Where my runners at?

Does anyone here know much about running shoes?
I did my first 5-miler in a while on monday, so my calves and feet were both in a bit of pain.
I think my 2016 New Balances have had enough and are dead. I have never ran in any of the "super shoes" they have now, so I think I'm going to test the Asics Superblasts, and get a lower heel drop, lighter, low stack shoe to compare to my old Zante's, are there any recommendations there?
I agree with Chuckman on figuring out what you need, I had to move up to a higher drop myself as I was fighting a lot of calf issues. Moving from .8 to 1 cm seems to have basically solved it.

Have you had your foot type checked out at a running store to make sure you are in the right shoe? If not, find one. If so, stick with what they recommend. Me, I have a flat foot, I am a heavy guy, and I pronate; a Clydesdale. I need motion control with some cushion. I don't do well with low drop/zero drop. I like Brooks Addiction and Beast shoes, and Hokas (can't recall which model).
I got mine checked by a fleet feet near me when I was about 35lbs heavier 8ish months ago. The shoe they put me in I did not like (on cloud cloudrunner) after several 2-3 mile runs and went back to what I was recommended for with my original half marathon (the NB Zante's several years ago). I'm still heavier than I was then, and my feet are now a little wider (I was 99th percentile on narrowness), but I still have high, strong arches and don't recall them mentioning that I need any stability help. I may get another check and see how much the weight loss and mileage each week has changed my needs

I'm a huge Hoka fan. Prior to them I used Brooks. The Hokas are light years ahead of Brooks.
I've heard great reviews of them and a college friend almost exclusively runs in them. Is the midsole pretty soft or more on the firm side?

They are Marshmellow soft.
Worth a try, usually the really soft doesn't work for me but my body has changed a lot.
They are great shoes but very pricey. Definitely want to make sure you get the right one for your foot.
I think a trip to the shoe store is in order. hopefully I get a better fit than the On clouds, at least they make great walking shoes.

I'm trying to slowly increase distance and managed to top June. I missed a day or two because of vacations and life but still got it done.

My pace is still horrendous.

Don't worry about your pace. You are lapping everyone on the couch, and you are your only competition. Well done.

For anyone interested. I ended up with 2 pair.
Asics Superblast for long/easy/recovery runs
NB Fuelcell Rebel v3 for more tempo/shorter efforts.
I like both a lot and would recommend, the NB wouldn't be good for those with wide or flat feet. I believe even their wides in that model run narrow.

On the other hand, do any of you guys carry when you run? I've been running through a pretty sketchy area with a friend, I think his dog is most of the deterrent for now, but I'll be extending runs and running the area without him soon I expect. I was thinking a belly band and an LCP or J-frame (340 or 360PD). I also thought about picking up a hellcat on the next sale. I already have an LCP, but I wonder if the hellcat or J-frame would be worth the additional weight/cost, I don't shoot the LCP well but certainly would be able to hit inside 5 yards. My experience w/ j-frames has been with .357 ammo and I was about as accurate as with the LCP, and shot about the same speed. Am I missing any other options?

I carried a j frame in a belly band through the winter but it really sucks in the summer and I haven't been carrying anything.

I've looked at the Hill People kitbags but they aren't blowing my skirt up and they are stupid expensive for a fanny pack with shoulder straps.

I may look for a simple fanny pack.

The sling bag/fanny pack isn't something I've thought of. I may throw an LCP in one and see if it gets hot or uncomfortable.
Maybe they make one that looks like one of the runners fanny packs that have the little water bottles?

Have you seen the kitbags? I'm not sure they are for me, but you may like them.

I've been running roads and treadmill for awhile because the horse flies are a nightmare on the trails lately. It's pretty nice out and I want to harden up for the next gun run so I'm giving the trails another chance in a few minutes. 🤞

It's been a beautiful week for running. I did 4 miles on the trails yesterday at a good for me pace. I may try to get my little one to do a half mile with me today.

Anyone else out there doing it?

Yes, the weather is perfect for running! But I'm nursing an overuse injury, so I've been doing a lot of walk/run miles. Managed 11 miles on the Tobacco Trail Sunday, and I'm planning to walk/run the RDC half marathon on the 29th.

I forgot my Garmin running watch today so I used Strava on my phone and just carried it. I ran a route I’m very familiar with and it seemed like I was racking up miles faster than usual.

It turns out that Strava and my phone thinks that the route was 4.08 miles but the Garmin thinks the same route a few days earlier was 3.81 miles.

Does anyone have any insight into what would cause this discrepancy? Do you think I need to run a route with three devices to see which one is off?

Do you carry the phone in your hand or in a pack? Which phone? Are you running on roads or on trails? I've been very frustrated with measurement errors over the years. Some errors are specific to the trail, some to the device, some to where you carry the device, some to the app, etc. 10% error isn't uncommon for me when running trails in the woods for example. Also, some software smooths the data, while others may try to map data to known routes. If you upload your data to Strava, etc. take a look and see if there are obvious errors. That might give a clue as to whether it's the device, environment, or software.

