What did you do on the Rifle Range today?

All steel and no paper? I'm a member at Colemans Creek and it's steel only past 100 yards. I wish there was an area for paper targets to see how your rifle groups at longer ranges.
At Woodys they have steel and you can go down and paint it. They do ask that you take the time to paint them all for as long as it takes to go down range. Not sure if they have a rule against paper.
For the record, my 1k pics above were NOT at Woodys.

Mowed to the 300 yard line and then hit a wet spot with the ATV and that was as far as I got. I guess it's time to pull out the herbicide. I have three hundred yards of muck and then it's good to 900.

Looks like a wet mess. Hopefully it'll dry out soon and we can get to the 600yd range and get it opened up for our matches.

Now to start shooting into the wind.
It's a challenge!! Last time I was at Colemans Creek it was realllyyyy windy. Almost a perfect crosswind of 7-8 mph and then it would pick up to about 12-13 mph. I was shooting a 6.5 CM with 140 SMK's at 1150 yards........... When I missed the wind call I was off by about 3 feet.

Then I cheated with a 338 Lapua Mag...... wind didn't bother it as much!

The evil crowd that I shoot with shoot for score. Hits on targets no matter what the range mean nothing to them. If it's not in the x ring they just politely grit their teeth and grin like you would to a child misbehaving in a restaurant. Because they know they got you beat. Bastards! :D

I went up to Frontline today. Because of the weather forecast (I guess), it was almost completely empty. I did a bunch of playing around with a field grade Garand on the 500 yard deck. I hit all the plates from 200-500 first shot using 1953 surplus Remington ammo from RTI. Then I took my Bergara B14 BMP to the 1000 yard known distance range as a thunderstorm was rolling in. I dialed up 35 MOA, held 2 MOA left based on my wind call and took 1 cold bore shot that was an impact near center of the plate at 1000 yards. About the time the Magneto-speed hit indicator light on top of the plate stopped flashing, a big bolt of lightning hit about 1/4 of a mile away, and I decided that a cold bore 1000 yard impact was good enough for me and I rolled back up to the building to wait it out before heading back to the 500 to play with the Garand some more. It ended up being a perfect range day because it was cool, overcast, perfect shooting conditions other than a little wind and I pretty much had the entire range to myself.

Took a young man out to the range who was interested in shooting beyond 200 yards. He was shooting a thin barreled .308 with a Vortex scope and a 5 pound trigger. He had a box of 168 SMK factory. We rigged up the magnetospeed and recorded some velocities, used one of the phone apps and he was hitting 1/2 IPSC steel targets out to 600 yards in no time. He is already thinking of upgrading to a better rifle with a chassis and better optics. LOL! Yes, I am an evil man. 💩

Spent an hour at Woody's today on the steel range. Over the past couple of years my taste has shifted from .30 shooting to 5.56 shooting and I have to say the AR15A4 is a lot easier and more fun to shoot than the M1A. Still and all I enjoyed both rifles today.

Woodys this morning on the 550 range. The Colt carbine did great work with my 68gr Hornady BTHP loads out to 300 yds but factory 55 gr FMJ were pretty hopeless.
This was the first time I used the Chinese SKS past 100 yds. 20 rounds of Wolf HP scared the targets but I got 15 out of 20 FMJ Wolf on the 200 yd plates. No idea why the FMJ shot better. I can barely make out the plates with the iron sights.

A fun hour and with a nice breeze the temp was pleasant.

Did some testing at 300 yards this morning. Ten rounds prone. I did well on the first four rounds cutting the X ring (1 inch) and then I went to crap. I just couldn't get comfortable. Not bad for a Savage rifle in .308 I guess. Always fun.

Hate I wasn’t able to make it today, Tom. Appreciate the invite as always. Did anyone show up?

One of the guys had a Franchi 6.5 CM that was amazing with factory ammo. I didn't even know Franchi made rifles?

