Weighted Tags

I got pulled and weighed in my last truck towing a Acura Integra on a open trailer. I was told I was over weight by 500 lbs and that they were going to let me go but that I needed to watch my weight going forward. I had been towing all over the Eastern US towing my race car along with all the stuff needed to support it and my wife and I for over 20 years and never gave it a thought.

My new truck has weighted tags for 16K as my enclosed trailer loaded weighs in the 8500-9000 pound range. I pnly tow this way several times per year but the price of the tag is CHEAP insurance.

For private, like has been said, I wouldn't bother with weighted tags. I have a 02 F150 that needs 20’s from Coltdefender! (hasn't blown up yet, lol), and pull a 21 foot, 4000 pound camper at least 5-6 times a year, and run standard tags. Never been a problem.

With a diesel they print a nasty note on your registration this tag is not sufficient for this vehicle

So DMV will issue you a tag that isn't legal for your vehicle? And the only consequence is a nastygram on your registration?

They will hand you license plates that aren't legal, and you're the one who will be punished for it at some time later, if anyone else notices and cares.

Yep and the consequence is probably a ticket if the man pulls you over and sees it on the registration or cares. In my case I moved a tag from a vehicle I sold Jeep at the time to a 2500 pickup just purchased since it was mid year of my renewal and they never mentioned it at dmv just noticed it on the registration when I got it.

I swapped my tags from a 92 ranger to my dodge 1500. On the ranger 5,000lbs covered it and just about anything it would pull, with my dodge the truck weighs more than 5,000lbs. Hasn’t been a problem, and even if it was I’m not going to pay for weighted tags for it.

I've come to learn DMV dont know squat about weights/tags. I transferred tags from a standard crew cab to a Dodge megacab. The original tags on the crew were 6K lbs. I asked about it when switching trucks and was told the 6K rating was fine. I've come to find the megacab itself is quite a bit over that 6K mark unloaded and my registration has no such warning on it. Almost due for renewal at which time I will raise the weight considerably just to be safe. Chances of getting caught may be slim but if involved in a wreck, especially if loaded or towing trailer or camper I might find myself with a problem.

Truck's a gasser, but a 3/4 ton, shipping weight was something like 6150, sits empty at 63something, rated at 9900. I get the warning with my registration. I actually argued with the knucklehead at the license plate office for weighted he was interested and I really didn't care, so unweighted it is. No issues, guess the CMV Troopers round here have better things to do.

At work with gov't perm tags they often argue the other way, refusing to issue until we guess what weight they want us to 'buy'. Damned rediculous for a Tacoma used by a meter reader.

I recently bought a 06 Ram 2500 Powerwagon (Hemi) to pull a 30 ft toy hauler. Truck weighs 6600, trailer is 8400 dry. I tagged truck for 16k. I do know of a buddy of mine that got weighed in SC on the way to Myrtle. He was pulling a 45 ft 5th wheel and was underweight. I guess its a trade off. Pay up front or risk a ticket.
