So Tuesday April 6th 2021 is when my firebug tendency finally caught up with me.
I was about to fuel up my ol Coleman 220-K that I restored some years ago. I always use a funnel with a screen and when I got my little red one I noticed it had gunk in it from using it with an old can of kerosene earlier.
Instead of rinsing it out with something like simple green or blowing it out, i just decided to use white gas since I had a nearly empty can of it in my hand.
So....i pour a little in the funnel and run it out on the ground...approximately a foot from my still hot perforated vented burn barrel 55gal drum. [emoji91]
Yall know what came next? I set myself aflame for a few seconds. Only thing i could think of is stop drop and roll. I had to pull off the polyester T shirt while it was still burning.
Ran into the house and told the wife I need help. She thought I fell down in mud since I was dirty looking. I immediately jumped into the shower and threw on cold water and let it run into my face for a long while. Then I washed down the non-burned parts so I wouldn't have any lantern fluid on me going into the hospital. I didn't want a hospital scrubdown!
She wanted to call 911 but I knew my airway was fine and that our still-new address would just delay the trip by ambulance. She drove me to the nearest ER at elevated triple-digit speeds within 20 minutes. I held a cold compress and frozen bagged veggies to my face the entire trip. When I got there I was shaking and nearly in shock. A quick shot of morphine and a few follow-up Dilaudid shots help me to be in better spirits! I ended up being transferred to Wake Forest Baptist ER and the burn team evaluated me. They determined that I would heal up nicely as long as I stayed on top of it with good wound care.
Ended up burning around 12% of my body on the face chest and left arm. Partial thickness aka 2nd degree burns.
FWIW I have the absolute best ambulance driver and nurse in the world. She has medical training but kinda freaked out until I told her I would be okay.
Don't be stupid with fire y'all!