Went to sight in a new scope on a rifle I’m trading. Old Rem 742 30-06. Thought I had this thing sorted but after a few rounds it went right back to sticking cases in the chamber and ripping the lip off the case as it tried to extract them. 🤬🤬F7AF8A91-67CE-4A70-810F-8EA4836D3D90.jpeg

I put a 1.5-4x scope on a target 7.62mm Lee Enfield and sighted it in for 300 yds. Proceeded to smack the 200 and 300 yd plates with regularity. I then shot my scoped Long Branch #4 .303 and after missing with S&B ball switched to surplus FN ball and did quite well at 300 yds. I wanted to go after the 400 yd plates but I was on the wrong bench to contort myself around to get lined up. Maybe next time.

Played around with my Savage .308 with 168 SMK's at 600 yards. I plugged in my onsite dope in STRELOK PRO and it put me 2 moa high on steel. So I messed around a bit until I though I was hitting center and then switched to paper. Mirage was really bad and then the wind picked up. First time I used the mirage to estimate wind. First couple of shots were a bit low and adjusted for that and then got hits in the 10 ring. I try to shoot for score (best dope?) at each session so I have a relative idea of whether I'm getting better or still suck. :D I taped a twelve inch reactive paper target on the back of this target that I centered on the "X". That way I could see see my hits at 600. I figured that if I totally missed the reactive target I might be able to see the holes on the white paper. No way I can see them in the black.

I'm wondering whether to go with a heavier bullet but I have hundreds of 168's so I hate to switch? Numbered hits have nothing to do with the shot string. Just started entering them in Ballistic-X

Are those handloads?

Yes. At 100 they group in the .3's. A 600 not so much. Maybe I could do better on a cloudy calm day. The target was really doing the mirage dance yesterday morning. But that is half the fun.

The vertical spread is discouraging to me as being the right load, but then again it is a 308 🤷‍♂️

Nice! Getting ready for the match I see. Is that on that Savage? Load details?

Working on it. Still need to build some target stands and do some mowing.
I'm using 42 grains of R15 with LC brass and F210's. 2.21 CBTO. 2610 f/s
This is the target on the back that I was shooting. I could make out the hits more or less with the mirage. PXL_20231119_144052147.jpg

How many rounds are required for this match? I don’t have maybe 50 brass left and I’m not going to form anymore until I get this new barrel chambered.

If everyone shows up we are presently full. Twenty rounds plus sighters is our standard belly shoot followed by a PRS style match (2 or 3 stages) that someone else organizes but I would say about the same. Then we may just plink for awhile. At 600 I think we can put four shooters on the line. Still working on that. At 300 yards we can do six at a time. This time we are going to 600 yards. Haven't figured out all of the in's and out's. Most likely we will have steel for sighters. Everyone needs to have their rifles sighted in and be able to dial out to 600 and then tweak if need be.

If it stays dry for the next few weeks we may not need to wear hip boots to change the targets.:D

Went to the range today to sight in the new Athlon scope on my 308 Savage model 10.
Used Federal 168 grain Gold Medal Match factory loads and was pleased with the results. The black stickers were from bore sighting, and the other three were my final group at 100 yards.

Gonna use the brass and work up some rounds for the match later this month with @Downeast. Hope I can match the accuracy of this factory load, or at least come close. This is by far the most accurate rifle I’ve ever owned.

41.7 - 42 gr IMR4064 in LC brass got me in the same zone as the FGMM. 42.8-43.2 in Winchester brass. Both Sierra and Hornady 168s

Last Thursday I got my LVPO 1x8 Busnell AR scope mounted on my backup (possible primary) AR. Broke in a new upper. 25 rounds, cleaning between each round. Fired a few more rounds at 75 yard at rocks on the bank for giggles after that. With no spotting scope to check hits, it took me over 1.5 hours to do. I was tired and running out of daylight, so I'm hoping to be able to check it at 100, 200, and 300 Friday. If so, I may try to use it the 3 gun match Saturday. It's got a better trigger than my primary rifle. I won't have time this week to switch triggers and not sure I want to yet.

I’ve got Varget(which I paid too much for) and CFE 223 to load 308. 175 grain Sierra Match Kings are what I’m working with. Also have CCI 200 and 250 primers. Federal brass from the factory match ammo.
