Try a bunch of brands and see which one patterns best in your gun, and send it.
Pretty much. My preference is keeping all pellets in an IPSC target at 25 yards. That should hopefully minimize chances of hitting something I don't want to hit. But YMMV.Yep.
It's going to be bad enough that you have to murderized someone, but having to repair drywall and reframe diplomas is going to add insult to injury.
The brand/type for shotgun has been the least thought I have given to any defense ammunition. Anything 00 that cycles. Flight controlled and all that is cool, but any shot Ill likely be making in my home is going to be less than 10-15 yards. So pretty much all of them will be a pattern smaller than a pie plate.
“Sir, not only did they blast half of your body away, he used the cheapest shells possible…you should feel even worse…”I’ve thought about switching to Estate 00…not that I dislike Federal or it doesn’t pattern tight, but it may pattern “too” tight. The Estate does well at my in-home distances, but does spread a bit more than the FC.
Either way, the EMS crew that responds is getting a bad hand dealt to them.

That will set a field on fire........................do Not ask me how I know!!!............Ima bet the living room would need re-decorating!!!
What's the thinking behind the staggered loads? We're talking about shooting bad guys coming in the house presumably to do harm to the people that live there. Peppering his face with birdshot to be followed up with a load or two of 00 buck just seems like you're wasting time torturing the fella(s) before letting him/them know you're actually serious about defending and they're leaving in bags. And given the litigious society we live in, hitting the intruder with birdshot and not killing him seems like a recipe for civil court troubles akin to the people who get sued because the burgular had a slip and fall while stealing grandma's pearls. I remember reading about a housekeeper that stole fireworks from her employer's house, then sued him when her child blew his finger off. Anyway, seems like if we're shooting to stop then we should be loading in a way to make the stop likely on the first discharge.
Haha…. For home defense, this could cause an issue and more so if you have a dry Christmas tree 🎄 in the den! 🤪
I actually load my old Mossberg 500 1st 2 shells are bird shot, 2nd 2 are 00 buck, and the last 2 are slugs. The bird shot at point blank range would be pretty bad and shouldn't penetrate more than a layer of drywall, 00 buck is for if they don't get the point and the slugs are for through the wall for good measure. What's the thinking behind the staggered loads? Play this out a little further...that first discharge may have the effect of stunning the shooter with flash and bang. Do you really want to risk it not being the shot that stops an attack if it's the only one you have with all your senses working?
Ok… I’m that guy.. so why do I mix loads 4 bird / 4 00?? I do this as it works for the layout of my home and the fact that I want to lessen to potential of shooting through a wall and harming killing a family member or visitors. I’m sure we are all quite good at shooting shots on target at the range or long shots in the field / woods…. But I feel lot of folks have set a perfect scenario in their mind that includes perfect shots down a long hallway or catching the miscreant at the door. The reality is you need to prepare for potential ill-timed and odd shots that may occur form a struggle and that is why “I” choose to load my defense weapon the way I do, based onWhat's the thinking behind the staggered loads? I like this, a tube full of mall Nina shells.
I appreciate the thought going into your conclusions, but isn't this what a side saddle could accomplish? Keep shotgun "cruiser ready" with buckshot in the tube. Keep smaller shot and slugs on the side saddle. Now you have a choice on what to stick in the chamber for the first shot.I actually load my old Mossberg 500 1st 2 shells are bird shot, 2nd 2 are 00 buck, and the last 2 are slugs. Guess you could get one of these! I've daydreamed of it.I appreciate the thought going into your conclusions, but isn't this what a side saddle could accomplish? This gun with the old style Laserlyte Center Mass laser (9 lasers that spread out, as distance increases, to simulate the spread of 00), would be awesome!Guess you could get one of these! I've daydreamed of it.View attachment 565160