Well, I normally run with just the Garmin forerunner watch and no phone.

Today I ran with my phone in my hand only because I forgot my watch. I have no intention of running with the phone again, I’m just concerned that my watch might be off.

The phone is a Motorola Z3.

Looking at the map on Strava, it does not appear that it mapped it to the known route “heat map”. It does look as if it meanders some which would explain the increased distance.

Which model of Garmin watch are you using? I like the newer Garmin watches but have had trouble with older models, especially in areas where it takes minutes to sync at the start. Are you running on open roads or in woods/trails?

ps. good on you for getting out there! It's great to track distance, but honestly if you're doing this for fitness vs. trying to hit some PR it's just as good to track time per week instead of miles per week, IMO.

It’s a Forerunner 55. It is about a year old budget model. I run mostly on wooded trails.

Honestly, I’m kind of a data nerd and it brings me a little joy. Some days I like pushing distance, others pace. The watch helps me with that. Since I’m new to running, all manner of personal bests happen frequently and that’s fun.

I'm not familiar with the Z3, but if the data map looks good with the Garmin I'd trust the watch over the phone. Even so, I've seen up to -5% variation over a 3 mile run in woods with my Garmin 245 (it's always measuring short).

Funny note: when my watch measures short, I run extra to make up for the error. I've been working out with a group called F3, and they even have a term for this:

ORGASM LAP

Any sort of short run and/or gesticulation done to achieve an acceptable number on your GPS watch for purposes of Strava bragging (i.e. — actually running a 4.92 mile course, but adding 0.08 more post-fact to achieve an even 5 miles).

I use a fenix 6 to track my runs and walking. Today after my very short exercise it said I had ran .46 of a mile. I walked the same path to cool down and stretch and it put me at .6 on the walk. Checking the map in garmin connect and it looks like the run didn’t pick up until about half way through.

This used to happen to me in North East park.
Running with an iPhone in my hand or pocket it was 4.0 miles, running with just an Apple Watch if was 3.75 miles. Big PITA trying to reconcile that.

Ok, so running a new trail, in Manor TX.
It is exactly 8 miles. Previously I was able to run 10 minute miles, now I can barely do a 12, with mid to high 13’s much more likely. What the hell? Where did those two minutes go?

I think fitness takes the stairs up but the elevator down.

I read online months ago that strava does not do the smoothing/will have results that are jagged. I read the best remedy is to run your workout on another app and import it later. Although, all the garmin watches I have had tend to measure a little short of whatever other metric I use (google maps, apple watch ultra/series 6, android and iphone) I'm not sure what causes that. I do think the Garmin Fenix line with their dual gps/glonass is likely as accurate as anything you can wear. FWIW my apple watch ultra seems very accurate from tracing on google.

Allergies/air quality and associated airflow have slowed me down lately. My 4 mile maintenance runs are normally sub 9 but the last couple weeks I've been hovering around 10 and feeling like garbage.

On another note, I got my 11 mile long run done saturday sub 10 min pace and will be my last 10+ mile long run before my half Nov 12th.

Yes, I will say that the heat and humidity do make a difference.
It was 50-80% humidity and 90-100 degrees most days, and I was running/jogging/walking 18 minute miles. Then the temperature dropped to 70 degrees and it was dry, I ran 8 miles in 1:46, again not impressive at all but significantly better than 18 minute miles.

I'm planning to walk the RDC half marathon in Durham on Sunday. I've run it in the past, but I'm getting older and just can't run it this year. I did 11 miles on the ATT a couple of weeks ago, run/walk (mostly walk) averaging ~13 minutes/mile. Will anyone else be at RDC on Sunday?

I ended up doing a run/walk today and managed to finish under three hours. 13:27 average pace. I was going much slower for the first 10 miles and then mostly ran it in since I saw I could break three hours. There weren't many walkers at the back, but tbh it was much more enjoyable hanging out with the run/walk and fast walk crowd than being in the crowd of runners trying to run a 2:00-2:30 half or get a personal best.

I've been pushing my distance the past several weeks and I set a couple of goals for myself; a 5 mile run before the end of November and a 10k before Christmas.

I was feeling good tonight and the planets aligned and I just cleared my first 10k! 😎

Still slow, but at a pretty respectable pace for me. Woot!

Ran the OBX half marathon yesterday, managed to finish before 2 hours - 1:57. The weather was absolutely horrible and I felt like I had a 20 mph wind and rain in my face for half the race

Just started a C210K training regimen with my daughter this morning, though I’m thankfully not starting from the couch part. I have been working out 3-4 times a week for two years now. Have lost 70ish pounds in that time period. I had planned on dropping another 30 pounds or so before adding running to my workout, but she wants to do a 10K this spring for her birthday, so I’m hitting the training earlier than planned. Went better than I expected. We will see how sore I am later. Lol

Good part is this will help me drop those 30 pounds more quickly.
