes to leave gas station I drove up to the car got out and went up to his window. He was completely wasted long story short I got the guy to park and I called his wife and informed her he was trashed and she needs to come get him he's in no condition to drive. Then I left.

I guess I thought the police would have done better, that shit is no joke.

I have honestly never noticed those, or maybe I have but have forgotten. Either way I was thinking *HP was some sort of PIT maneuver, which really changes the tone of the post I quoted.

I mean make it totally illegal.

or conversely, set a blood limit for other drugs (like other states have) and decriminalize possession.

I can tell you from loads of experience between 20-25 that as stoned as a college kid can get, I have NEVER seen one drive that way. In fact, I usually paid more attention to what I was doing.
I almost ran a red light, once. Besides when you're just traveling between fast food places, how far and fast can you get? :D

Sure would be interesting to know what substances it was?

Seen people do all kinds of stuff like this on alcohol, but I am trying to imagine what other drugs would do this? Maybe a heroin addict nodding off? Seen some spacey people on pills, but not like this.

I need to find out what this is and get some. I keed I keed.

Yeah, maybe he was jacked up on that damn pot?

Hahahahahahaha! Good Lord.

Do you mean raw milk, or pop tarts shaped like firearms?

You quoted me twice with the same stupid response. Is there a purpose for that?

I was passed on the Hwy 17 bridge just south of Little Washington last year. Guy hit the left side of the bridge, came all the way across to hit the right side, then exited onto Hwy 33 toward Aurora. I called 911, gave them location updates, described how the guy hit the bridge 2x, ran thru two ditches, then told them they could find him in the front yard at address xx after he did a 180 in front of oncoming traffic. Never saw a single LE vehicle, or knew what happened.

Here's the official WSOC news story. Of course they're completely wrong about the location it was nowhere near Union county line lol. Does Union and Cabarrus even share a line?

Here's dude's court date if you feel like attending I'm sure they'll bring out what substances he may have been on

BTW guy is from Marshville. He was a far piece from home. He may not have faired any better driving down Hwy 205 neither.

I don't drink but have an issue with people getting DUI's when they opt to sleep it off in their cars. Or public drunkeness for deciding to walk home. That, I think, is insane.

I was pulled out of a car that was stopped at a DUI checkpoint. Driver was underage, but sober. Passenger was drunk AF, and I was passed out in the back after someone loaded my drunk ass into the car.
Driver's parents were called to pick them up at the po-leese station, Passenger was booked for DUI(!?), and I was charged with possession of a malt beverage under 21 (between 20-21). So much for getting a DD.
Oh, all charges were dropped. Mine were dropped that night since they had to wake me up I guess.
